PURPOSE: To investigate dark adaptation during hypoxia in patients with chronic respiratory failure.
METHODS: At three visits, dark adaptation was recorded by computerized dark adaptometry in 13 patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency treated by long-term oxygen therapy. At visits 1 and 3, the patients were administered their usual oxygen supplement. At visit 2, no oxygen was given. Morphologic changes in the tegmentum vasculosum (TV) of adult quail after high intensity sound exposure were studied. Quail were continuously exposed to 115 dB SPL, 1500 Hz pure tone in a sound field for 12 h and either sacrificed immediately (0 day), 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 10 days later. Study of areas of cicatricial alopecia in a 42 year old black woman by dermoscopy with oil revealed uniform pale dots associated with a radiating pigment network. Scalp biopsy showed a cicatricial alopecia with lichen planopilaris and multiple fibrous tracts. The pale dots appear to correspond to focal decrease in epidermal melanin pigment overlying the site of the fibrous tracts and may provide a dermoscopic clue in analysing the cicatricial alopecias.

The K+ secretory epithelium of the vestibular labyrinth (dark cells) was impaled with glass microelectrodes in order to test the hypothesis that it contains a large Cl- conductance. Twenty five patients with primary biliary cirrhosis were studied for vitamin A state. In nine patients found to have low circulating vitamin A concentrations no abnormality was found on electro-oculography or in dark adaptation. Monocular closure surgically performed during development by suturing the eyelids induced less hyperopia in the closed eye of light reared kittens (+0.95 Diopters) in comparison to the closed eyes of lid sutured dark reared kittens (+2.61 D). The normal control cats were also slightly hypermetropic (+0.69 D).
