BACKGROUND: The nursing and midwifery educator workforce is increasingly seen as key to sustaining healthcare, driving professional education, and shaping nursing knowledge. However, debates often focus mainly on numbers, such as shortages, recruitment, and expanding capacity. Less attention is given to the institutional and epistemic factors impacting academic nursing work.
AIMS: To critically examine how commodifying nursing education affects academic identity, faculty work, educator sustainability, professional formation, and the future of nursing knowledge.
DESIGN: Discursive paper.

OBJECTIVES: Chinese-funded projects in Africa continue to grow in scale, and as a result Chinese expatriate workers face elevated health risks from tropical vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and schistosomiasis. Limited evidence is available on the infection risk profiles and unmet health service needs of Chinese workers while stationed abroad.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted between September and October 2023 among Chinese employees working in African countries; and data was collected through a structured questionnaire informed by the Dahlgren-Whitehead mo

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease that is often described as an epidemic or pandemic of the 21st century. General practitioners (GPs) play a crucial role in managing it, yet multiple barriers hinder effective care. This study explores Austrian GPs' experiences in obesity management, their self-assessed knowledge and care competencies, and the perceived barriers to optimal treatment.
METHODS: A quantitative online survey was conducted among GPs in October and November 2023. The questionnaire covered prevention, treatment, barriers, and experiences in managing overweight

Maternal healthcare providers are key stakeholders in safeguarding maternal and newborn health. This study employed a descriptive phenomenological design to explore the experiences of maternal healthcare providers who contracted the novel coronavirus disease, known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in Ghana. A purposive sample of seven maternal healthcare providers from a quasi-government hospital was engaged in face-to-face interviews. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using inductive thematic analysis. The results showed that participants experienced shock and g

During the underbalanced pressure drilling, the conical rubber core of the rotary blowout preventer((RBOP) is susceptible to alternating cyclic stress due to the alternating passage of the drill pipe body and its joint, which can easily lead to fatigue cracking and sealing failure. To improve the performance of the rubber core, the constitutive parameters of the rubber were obtained by fitting the uniaxial tension and compression test results with the Yeoh constitutive model. Subsequently, the finite element model of the dynamic sealing was established to simulate the sealing and stress law of

BACKGROUND: The fear of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the preventive measures taken during the health crisis affected both people's lifestyles and the health system. This nationwide study aimed to investigate the impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalizations and mortality related to geriatric syndromes (GS) in older adults in France.
METHODS: The French National Health Data System was used to compare hospital admissions (excluding the main diagnosis of COVID-19) and mortality rates (using multiple-cause and initial-cause analyses, and both includi

Burn injury severity is currently determined by estimating the total body surface area (TBSA) burned, but this method fails to capture the severity of subsequent functional consequences. Alternatively, cutaneous functional units (CFUs)--skin segments that accommodate for movement and commonly become contracted--can be used to more accurately estimate burn severity based on functional consequences. Bilateral hands account for 81.3% of the body's CFUs, though only account for 5% of TBSA. However, hand burn survivors can have worse physical outcomes (ie, contractures, deformities) after burn inju

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the sexual health and well-being of individuals, directly through risk of contracting COVID-19, and indirectly through government lockdowns. Government restrictions were especially strict and long-lasting in Australia, they also varied by state, offering an interesting opportunity to study the impacts of varying restrictions. This study compares the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting restrictions on chlamydia treatment prescriptions during 2020, through to July 2021 between different states and demographic groups in Australia.

Black and Latinx individuals, and in particular women, comprise an essential health care workforce often serving in support roles such as nursing assistants and dietary service staff. Compared to physicians and nurses, they are underpaid and potentially undervalued, yet play a critical role in health systems. This study examined the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic from the perspective of Black and Latinx health care workers in support roles (referred to here as HCWs). From December 2020 to February 2021, we conducted 2 group interviews (n = 9, 1 group in English and

INTRODUCTION: Austere clinical settings, including remote military installations, face unique challenges in screening pregnant women for aneuploidy. The objective of this study was to compare the direct and indirect prenatal costs of traditional 2-part serum-based screening to cell-free DNA (cfDNA) for detection of trisomies 18 and 21 for a military treatment facility with limited in-house perinatal resources.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay as a surrogate for an austere clinical environment. A prenatal cost of care analysis incorporating direct and indirect

OBJECTIVE: There is some speculation that an intact distal anal sphincter complex is of decisive importance for continence, although the external anal sphincter (EAS) is considered to be a single functional and anatomical entity. On tomographic translabial ultrasound (TLUS), the caudal slice at the level of the subcutaneous EAS is currently omitted from the diagnostic algorithm due to the prevalence of artifact at that level. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of assessment of the subcutaneous EAS on tomographic TLUS for anal incontinence (AI).
METHODS: This was a ret

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a pandemic affecting health and wellbeing globally. In addition to the physical health, economic, and social implications, the psychological impacts of this pandemic are increasingly being reported in the scientific literature. This narrative review reflected on scholarly articles on the epidemiology of mental health problems in COVID-19. The current literature suggests that people affected by COVID-19 may have a high burden of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety disorders, stress, panic attack, irrational anger, impuls

BACKGROUND: Premature discharge is a pervasive problem in methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. Although a number of demographic variables have consistently been found to impact MMT retention, method of payment has received considerably less attention. A notable limitation of prior work is that most studies classify all patients who leave treatment early, irrespective of reason, as treatment dropouts and fail to account for specific reasons.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to determine whether method of payment for MMT services was associated wi

Background: Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is an inflammatory condition of the lung that develops at least 48⁻72 h after admission. HAP is contracted by both intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU patients, but no studies have examined the risk of HAP in patients admitted to the emergency department (ED). This study investigated the risk of developing HAP in ED patients and compared the occurrence of HAP 3⁻10 days after the first day of hospitalization in patients hospitalized via ED with those hospitalized via outpatient clinics. Methods: We analyzed the 2010 National Inpatient Sample data

AIM: Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions, resulting in abnormalities of posture and movement. Children with dystonia are at risk of developing fixed musculoskeletal deformities (FMDs). FMDs cause pain, limit function and participation and interfere with care. We aimed to explore factors relating to the development of FMD in a large cohort of children with dystonia.
METHOD: The case notes of all children referred to our Complex Motor Disorder service between July 2005 and December 2011 were reviewed. Data from 279 children (median age 9 years 10 mon
