Developing fetal alveolar epithelial cells secrete fluid in primary culture.

The developing pulmonary epithelium secretes a Cl(-)-rich fluid during fetal life by a process involving active transport. To determine if alveolar cells contribute to this fluid production, we studied developing fetal rat alveolar epithelial cells (18-day gestation) in primary culture. Fetal alveolar epithelial cells aggregated to form cystic, alveolar-like structures with a fluid-filled lumen. On light and transmission electron microscopy, the cells were polarized with microvilli facing the lumen. Dexamethasone and triiodothyronine stimulated lamellar body production in many of the epithelia

Management of symptomatic sacral perineural cysts.

BACKGROUND: There has been no consensus on the optimal treatment of symptomatic sacral perineural cysts. Most previous reports concerning the management methods were either sporadic case reports or a series of limited cases. This study is to further optimize the management for patients with symptomatic sacral perineural cysts by analyzing the outcomes of a cohort of patients who were treated with different strategies. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We reviewed the outcomes of 15 patients with symptomatic sacral perineural cysts who were managed by three different modalities from 1998 through 2010. Six

In vitro cyst formation of ADPKD cells.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common genetic disorder characterized by the relentless growth of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys. Mutations in PKD1 and PKD2, genes that encode polycystin 1 and 2, respectively, are responsible for most cases of ADPKD. Currently, the cellular mechanisms responsible for cyst formation remain poorly understood. In vitro models have been used by researchers to investigate cellular processes for cyst formation in carefully controlled experimental conditions. Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, a distal tubule epithelial cell

Percutaneous aspiration and drainage with adjuvant medical therapy for treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts.

AIM: To determine the efficacy and success of percutaneous aspiration irrigation and reaspiration (PAIR) in the management of hepatic hydatidosis. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with 32 hepatic hydatid cysts had PAIR. Twenty-two patients received at least 2 wk of drug therapy before the procedure was carried out to reduce the risk of recurrence from spillage during the procedure. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia with a 19-gauge 20 cm long needle, the cyst was punctured, cystic content (approximately 30 mL) was aspirated by a 12-14 F pigtail catheter and aspirated fluids were s

Management of cystic lesions of the pancreas.

Pancreatic cystic lesions are being increasingly identified. Clinical decision making is driven by the differential diagnosis of the cyst and, for the asymptomatic patient, its likelihood of causing harm. The fundamental issue is whether the cyst is neoplastic, and, if so, what is its risk for malignant degeneration. High-resolution computed tomography provides detailed information about cyst structure and may facilitate differentiation from mucin-secreting tumors of the pancreas. Magnetic resonance imaging has the potential added advantage of determining communication between the cyst and pan

Leukoencephalopathy with cerebral calcifications and cysts: clinical and pathological features in two adults.

Two adult patients diagnosed with Leukoencephalopathy with cerebral calcifications and cysts (LCC) were presented. Both patients had a long-term (8-10 years) following-up. Radiological findings of both patients revealed the characteristic signs of LCC: cerebral white matter abnormalities, calcifications, and cysts. In case 1, the initial CT scan showed a low-density area in the right frontal lobe and it had developed into a large cystic lesion after 8 years. Histopathological determination revealed that the cyst wall was associated with hemorrhage, angiomatous formation, and some Rosenthal fib

Endoscopic fenestration of middle fossa arachnoid cysts: a technical description and case series.

BACKGROUND: Arachnoid cysts are intra-arachnoidal cerebrospinal fluid collections most frequently seen in the middle cranial fossa. The optimal method of treatment for symptomatic arachnoid cysts remains controversial and includes cyst shunting, open craniotomy and endoscopic fenestration. All these techniques, however, have been associated with the development of postoperative subdural fluid collections. We describe a new endoscopic transcortical technique that attempts to avoid this complication. METHODS: Six patients with middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts were treated with endoscopic fe

The relationship between cell proliferation, Cl- secretion, and renal cyst growth: a study using CFTR inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: In autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), cAMP-stimulated cell proliferation and Cl- secretion via the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) Cl- channel drive the enlargement of fluid-filled epithelial cysts. To investigate how CFTR blockers inhibit cyst growth, we studied cAMP-dependent Cl- secretion, cell proliferation, and cyst growth using type I Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells as a model of renal cyst development and growth. METHODS: We grew MDCK cysts in collagen gels in the presence of the cAMP agonist forskolin, measured Cl- secre

Imaging diagnosis--intracranial epidermoid cyst in a Doberman Pinscher.

A 4-year-old Doberman Pinscher was evaluated for chronic progressive central vestibular disease and aggressiveness. A cyst-like lesion was identified in the region of the left cerebellopontine angle. The lesion was hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Differentials included an epidermoid or dermoid cyst, cystic neoplasm, and brain abscess. Hyperintensity on subsequent fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images excluded an arachnoid cyst. The histopathologic diagnosis was epidermoid cyst within the fourth ventricle.

Infantile Choroid Plexus Papilloma with Multiple Peritumoral Cysts.

Infantile choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) associated with multiple peritumoral cysts is a rare variant of CPP, and clinical course and optimal management are largely unknown. A 9-month-old boy presented with a large solid tumor in the left lateral ventricle associated with multiple peritumoral cysts, arachnoid cysts, and hydrocephalus containing xanthochromic fluid with high protein content. Shrinkage of these cysts and resolution of hydrocephalus were achieved after total resection of the hypervascular solid part of the tumor. Histological examination confirmed the solid part of the tumor as C

The relationship of antibody levels to the clinical spectrum of human neurocysticercosis.

One hundred proven cases of cerebral cysticercosis were studied with an enzyme linked immunoassay (ELISA) employing cyst fluid as antigen, with a view to detecting specific antibodies in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Antibody levels were correlated with the clinical presentation of the patients, the type and number of cysts detected on their brain scans, the anatomical position of these cysts and the presence of lymphocytes in the CSF. Patients could be divided into two distinct categories, one with low levels of antibody in the serum and absent antibody in the CSF, and the other with h…

Intact bronchogenic cyst presenting as a lung mass provoking a pleural effusion: a rare presentation.

This case report describes a 49 year old woman with an intra-parenchymal bronchogenic cyst masked on chest x-ray examination by a pleural effusion. The cyst was intact. It is likely that the cyst provoked the pleural effusion by repetitive mechanical irritation of the pleura. At surgery, the cyst was removed and the pleural effusion drained without recurrence. The cyst was unilocular and measured 8.5 x 7.0 x 0.8 cm with a smooth and glistening lining. It was filled with approximately 300 ml of clear fluid. Microscopic examination confirmed the bronchogenic cyst. This is the first case of an in

[A case of recurrent cyst of Müllerian duct].

A case of recurrent cyst of Müllerian duct is reported. The patient had complained of dysuria and underwent resection of Müllerian duct cyst in May, 1977. Five years later (in July, 1982) at 50 years old, he again visited our clinic with the complaint of urinary retention and perineal mass formation. Recurrent multilocular cyst of Müllerian duct was diagnosed by CT and transrectal ultrasonotomography. Transabdominal extirpation of Müllerian duct cyst, combined with perineal approach, was performed under general anesthesia. The cyst was multilobular, 165 g in weight and 17 X 6.5 X 4 cm in size.

Spontaneous rupture of a nonparasitic liver cyst complicated by intracystic hemorrhage.

a case of spontaneous rupture of simple liver cyst complicated by intracystic hemorrhage is described. This rare condition was detected in a 61-year-old man who underwent left trisegmentectomy of liver under a suspected diagnosis of cystadenocarcinoma because of elevated serum levels of carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 and DUPAN 2, and the presence of an intracystic structure. The resected specimen showed a benign liver cyst with intracystic hematoma and high levels of CA19-9 and DUPAN 2 in the cystic fluid. It is suggested that cyst rupture may increase serum levels of tumor markers whose level

Rodent Gut Bacteria Coexisting with an Insect Gut Virus in Tapeworm Parasitic Cysts: Metagenomic Evidence of Microbial Selection in Extra-Intestinal Clinical Niches.

In medicine, parasitic cysts (e.g., brain cysticerci) are believed to be sterile, and are primarily treated with antiparasitic medications, not antibiotics, which could prevent abscess formation and localized inflammation. This study quantified the microbial composition of parasitic cysts in a wild rodent, using multi-kingdom metagenomics to comprehensively assess if parasitic cysts are sterile, and further understand gut microbial translocation and adaptation in wildlife confined environments, outside the gut. Analysis was conducted on DNA from two hepatic parasitic cysts from a feline tapewo

Breast cyst aspiration.

The breast mass is a clinical problem commonly encountered by family physicians. Fine-needle and core biopsy techniques require training and cytopathologist support. In contrast, breast cyst aspiration using a 21- or 22-gauge needle is a simple, cost-effective, minimally invasive procedure. The technique is easy to learn and can be practiced on a breast model. Breast cyst aspiration may be attempted in many women who present with a palpable, dominant breast mass. If clear fluid is aspirated and the mass resolves, malignancy is unlikely, and breast cyst is the probable diagnosis. In this situat

Detection of specific Echinococcus granulosus antigen 5 in liver cyst bioptate from human patients.

Eighty one liver cyst fluid samples obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in human patients were examined for specific E. granulosus antigen 5 (Ag5). The patients were suspected cases of hepatic cystic echinococcosis (CE) but protoscolices and hooks had not been found in the cyst bioptates. Presence of Ag5 was tested for using enzyme linked immuno-sorbent assay (ELISA) technique with monoclonal antibody against Ag5. Sensitivity of the test was approximately 1 ng of antigen/1 ml of examined fluid. Positive results were obtained in the control group of six patients having protoscolice…
