To investigate the clinical manifestation, disease course, and prognosis of migraine patients with or without personality disorders. This cross-sectional study evaluated 61 patients with migraine diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Personality disorders were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-II). Migraine severity was assessed with the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6). We also used a structured clinical interview to diagnose comorbid mood disorders. Of the 61 patients, 20 (32.8%) had personality disorders. Personality di

The Addiction Severity Index and NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule data of 20 methadone-maintained subjects with "fake bad" invalid profiles on the Personality Assessment Inventory, 15 methadone-maintained subjects with "fake good" invalid profiles, and 158 methadone-maintained subjects with valid profiles were compared. The findings revealed a number of significant group differences on both measures with the highest scores for the fake bad subjects and lowest scores for the fake good subjects. These findings suggest that the response sets exhibited in response to the Personality Assessment I

Psychiatric morbidity was studied in a sample of 176 opioid-dependent men recruited from prison and treatment services. The Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) was used for psychiatric assessment. Lifetime and current prevalence of any mental disorder, excluding substance use disorders, reached 90.3% and 66.1%, respectively. The most prominent lifetime DSM-III axis I disorders were anxiety (31.8% lifetime and 16.5% last month) and affective (25% lifetime and 19.9% last month) disorders. Antisocial personality disorder (ASP) had a lifetime prevalence of 69.3%. Higher rates of affective and anxi

The lifetime prevalence of specific DSM-III-defined psychiatric disorders among 1243 Mexican-American and 1309 non-Hispanic white residents of two Los Angeles communities is reported from the Los Angeles site of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) research study. Results from household interviews in response to the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule revealed overall rates of disorders for the total Los Angeles sample and ethnic subsamples that were similar to rates reported from the initial three ECA sites. Non-Hispanic whites reported far more drug abuse/depe

This study examined potential subgroups of patients with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD) based on novelty-seeking tendencies. Eighty-two outpatients with DSM-IV generalized SAD were recruited from an outpatient anxiety clinic and assessed with the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire. The novelty-seeking subscales, reflecting risk-prone and disinhibited behavior tendencies, served as dependent measures in a series of cluster analysis procedures. Two qualitatively different SAD subgroups were identified: (1) low novelty-seeking tendencies and (2) high-novelty-seeking tendencies. T

Sixty-eight patients with a history of suicide attempt were compared to 340 patients without a history of suicide attempt using the MCMI-III, a frequently used test for measuring personality disorders. Patients with a suicide attempt history scored higher on Schizoid, Avoidant, Depression, Dependent, Passive-Aggressive (Negativistic), Self-Defeating, and Paranoid and significantly lower on Histrionic and Compulsive and scored higher on all clinical syndrome scales except for Drug Dependence and Delusional Disorder. Logistic regression correctly predicted the no-suicide-history group with 97% a

Alzheimer's disease (AD) can present as a variety of clinical profiles. Although the most common presentation is that of a progressive amnestic disorder with subsequent involvement of other cognitive functions and personality alterations, there are numerous other clinical profiles. AD can present as a focal cortical degenerative syndrome with the clinical features dependent on the regions of the brain involved. Some of these syndromes include disturbances of language, visuospatial skills, attentional functions, executive processes and praxis. The neuropathological substrate of these disorders

The prolactin (PRL) response to the administration of serotonin (5HT) agonists is an index of central nervous system 5HT activity. This index is blunted in association with hostile aggression in personality and depressive disorder patients without substance abuse. We tested whether the PRL response to the oral administration of the partial 5HT agonist meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (MCPP), 0.35 mg/kg, was associated with a measure of trait hostility, the Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), in cocaine addicts who were completing a 3-week detoxification and rehabilitation program. We also teste

The present study examines the effect of loss on treatment outcome in 92 persistently somatizing patients treated in an inpatient program. P … ment prior to entry into the program compared with the recent loss group and a greater incidence of dependent personality disorder. The recent loss group showed the best outcome following treatment. The results support the concept that persistent somatization may arise from many precipitating factors. Assessing loss experiences in the patient may be an important factor in devel …

A group of 329 hospitalized drug abusers were evaluated for a current or past diagnosis of alcoholism. The alcoholic drug-dependent patients (n = 169, 51.4%) were then compared with the nonalcoholic patients (n = 160, 48.6%) with regard to sociodemographic, clinical and family history characteristics. The alcoholics were significantly more likely to receive a DSM-III diagnosis of major depression, with melancholia; other Axis I diagnoses were equally distributed between the two groups. Antisocial personality disorder was also significantly more prevalent among the alcoholic patients. The alcoh

Though multiple personality disorder has been diagnosed with increasing frequency over the past decade, its validity has been called into question. A brief review of the literature indicates a likelihood of socio-cultural influences and iatrogenicity in many if not most cases. Symptoms of multiple personality disorder parallel other psychiatric syndromes but are usually given diagnostic priority. The author has described five cases diagnosed multiple personality disorder by another health professional in which iatrogenic influences are clearly evident. All renounced both the diagnosis and the

A study of 50 consecutive individuals referred for pretrial psychiatric examination, presumably because of previous psychiatric hospitalization (82 percent), indicated that antisocial personality, alcoholism, or drug dependence was present in 80 percent. Schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder was seen in about a third of the subjects, usually associated as well, however, with antisocial personality, alcoholism, or drug dependence. There were no significant differences in index crime between those with or without schizophenia bipolar affective disorder. It is concluded that the latter cond

Measures of temperament and early environment were obtained from 108 patients with major depression using the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) and Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI). TPQ and PBI measures distinguished between depressed patients and controls. Depressed patients with comorbid axis I disorders appear to be temperamentally different from those who do not have these disorders. Those with alcoholism have higher novelty seeking (NS) scores; those with panic disorder have higher harm avoidance (HA) scores; and those with simple phobia have higher persistence (P) scores. M

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the relationships between specific personality disorders and DSM-III axis I conditions in a community sample.
METHOD: A total of 810 subjects were examined by psychiatrists in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey, part of the Epidemiological Catchment Area Program of the National Institute of Mental Health. A semistructured examination, the Standardized Psychiatric Examination, was employed to assess axis I and axis II conditions. Scales for compulsive and antisocial personality disorders were derived from DSM-III criter

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent among adults with addictive disorders, but little is known about addiction patterns associated with ADHD diagnosis. This study examined addiction severity in patients with co-occurring addictive disorders and ADHD controlling for the potential influence of associated psychiatric comorbidity. Data were collected in French outpatient addiction treatment centers. A total of 217 patients seeking treatment for substance or gambling addiction were included. At treatment entry, participants were interviewed with the Addiction Severit

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative immunological disease causing significant impairment in all life areas. Therefore, personality changes are observed and associated with higher prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders. Considering this relationship, we hypothesized that clinical symptoms and personality disorders are more prevalent in MS and that dysfunctional psychological mechanisms mediate the path from personality disorders to clinical symptoms.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 43 patients with MS (age M = 41.9, SD = 11.5) and 31 controls (age M = 39.8

AIM: To obtain preliminary data on personality and clinical/psychopathological predictors of combined use of psychoactive drugs in patients with psychostimulant dependence.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty-nine inpatients were examined. Family history of drug dependence, personality disorders, clinical/psychopathological characteristics and disease course (breakdowns, relapses, remissions) were compared in patients with psychostimulant dependence (n=35) and patients who used other psychoactive substances (n=54).
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Combined use of psychoactive substances is predicted by a co

Lasting rehabilitation success is proven to be achievable through appropriate follow-up care. A group living project for five rehabilitees had therefore been established in the state-assisted housing sector, after selection of a suitable group of inpatients for this model project. Among the criteria for selection were: rehabilitation success so far, i.e. vocational reintegration, and suitability for group living. The difficulties encountered in the search for an appartment are described. The concept of our group living project included joint living of attendent and rehabilitees for an unlimite

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Persons with opioid use disorder (OUD) and co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD) are understudied. We identified whether co-occurring AUD was associated with OUD treatment type, compared associations between treatment type and six-month treatment retention and determined whether co-occurring AUD moderated these relationships.
METHODS: We used an observational cohort study design to analyze insurance claims data from 2011 to 2016 from persons aged 12-64 with an opioid abuse or opioid dependence diagnosis and OUD treatment claim. Our unit of analysis was the treatment epi
