Condom and other contraceptive use among a random sample of female adolescents: a snapshot in time.

This study examined the sexual practices of 235 females aged 15 to 19 years and their readiness to use specific contraceptive methods for birth control and sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention. The investigation was based on the stages-of-change construct from the Transtheoretical Model (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983, 1984). Results demonstrated that despite the availability of newer contraceptive methods (e.g., Depo-Provera), most sexually active adolescents were least resistant to using condoms and were further along in the stages of change for condom use as compared with other contr…

Determination of factors associated with condom use among women infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

To better understand potential barriers to condom use and the sexual behaviour of women infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), an anonymous self-administered survey was performed on a convenience sample of 83 predominantly single HIV+ women. Most women had only one sexual partner who usually knew of the subject's serostatus. Only a minority of partners (26%) were known to also be HIV infected. Subjects were surprisingly more likely to use condoms with their main partner as opposed to other partners. Factors found to be associated with condom non-use included younger age, low educati…

Factors associated with Hispanic women's HIV-related communication and condom use with male partners.

To determine factors influencing Hispanic women's HIV-related communication and condom use with their primary male partner, 189 Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Mexican women were interviewed regarding sexual behaviour and condom use, relationship characteristics, perceived risk for HIV, and HIV-related communication with the primary male partner. Level of HIV-related communication with the primary male partner was associated with the woman's perceived risk for HIV and her rating of the openness with which she could communicate with her primary partner. Mexican women were less likely than Puerto R

Evaluation of a targeted AIDS prevention intervention to increase condom use among prostitutes in Ghana.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short- and long-term impact of a 6-month pilot intervention program on condom use among prostitutes in Accra, Ghana … se among prostitutes never enrolled. Sixty-four per cent of those followed-up reported always using condoms with clients in 1991. These 'always users' were more likely to have maintained informal contact with project staff, know that HIV can be transmitted by healthy clients, and report that clients frequently initiate condom use. CONCLUSIONS: Findings s …

Condom use rates for specific sexual behaviors among opioid abusers entering treatment.

A structured interview was used to determine the details of high risk sexual behaviors, including number of sexual partners, frequency of condom use, and involvement in commercial sexual activity in 165 opioid abusers (mean age 34 years, 36% minority, 47% female) entering out-patient methadone substitution therapy. The median number of sexual partners in the sample was one, and 95% were sexually active in the past year. Most patients (84%) denied any commercial sexual activity and reported rates of monogamy and sexual abstinence (81%), and rates of condom use (15%), that were comparable with r

Psychosocial factors associated with condom use among African-American drug abusers in treatment.

Although strategies for decreasing injection drug use have met with moderate success, efforts to decrease high-risk sexual behaviors have been less successful. Because condom use reduces HIV transmission, it is critically important to identify the attitudinal, emotional, and behavioral factors associated with using condoms. This study evaluated the relationship between condom use and various psychological and behavioral variables among heterosexual, African-American, cocaine-dependent men within the context of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model (ARRM). Subjects who used condoms (n = 52) reported si…

Aspects of comfort and safety of condom. A study of two thousand intercourses among volunteer couples.

In nearly 2,000 intercourses 14 different types of condoms were tested by 80 heterosexual and seven homosexual volunteer couples. The test couples were generally quite experienced in the use of condoms. It appears that the condoms rarely (1.3%) ruptured or slipped off during the actual intercourse. This means that emphasis must be put on consistency and skill in the use of condoms rather on technical improvements in the promotion of condoms as a means of preventing the spread of sexually transmitted infections like HIV. Lubricated condoms and condoms that were not too small were preferred by b…

Correlation between knowledge on transmission and prevention of HIV/STI and proficiency in condom use among male migrants from Africa and Middle East evaluated by a Condom Use Skills score using a wooden penile model.

BACKGROUND: Migrants in Italy are prevalently young adults, with a higher risk of sexual transmitted infections (STI) and HIV infection. Promoting consistent as well as correct use of condoms could reduce failure rate due to their improper use. The aim of our study was to evaluate Condom Use Skills among a migrant population recently landed in Italy, hosted in a government center for asylum seekers. METHODS: The study sample was composed of 80 male migrants. Sanitary trained interviewers submitted a questionnaire to participants to investigate age, provenience, marital status, educational lev…

A Pilot Trial of a Sexual Health Counseling Intervention for HIV-Positive Gay and Bisexual Men Who Report Anal Sex without Condoms.

BACKGROUND: Even in the presence of promising biomedical treatment as prevention, HIV incidence among men who have sex with men has not always decreased. Counseling interventions, therefore, continue to play an important role in reducing HIV sexual transmission behaviors among gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. The present study evaluated effects of a small-group counseling intervention on psychosocial outcomes and HIV sexual risk behavior. METHOD: HIV-positive (HIV+) peer counselors administered seven 2-hour counseling sessions to groups of 5 to 8 HIV+ gay and bisexual

Clinical breakage, slippage and acceptability of two commercial ultra-thin polyurethane male condoms compared to a commercial thin latex condom: a randomised, masked, 3 way crossover, multi centre controlled study (SAGCS 2).

BACKGROUND: Although natural rubber latex remains dominant as the primary manufacturing material for male condoms synthetic materials first introduced in the early 1990s address many of the limitations of latex including the risk of allergies. Polyurethane elastomers allow condoms to be made significantly thinner to provide greater sensitivity and encourage greater use of condoms for contraception and STI prophylaxis. The primary objective of this Study was to evaluate the breakage, slippage and acceptability of two ultra-thin polyurethane condoms against a thin control latex male condom, desi…

Condom catheter tamponade versus surgical adjuncts for PPH in placenta previa and accreta: A prospective study.

Postpartum hemorrhage in placenta previa and accreta is difficult to manage, especially in low-resource settings where costly devices like Bakri balloons are not readily available. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the effectiveness of a condom catheter in controlling hemorrhage during 29 cesarean deliveries. Patients were managed with tamponade alone or in combination with placental bed suturing and/or uterine artery ligation. Results showed significant differences in hemostasis time and blood loss. The combination of tamponade with uterine artery ligation was most effective, while pla

A systematic review of the association between history of sexually transmitted infections and subsequent condom use in adolescents.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common among adolescents. According to the Health Belief Model, cues to action influence preventive behaviors. Cues to action can include health experiences such as being diagnosed with an STI. The impact of a history of STIs on subsequent condom use among adolescents remains largely unexamined, despite high rates of recurrence and their health impacts. This project aimed to systematically review the literature on the association between curable STIs and subsequent condom use among adolescents. The systematic review, reported following PRISMA guidelin

Examining the mediating and moderating roles of social marketing behavioural enhancers regarding consistent condom use.

Since their importance was highlighted by Ayikwa and De Jager, social marketing behavioural enhancers (SMBEs) have been investigated in terms of their causal and correlational relationships with the intention to use condoms (IUC) and consistent condom use (CCU), as people often fail to act on their intentions. However, scrutiny of their mediating and moderating roles could provide insights pertinent to the design of effective HIV and AIDS preventative programmes. This study examined whether perceived behavioural control (PBC) and IUC interact with exposure to HIV and AIDS information (EI), eas…
