Effects on alcohol and substance use of a school-based training intervention for adolescents with ADHD.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be at risk for early, escalating patterns of alcohol and substance use via academic, peer, and familial impairment. Existing school-based interventions for youth with ADHD effectively target these risk factors, yet their effects on alcohol and substance use have not been explored. We examined the immediate and long-term alcohol and substance use outcomes of an evidence-based school-based intervention for adolescents with ADHD. METHOD: A total of 186 (Mage = 15, 79% boys, 78% White, 11% Hispanic) adolescents wit

A meta-analysis of electrophysiological biomarkers of reward and error monitoring in substance misuse.

Substance use disorders are characterized by marked changes in reward and error processing. The primary objective of this meta-analysis was to estimate effect sizes for the reward positivity (RewP) and error-related negativity (ERN), two event-related potential indicators of outcome monitoring, in substance users compared to controls. The secondary objective was to test for moderation by demographic, substance type, and EEG experiment parameters. Final PubMed searches were performed in August 2023. Inclusion criteria were substance use disorder/dependence or validated self-report of substance

Systematic review of intervention descriptions in randomised controlled trials with injectable agents for temporomandibular disorder using TIDieR and PEDro scales.

The effectiveness of healthcare depends on clinical trials in which the benefits and harms of interventions are assessed and accurately reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the description of randomised controlled trial (RCT) interventions with injectable substances in painful temporomandibular joint disorder after arthrocentesis. RCTs with patients aged ≥ 18 years old, with temporomandibular disorder that analysed the use of intra-articular substances after arthrocentesis, comparisons with arthrocentesis/other injectable techniques, with joint pain and mandibular mov

Trends in use of prescription stimulants in the United States and Territories, 2006 to 2016.

BACKGROUND: Stimulants are considered the first-line treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the US and they are used in other indications. Stimulants are also diverted for non-medical purposes. Ethnic and regional differences in ADHD diagnosis and in stimulant use have been identified in earlier research. The objectives of this report were to examine the pharmacoepidemiological pattern of these controlled substances over the past decade and to conduct a regional analysis. METHODS: Data (drug weights) reported to the US Drug Enforcement Administration's Automation of …

Pharmacological management of Huntington's disease: an evidence-based review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the increasing body of published reports on pharmacological interventions in Huntington's disease (HD), an evidence based review (EBR) of treatment studies has not yet been published. METHOD: Systematic literature searches were done using Medline (1965-August 2005), the central database in the Cochrane Library (1969-August 2005), and reference lists published in review articles and other clinical reports. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were classified as level-I-studies in this paper. Level-II evidence was assigned to non-randomized, controlled clinical studies. Lev

The initiation and administration of drugs for advanced life support by critical care nurses in the absence of a medical practitioner.

Current legislation does not permit the administration of first line resuscitation medications by suitably qualified Division 1 registered nurses (RNs) in the absence of a medical officer. This omission by the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981 (Vic) and the Drugs, Poisons and The Controlled Substances Regulations 1995 (Vic) leaves many critical care nurses in a vulnerable legal position. The primary aim of this study was to gauge the view of critical care nurses with respect to lobbying for change to the current legislation. In addition, the study aimed to explore and describe …

Effects of hydrocodone rescheduling on opioid use outcomes: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate opioid prescribing, dispensing, and use in relation to hydrocodone-containing product (HCP) rescheduling. METHODS: Seven biomedical databases and grey literature sources were searched with keywords and database-specific controlled vocabulary relevant to HCP rescheduling for items published between January 2014 and July 2019. We included English-language quasi-experimental studies that assessed changes in HCP and other opioid prescribing, dispensing, utilization, and opioid-related health outcomes before and after HCP rescheduling. A data extraction sheet was created for

[Drugs and crime].

In law-related problems on drugs and crime, there are two types: (1) possession/use of drugs, (2) crimes caused by mental distress after the use of drugs. In this paper, I will focus on the former type called 'drug crimes'. Since drugs cause medically negative effects on the human body, the management/use of drugs is limited by the law which prescribes penalties. At the present, the management/use of narcotics, other mentally stimulating drugs, opium and its raw material, an opium poppy, cannabis, and antihypnotics are limited by six laws, including criminal laws. In this paper, I will introdu

Identifying the role of (dis)inhibition in the vicious cycle of substance use through ecological momentary assessment and resting-state fMRI.

Functional inhibition is known to improve treatment outcomes in substance use disorder (SUD), potentially through craving management enabled by underlying cerebral integrity. Whereas treatment is challenged by a multitude of substances that patients often use, no study has yet unraveled if inhibition and related cerebral integrity could prevent relapse from multiples substances, that is, one's primary drug of choice and secondary ones. Individuals with primary alcohol, cannabis, or tobacco use disorders completed intensive Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) coupled with resting-state functi

Substance P immunoreactivity in Rett syndrome.

Severe autonomic dysfunction occurs in Rett syndrome (RS). Substance P, a tachykinin peptide that localizes to several brain regions, including the autonomic nervous system, is reduced in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with RS. The anatomic localization and intensity of substance P immunoreactivity and glial fibrillary acidic protein-positive astrocytes in the brains of 14 patients with RS were compared with those in the brains of 10 age-matched normal patients. Substance P immunoreactivity expression was significantly decreased in RS tissue compared with control tissue in the following r

Study of pressure pain and cellular concentration of neurotransmitters related to nociception in episodic tension-type headache patients.

The pressure pain threshold of 30 patients affected by tension-type headache was assessed and the values compared with those of a group of 30 age-matched control subjects. In the patient group, pressure pain threshold values were related to the blood cell concentration of some neurotransmitters which are considered to be involved in the genesis and modulation of pain (beta-endorphin levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells [PBMCs], substance P and serotonin concentrations in platelets). The pressure pain threshold was significantly lower in tension-type headache patients than in control su

Morbidity induced by the infiltration of foreign substances into the buttocks: A systematic review.

The infiltration of substances into the buttocks for esthetic purposes can cause local or systemic damage. These infiltrated substances, known as adjuvants, foreign substances, and polymers, often lack sufficient and frequently controversial evidence. To identify the systemic complications associated with substances locally infiltrated in the buttocks for treatment, we conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA criteria. Of 275 publications, 29 met the eligibility criteria: 3 systematic reviews, 6 case series, and 20 case reports. The study comprises 463 cases, mainly women (87%), with

Evaluation of previous substance dependence genome-wide significant findings in a Spanish sample.

BACKGROUND: Substance dependence is a chronic and relapsing disorder explained by genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of our study is to replicate previous genome-wide significant (GWS) hits identified in substance dependence in general or in cocaine dependence in particular using an independent sample from Spain. METHODS: We evaluated, in a Spanish sample of 1711 subjects with substance dependence (1011 of them cocaine dependent) and 1719 control individuals, three SNPs identified as GWS in previous studies: rs1868152 and rs2952621 (located near LINC02052 and LINC01854, respectiv

Evaluation of lung epithelial permeability in the volatile substance abuse using Tc-99m DTPA aerosol scintigraphy.

AIM: Chronic inhalant use is associated with significant toxic effects, including neurological, renal, hepatic, and pulmonary damage. However, there is a paucity of reports regarding respiratory complications in inhalant abusers. The aim of this study was to evaluate pulmonary epithelial permeability in the volatile substance abuse (VSA) using Tc-99m DTPA aerosol scintigraphy. METHODS: This study included 18 patients with volatile substance abuse and 18 volunteer controls. All of patients and controls were smokers. Tc-99m DTPA aerosol scintigraphy was performed in all cases. Time-activity cur

Substance abuse may hasten motor onset of Huntington disease: Evaluating the Enroll-HD database.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between substances of abuse and age at motor onset (AMO) in patients with Huntington disease (HD) in a large and diverse patient population. METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study of the Enroll-HD database. Participants were determined to belong to 1 of 3 substance abuse groups: (1) tobacco abusers, (2) alcohol abusers, and (3) drug abusers. A group of participants who had never abused substances served as a control group. The average AMO of patients in the substance abuse groups was compared to the control group. The number of CAG re

Prefrontal cortex activity is reduced in gambling and nongambling substance users during decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: Poor decision-making is a hallmark of addiction, whether to substances or activities. Performance on a widely used test of decision-making, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), can discriminate controls from persons with ventral medial frontal lesions, substance-dependence, and pathological gambling. Positron emission tomography (PET) studies indicate that substance-dependent individuals show altered prefrontal activity on the task. Here we adapted the IGT to an fMRI setting to test the hypothesis that defects in ventral medial and prefrontal processing are associated with impaired decisio

[The effect of controlled hypotension during spinal surgery on kidney function].

The effect of controlled hypotension on renal function in patients operated on for idiopathic scoliosis of the spine was examined (n = 20). The deformity was corrected under general anesthesia by posterior fusion using Harrington's instrumentation during controlled hypotension induced by sodium nitroprusside. The control group included 20 patients suffering the same deformity and operated on in the same way but without hypotension. Renal function tests were performed before and during the operation and continuously for 102 h after surgery. In the group with controlled hypotension (medium arter

Chemsex and childhood trauma: evidence from a explorative matched case-control analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Chemsex refers to the intentional use of illicit psychoactive substances to facilitate or enhance sexual experiences, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM), and is associated with substantial physical and mental health risks. The relationship between chemsex use and childhood trauma remains insufficiently explored. This study examined differences between chemsex users and an control group in substance use patterns, childhood trauma, and assessed associations between trauma severity and substance use. METHODS: In a matched case-control design, 31 chemsex users and
