BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis ("kissing disease") is an infection caused by Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV, human herpes virus 4).

SUMMARY: The study presents a new technic for the examination of the lacrymal duct; i.e. the endoscopy. It demonstrates the advantages and permits to open up new ways to act on the lacrymal duct.
METHODS AND PATIENTS: The seventy two patients examined by means of endoscopy between January 1997 and May 1997 have had all a clear pathology: epiphora, chronic or acute dacryocystite in a remission phase. Lacrimal sump syndrome is an uncommon cause of failed dacryocystorhinostomy. Small osteotomy was reported as the major cause of this syndrome. This study aimed to examine the rate of symptomatic improvement of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) in Japanese infants treated with conservative management within the 1st year of age.
