Sleep disruption and interstitial cystitis symptoms in women.

Four hundred and seven women with interstitial cystitis participated in a Web-based study. One hundred percent of participants had poor sleep, with a mean sleep quality score of 13.4. This indicates very poor sleep. The predictor variables (nocturia, pain, and urinary urgency) were significant predictors of sleep quality when controlling for confounding variables.

Management of patients with interstitial cystitis: a case study.

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by urinary frequency, urgency, and pain in the bladder or pelvis that for some can be debilitating. At present, IC is without cure, yet various management modalities are available. This article provides a general overview of the history, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of IC. A specific case study that focuses on a surgical management option is highlighted.

Gangrenous cystitis in a 42-year-old male.

Gangrenous cystitis is now an extremely rare condition since the widespread use of antibiotics. The authors report a case of gangrenous cystitis in a previously fit and normal 42-year-old male who presented in acute urinary retention. He underwent a partial cystectomy during an exploratory laparotomy for clinical deterioration and peritonitis. Diagnosis of this rare disease is challenged by its low incidence and lack of characteristic pathognomic features, resulting in delayed diagnosis and increased morbidity and mortality. The authors review the literature to date on the aetiology, presentat…

[Hyperbaric oxygenation in combined treatment of interstitial cystitis].

A total of 116 female patients with painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis aged 32-78 years (mean age 56 +/- 2.4 years) entered the trial. They were divided into two groups according to treatment. Group 1 (n = 54) received 10-day combined conservative treatment consisting of antimicrobial drugs (if urinary infection was diagnosed), angioprotectors, mast cell activity stabilizers and bladder instillation with combined solution. Group 2 included 62 patients whose treatment included complex anti-inflammatory therapy in combination with HBO sessions (7-10 sessions in barochamber OKA-MT, 2.…

Gangrenous cystitis: report of a case and review of the literature.

Gangrenous cystitis is an extremely rare condition: only a total of 240 cases worldwide have been reported so far. Most of these cases have occurred in the preantibiotic era. After the advent and widespread use of antibiotics in clinical practice, only sporadic cases have been observed. We report a case of gangrenous cystitis in an 83-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of acute abdomen. The main causative factor was overdistension of the bladder due to urinary retention. The patient underwent total cystectomy and bilateral ureterocutaneostomy with a favorable outcome. The incidence, et…

Xanthogranulomatous cystitis: a challenging imitator of bladder cancer.

Xanthogranulomatous cystitis is a rare, benign, chronic inflammatory disease of the bladder, mimicking malignancy with unknown etiology. Herein, we report a 57-year-old man who presented with pollakiuria, nocturia, dysuria, left flank pain, and a palpable mass on the right lower abdomen. Computerized tomography demonstrated an obstructing 10-mm stone in the lower third of the left ureter and a 6-cm solid mass on the right at the anterolateral wall of the bladder. The mass presented local perivesical invasion at the anterolateral side. Cystouretroscopy revealed a mass protruding into the bladde…

[A case of empysematous cystitis which was found incidentally].

A 49-year-old female visited our hospital with a complaint of pelvic pain. She was under treatment for diabetes mellitus and dilated cardiomyopathy. Radiography revealed a radiolucent area in the bladder. We suspected vesicorectal fistula. Computed tomography showed gas within the bladder wall and the lumen. Cystoscopy revealed diffuse emphysema in the bladder wall without fistula. These findings were consistent with a diagnosis of emphysematous cystitis. The urine culture yielded Escherichia coli. After urinary drainage and antibiotic therapy, she was cured of emphysematous cystitis.

Emphysematous cystitis in a chemically-induced diabetic dog.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare disorder caused by bacterial infection and characterized by gas accumulation within the bladder wall with cyst formation. This report describes the histopathological characteristics of emphysematous cystitis found in a diabetic female beagle induced by streptozotocin and alloxan. Macroscopically, multiple cyst-like structures were observed on the cut surface of the urinary mucosa. During fixation, small specimens cut from the mucosa floated on the surface of the fixative solution. Histopathologically, multiple cysts were lined with a single layer of flattened c…

Cystitis increases colorectal afferent sensitivity in the mouse.

Studies in humans and rodents suggest that colon inflammation promotes urinary bladder hypersensitivity and, conversely, that cystitis contributes to colon hypersensitivity, events referred to as cross-organ sensitization. To investigate a potential peripheral mechanism, we examined whether cystitis alters the sensitivity of pelvic nerve colorectal afferents. Male C57BL/6 mice were treated with cyclophosphamide (CYP) or saline, and the mechanosensitive properties of single afferent fibers innervating the colorectum were studied with an in vitro preparation. In addition, mechanosensitive recept…

[From cystitis to bacterial prostatitis: experience with levofloxacin].

According to data reported by Naber (2008), urinary tract infections (UTIs), represent the main nosocomial acquired infection (40%); these infections are second, in order of frequency, only to respiratory tract infections in ambulatory setting, and account for 20% of ambulatory uro-nephrologic disease. Nowadays, the UTI's classification recognizes five different groups, represented by acute, non complicated lower urinary tract infections (cystitis), acute non complicated pyelonephritis, complicated UTI's with/without pyelonephritis, urosepsis and special forms, such as prostatitis, epididimiti…

Treatment of interstitial cystitis with hydrodistention and bladder training.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of hydrodistention (HD) and bladder training for interstitial cystitis (IC). From 1997 to 2006, 361 consecutive IC patients were treated by HD, followed by bladder training. Each patient was followed up using a diary for 8 weeks after HD weekly and monthly thereafter. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated using the average of the voided volumes and the voiding frequency. The mean +/- standard deviation of the pre-HD daytime voided volumes and voiding frequency were 110.0 +/- 47.0 ml and 14.7 +/- 11.0, respectively. Furthermore, the nocturnal valu…

Depression, abuse and its relationship to interstitial cystitis.

This study evaluated the prevalence of depression, sexual abuse, and physical abuse among women diagnosed with interstitial cystitis (IC). One hundred forty-one subjects completed the validated Beck's Depression Inventory II Questionnaire (BDI-II) and the validated Drossman Abuse Questionnaire. Ninety-seven (69%) subjects scored 14 or higher on the BDI-II, corresponding to depression. When compared to the US prevalence of 9%, this was significantly higher. Fifty-one subjects (36%) reported sexual abuse which is higher than the US average. The prevalence of childhood sexual abuse in the sample …

Incidence and clinical characteristics of interstitial cystitis in the community.

We utilized physician-coded diagnoses and chart reviews to estimate the incidence of interstitial cystitis (IC) in women. A computer search of the Kaiser Permanente database was performed to identify newly coded diagnoses of IC (ICD-9 code 595.1) between May 2002 and May 2005. Chart reviews were performed and patient demographics, diagnosing physicians, and symptom characteristics were recorded. The IC incidence rate was 15 per 100,000 women per year. The mean age of the patients was 51 years (range 31-81 years). The most common presenting symptoms were frequency (70%), dysuria (52%), urgency …

Bilateral S3 stimulator in patients with interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVES: To show the value of placing bilateral sacral nerve stimulators in patients diagnosed with interstitial cystitis with the symptoms of frequency, urgency, and pain. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of patients who had had bilateral S3 stimulators placed during a 6-month period. At consultation immediately before undergoing the procedure and on subsequent postoperative visits, these patients completed the Urinary Distress Inventory short form and voiding diaries. Patients were excluded if sacroneuromodulation had been attempted to be placed previously, if patients…

[Eosinophilic cystitis as symptom of an idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophilic cystitis as a symptom of an idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is a very rare clinical picture with an unpredictable course. A combination of both symptoms has not been described previously in the peer reviewed literature. As a result of this myeloproliferative disease there is a pathologically increased production of eosinophils in the blood which, in turn, can cause organ complications. Cardiovascular, thromboembolic and pulmonary disease have been reported as complications in the oncological literature. CASE REPORT: A girl aged 2 years and 4 months developed a…
