Intrauterine USG examination becomes more and more important in diagnosing developmental lesions of cerebral nervous tissue. However, CT-imaging is a method of choice, especially after parietal closure (13, 16). The character and etiology of porencephaly, congenital or acquired, is diversiform and often difficult to recognize (18). This paper presents an attempt at assessing different forms of porencephaly, taking into account congenital hydrocephalus in children by means of CT-imaging.

Thirty-three fetuses with an enlarged cisterna magna (10 mm or more) were evaluated to determine factors that might be associated with an underlying chromosome abnormality. Eighteen fetuses (55%) proved to have a chromosome abnormality, including trisomy 18 or trisomy 18 variant (12), trisomy 13 (three), Turner syndrome (one), or other rearrangements (two). Among various risk factors analyzed, the absence of ventricular dilatation correlated most strongly with a chromosome abnormality. Chromosome abnormalities were found in 17 of 22 fetuses (77%) lacking ventricular dilatation, compared with o

Background and Objectives: Posterior fossa anomalies (PFAs) represent a heterogeneous group of congenital malformations involving the cerebellum and adjacent structures. Prenatal counseling remains challenging because neurodevelopmental outcomes vary substantially according to the specific anomaly. This study aimed to evaluate ultrasonographic and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, associated anomalies, genetic test results, and perinatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes of prenatally diagnosed PFAs in a tertiary care population. Materials and Methods: This retrospective st

OBJECTIVE: To delve into the clinical and CT imaging manifestations of hydranencephaly, a rare congenital post-neurulation disorder occurring during the second trimester, characterized by the destruction of cerebral hemispheres and cranial cavity filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This research aims to enhance our understanding of hydranencephaly and establish a standard for its imaging diagnosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using the brain CT images and clinical data of 26 pediatric patients diagnosed with hydranencephaly.
RESULTS: At birth, the primitive reflexes we

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prenatal manifestations of Emanuel syndrome (ES) by retrospectively analyzing the results of prenatal diagnosis.
METHODS: Thirteen fetuses were collected from five hospitals, of which six were confirmed with 47,der(22)t(11;22; ES) by karyotype and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Seven were diagnosed with 46,t(11;22) balanced translocations by karyotype, including one de novo mosaic 46,XX,t(11;22). In 3/7, CMA was performed but did not identify chromosomal imbalances. The results of prenatal diagnoses were reviewed, including ultrasound examinations and genetic

INTRODUCTION: Chronic herniation syndromes other than tonsillar herniation are not well-recognized. Transtentorial uncal herniation in its chronic form has been reported in only few case reports (Horowitz et al., J Neuroimaging 12:78-79, 2002; Naidich et al., Radiology 158:431-434, 1986; Ng and Valiante, J Clin Neurosci 16:944, 2009; Ng and Valiante, J Clin Neurosci 16:984, 2009). We hereby illustrate a case with this rare finding, including MR imaging, and analyze this phenomenon.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old girl had a resection of a cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma at 5 years of age. Two mon

Ritscher-Schinzel also known as cranio-cerebello-cardiac (3C) syndrome is a very rare clinical entity. The striking features of this syndrome are cerebellar, cardiac and craniofacial abnormalities. Life threatening features of this syndrome are generally associated with cardiac abnormalities. We here present prolonged respiratory problems due to pulmonary hypertension in a preterm baby with Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To identify important factors in the differential diagnosis of renal cysts associated with hyperechogenic kidneys.
METHODS: This was a retrospective multicenter study. We identified 93 fetuses presenting between 1990 and 2002 with hyperechogenic kidneys and which had a diagnosis of nephropathy confirmed later. We analyzed retrospectively the prenatal ultrasound findings of those fetuses which were found sonographically to have renal cysts.
RESULTS: Of the 93 fetuses presenting with hyperechogenic kidneys and with a later diagnosis of nephropathy, there were 28 with autosomal domi

Formation of the mouse cerebellum is initiated in the embryo and continues for a few weeks after birth. Double-mutant mice lacking platelet-derived growth factor C (PDGF-C) and that are heterozygous for platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (Pdgfc-/-; PdgfraGFP/+) develop cerebellar hypoplasia and malformation with loss of cerebellar lobes in the posterior vermis. This phenotype is similar to those observed in Foxc1 mutant mice and in a human neuroimaging pattern called Dandy Walker malformation. Pdgfc-Pdgfra mutant mice also display ependymal denudation in the fourth ventricle and gen

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a common prenatally diagnosed cerebellar malformation, characterized by cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, upward rotation of the hypoplastic vermis, and posterior fossa enlargement with torcular elevation. DWM is associated with a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental abnormalities such as cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments, which cannot be explained solely by cerebellar malformations. Notably, the pathogenesis of these symptoms remains poorly understood. This study investigated whether fetal structural developmental abnormalities in DWM ext

BACKGROUND: Posterior fossa malformations are among the most diagnosed central nervous system (CNS) anomalies detected by ultrasound (US) in prenatal age. We identified the pathogenic gene mutation in a male fetus of 17 weeks of gestation with US suspicion of familial Dandy-Walker spectrum malformation, using Next Generation Sequencing approach in prenatal diagnosis.
METHODS: Whole exome sequencing (WES) approach has been performed on fetal genomic DNA. After reads preprocessing, mapping, variant calling, and annotation, a filtering strategy based on allelic frequency, recessive inheritance,

The authors report on the clinical course of two infants with severe hemophilia A (HA) and concomitant progressive hydrocephalus that required management with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The first child, with known HA, presented with a spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage and acquired hydrocephalus. He underwent cerebrospinal fluid diversion with a temporary external ventricular drain, followed by placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. The second child had hydrocephalus secondary to a Dandy-Walker malformation and was diagnosed with severe HA during preoperative evaluation. He underwent p

OBJECTIVE: To describe the sonographic appearance of fetal posterior fossa anatomy at 11-14 weeks of pregnancy and to assess the outcome of fetuses with increased intracranial translucency (IT) and/or brainstem-to-occipital bone (BSOB) diameter.
METHODS: Reference ranges for brainstem (BS), IT and cisterna magna (CM) measurements, BSOB diameter and the BS : BSOB ratio were obtained from the first-trimester ultrasound examination of 233 fetuses with normal postnatal outcome (control group). The intraobserver and interobserver variability of measurements were investigated using 73 stored ultras

BACKGROUND: Clomiphene citrate (CC) is the first line drug for subfertility treatment. Studies assessing the association between CC and birth defects have been inconclusive.
METHODS: We used data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a population-based, multi-site case-control study of major birth defects. Women from 10 US regions with deliveries affected by at least one of >30 birth defects (cases) and mothers of live born infants without a major birth defect (controls) who delivered October 1997-December 2005 were interviewed. The exposure of interest was reported CC use in the

INTRODUCTION: Prenatal investigations make it possible to follow up malformative intracranial cysts from their detection in utero through the postnatal period. By including those that will remain silent postnatally, precious information can be provided about their real natural history.
DIAGNOSIS: Contrary to common belief, the vast majority of these lesions, if not associated with other fetal anomalies, are benign in nature, remain clinically silent, do not evolve or even frequently regress spontaneously. They are compatible with a strictly normal life, whether requiring postnatal treatment o

PURPOSE: To determine whether the MR findings of callosal dysgenesis suggest that the partially formed corpus callosum in humans is the result of arrested growth or delayed continued development.
METHODS: The MR scans of 25 patients with callosal dysgenesis were reviewed to determine whether the observed corpus callosum corresponded to the form and position of a portion of a normal corpus callosum, as suggested by a theory of arrested growth.
RESULTS: In 10 of the 25 cases, the partially formed corpus callosum corresponded to a portion of a normal corpus callosum. In the remaining 15 cases,

Widely diverging opinions on the optimal therapy for intracranial cerebrospinal fluid cysts (CSF), mainly arachnoid cysts and the Dandy-Walker cysts, exist. Excision of the cyst walls in the treatment of the Dandy-Walker cyst has been replaced by shunting procedures, but the recommended method for primary treatment of arachnoid cysts in childhood is still cyst wall excision. Membrane excision is, however, often complicated by recurrence, subsequently requiring shunting-procedures. In a series of 19 cases primary shunting of intracranial CSF cysts proved to be a reliable method. In those cases
