Rehabilitation of a periodontally compromised case using the conical crown system. Part II.

The aim of this two-part treatment series is on the one hand to emphasize the difficulties a clinician is confronted with when planning complex cases, and on the other hand to reveal the rationale supporting the final treatment plan selection. Among the challenging cases to be considered are periodontal compromised rest dentitions requiring prosthodontic rehabilitation. For these patients the decision-making process deals with the indications and limitations of both the fields of fixed and removable prosthodontics. The first part of this article deals with the various prosthodontic treatment o

Provisional use of a natural tooth crown following failure of replantation: a case report.

Despite a wide range of treatment options available, traumatized teeth may be inevitably lost on certain occasions. This case report presents an alternative treatment option for the premature loss of a traumatized maxillary central incisor because of extensive root resorption and mobility. A fixed appliance-type provisional prosthesis was fabricated by using the patient's natural clinical crown from the extracted tooth. This measure proved to be a very adequate, esthetic treatment solution before a permanent restorative plan could be developed in the future.

The relationship between cardiovascular xerogenic medication intake and the incidence of crown/root restorations.

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective, longitudinal cohort study quantified the strength of the association between xerogenic cardiovascular medication use and dental restorations, using the latter as a proxy measure for dental caries experience. METHODS: Study data were collected from 11 years of electronic clinical/pharmacy records in two large dental group practices associated with managed care organizations (MCO). Records were extracted for all members who were at least 55 years old at the end of the 11 year window, and had at least 48 months of concurrent dental, medical, and pharmacy coverage.

Partial pulpotomy and tooth reconstruction of a crown-fractured permanent incisor: a case report.

Pulp exposure due to traumatic injuries in the anterior permanent teeth of adolescents is a common occurrence. A vital permanent maxillary incisor with complex crown fracture and pulp exposure was treated by partial pulpotomy and assessed clinically through pulpal sensitivity tests and radiographically for periapical healing. Partial pulpotomy consisted of pulp tissue removal to a depth of only 1 to 2 mm, then capping the pulpal wound with calcium hydroxide, lining with resin-modified glass-ionomer cement, and restoration with resin composite. At each recall (7, 15, 21, 50, 90, 150, and 250 da

Direct chiral resolution of phenylalkylamines using a crown ether chiral stationary phase.

A direct, isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic method is described for the enantiomeric resolution of a number of phenylalkylamines, namely, racemic cathinone, amphetamine, norephedrine, and norphenylephrine, without sample derivatization. The separations were achieved on an S-18-crown-6-ether chiral stationary phase known as CR(+). The chromatographic parameters alpha (separation factor) and Rs (resolution factor) lay within a narrow range for all compounds used in this study except for cathinone, which resulted in high alpha and Rs values. The recognition mechanism for this colu

Partial pulpotomy in crown-fractured permanent incisor with hyperplastic pulpitis: a case report.

Hyperplastic pulpitis, which is regarded as one type of asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis, occurs usually in young teeth where pulps are exposed by caries or trauma. If apices are mature, root canal therapy is recommended. In this case, the success of partial pulpotomy in a crown-fractured permanent incisor with hyperplastic pulpitis, which had been contaminated with oral microflora for six months is reported.

Upper central incisor and canine tooth crown size in 47,XXY males.

Enamel and dentin thicknesses were measured in permanent tooth crowns of 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome) males. In 47,XXY males, enamel thickness in maxillary central incisors was significantly greater than that in control males or females, and dentin thickness in incisors and canines was significantly greater than that in control females, but smaller than that in normal males. These findings confirm the concept that human dental growth is affected by sex chromosomes. Amelogenesis is promoted by both X and Y chromosome genes, and sexual dimorphism in average tooth size is evidently determined by…

[Anodontia. 4: Crown shape of teeth of the anodontia with anhydrotic and hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphological variation of teeth of the partial anadontia with anhydrotic and hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia. Qualitative and quantitative observations were made for the upper central incisor and upper first molar in the anadontia of 18 patients. Moreover, some phylogenetic consideration was taken on the variability of the shapes. The results were as follows. 1) The crown shapes of 28 upper permanent central incisors were classified into 5 types based on the presence and/or size of mamelons, from rudimental teeth such as the cone-shaped type

[Effect of the macrocyclic polyether 15-crown-5 on the ionic permeability of excitable membranes].

The macrocyclic polyether 15-crown-5 at a concentration of 5 . 10(-5)-10(-3) M reduced the frequency of the contractions of an isolated rat auricle, increasing the refractory period of the contractions. The polyether lowered the rate of activation of the slow input current of rat spinal ganglionic neurons and blocked the sodium channels of the electroexcitable membrane without disturbing the function of activation and inactivation mechanisms. The compound under study considerably delayed the onset of and decelerated reactivation of the sodium input current. These actions were calcium-dependent

Qualitative Analysis of the Cementation Line of Metal-Ceramic Crowns Luted With Resin Cement: A Clinical Case Report.

Unlike conventional water-soluble luting cements, which gradually dissolve in oral fluids and partially self-correct over time, polymerized resin cement is insoluble and will not be displaced from the restoration margin without active mechanical intervention. This case report describes the qualitative analysis of the cementation line of three metal-ceramic crowns 1 year after placement using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the replica technique, and the subsequent clinical management. A 45-year-old female patient presented with crowns on Teeth 11, 21, and 22 cemented with a self-adhesiv…

Hybrid Sonochemical-Pressure Fabrication of tri-element nanohybrids for advanced biological protection in resin and metal dental crowns.

Premature failure of dental crowns is frequently associated with bacterial colonization, secondary caries, and persistent biofilm formation at restoration interfaces. In this study, Sn-Ag-Al trimetallic nanohybrids were synthesized through a novel hybrid sonochemical-pressure-assisted approach and ultrasonically embedded onto metal and resin dental crowns to develop durable antibacterial and antibiofilm coatings. Structural and surface characterization using XRD, FE-SEM-EDX, BET, and Raman analyses confirmed the formation of crystalline nanohybrids with homogeneous elemental distribution, nano…

Development and performance evaluation of novel preformed primary tooth crowns based on glass fiber-reinforced vinyl-epoxy polymer.

To overcome the limitations of the presently existing preformed crowns on primary teeth in terms of esthetics, mechanical properties, and longevity in the repair of extensive defect areas, an innovative glass fiber-reinforced resin preformed crown on primary teeth has been created and tested in the present research. The material is based on a copolymer system of modified vinyl-epoxy resin and acrylic resin, incorporated with inorganic fillers such as zirconia and reinforced with glass fibers, forming a glass fiber-reinforced vinyl-epoxy polymer (GF-VEP). The in vitro data proved that the physi…
