Henna is a naturally occurring brown dye made from the leaves of the tree Lawsonia inermis. The active ingredient of henna is lawsone (2-hydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone). It is traditionally used in Islamic and Hindu cultures as a hair coloring and as a dye for decorating the nails or making temporary skin tattoos. Actually, henna has a very low allergic potential. In most cases, allergic reactions not caused by henna, but by the chemical coloring additives that are added to henna mixtures. These additives include agents such as daiminotoluenes and diaminobenzenes. In this article, we report a cas

Occupational Contact Dermatitis (OCD) is one of the most common work-related diseases. High risk occupations are in health care, hairdressing, food sector and metal industry. OCD tends to become chronic; persistent OCD often results in impaired quality of life and loss of work ability. The purpose of this article is to review the present knowledge on the factors which determine individual susceptibility to acquire OCD. Recent discoveries regarding genes involved in the skin barrier, inflammatory response and biotransformation of xenobiotics provide more insight in the individual susceptibility

A 39-year-old woman presented with pruritic eczematous plaques on her face, neck, and right hand that she had had for approximately 2 months, following an abrasive injury caused by the deployment of an airbag in a car accident. Results of patch testing were positive for several medicaments and propylene glycol (PG). The patient's condition cleared after discontinuation of all topical products containing PG and her other identified allergens, but she noted flares of her contact dermatitis following the ingestion of foods containing PG. A subset of patients will have a recurrence of dermatitis a

INTRODUCTION: Turpentine is an oleoresin obtained from various species of pine. It contains a volatile oil (oil of turpentine) which is responsible for its properties and this is the form generally used. Opportunity for contact with turpentine is widespread. It is universally used as a solvent to dissolve and thin lacquers, varnishes and paints. It is also an ingredient in many liniments and cold remedies. Turpentine is regarded as both a local irritant and a sensitizer. Cases of allergic contact dermatitis in painters, mechanics, shoe repairers and home decorators have been reported.

BACKGROUND: Irritant papulovesicular dermatitis after cutaneous exposure to the sap of Agave Americana, which contains chemical irritants such as calcium oxalate and saponins, is well known, but purpuric dermatitis is rare in such cases.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 52 year-old man with purpuric dermatitis of the legs mimicking purpura vasculitis that appeared a few hours after he had cut down a large Agave with a chain-saw.
DISCUSSION: Our case is quite similar to three other cases found in the literature. In all four cases the patients had been using machines causing projections of

We present the case of a 72-year-old woman observed for dermatitis on the legs followed by apperance of erythema on the eyelids. She had a past history of peripheral venous insufficiency and had been using self home-made Aloe vera juice over the legs for relief from pain. Patch tests showed positive reactions to the leaf of Aloe, the macerated Aloe jelly, and nickel sulfate. Although most manufacturers process Aloe products avoiding its irritant extracts, and probably as a consequence reports of allergic reactions are rare, one must remember that the growing popularity on the use of Aloe produ

A case of contact dermatitis resulting from temporary tattooing with henna is described. The skin was stained using a dye described as 'black' henna. This is produced by the addition of paraphenylenediamine (PPD) to traditional henna dye in order to make temporary skin tattoos appear darker. Sensitisation to PPD may also cause sensitivity to printers' inks, clothing dyes, hair dyes, local anaesthetics, sulphonamides, and para-aminosalicylic acid. The case of contact dermatitis described responded to application of topical steroid with no sequelae; however patients may be left with hypo- or hyp

Occupational contact dermatitis is often of multifactorial origin, and it is difficult to determine the relative significance of the various contributing factors. Contact allergies are relevant in 20-50% of recognised occupational contact dermatitis cases. The reported frequency in different studies varies, depending on differences in how occupational diseases are notified and recognised, in types of occupation in a geographical area, and the "quality" of the dermatological examination, including the accuracy of the diagnostic patch-test investigation. However, the clinical relevance of the re
