Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is a reactive granulomatous dermatitis; the umbrella term includes interstitial granulomatous dermatitis and interstitial granulomatous drug reaction, in addition to PNGD. The histological findings of PNGD include leukocytoclastic vasculitis, neutrophilic infiltrates, and collagen degeneration with palisades of histiocytes and small granulomas. Clinically, the patients show symmetrical, smooth papules that are skin-colored to red, some with central umbilication or crusting, located mainly on the elbows and extremities. PNGD usually occ

Hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic agent commonly used to treat hypertension, chronic edema from congestive heart failure or cirrhosis, and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. Diuretics work by increasing urine output and are classified based on the specific renal segments they act on. As with all medications, they are not without their side effects. The most significant and serious include hypovolemia and electrolyte disturbances. Other more rare adverse effects include dermatitis and hypersensitivity reactions. We discuss an 86-year-old male who presented to the emergency room with complaints of

INTRODUCTION: Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for metastatic colorectal cancer, advanced non-small cell lung cancer, metastatic renal cell cancer and glioblastoma. Bevacizumab has also been used off label in ophthalmology for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, retinopathy of prematurity, and other chorioretinal vascular disorders. Numerous case reports have described various cutaneous reactions in response to bevacizumab thera

Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), which is also known as Lyell's syndrome, is a widespread, life-threatening, mucocutaneous disease that is particularly observed secondary to drugtaking and less commonly secondary to infections and immunization. Carbamazepine is associated with benign pruritic rash in 10-15% of the patients, but the life threatening dermatological syndromes like exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, the Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and TEN are rarely seen with the carbamazepine treatment. The 32 year old female suffering from chronic backache, who was prescribed carba

The medical records of 158 dogs with visceral leishmaniasis confirmed cytologically and/or serologically were reviewed. Ages of affected dogs varied from nine months to 15 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1.3. The most common clinical manifestations of the disease were variable cutaneous lesions such as exfoliative dermatitis and skin ulcerations, chronic renal failure, peripheral lymphadenopathy or lymph node hypoplasia, masticatory muscle atrophy (i.e., chronic myositis), ocular lesions (i.e., conjunctivitis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, blepharitis, and uveitis), and poor body condition

In this second of two articles on adverse cutaneous drug reactions, the management of drug eruptions is reviewed. This necessitates, above all, a full history and may involve observation of the effects of drug elimination. Skin testing may be helpful in some circumstances, but is hampered by false positive and negative results, and lack of knowledge of the significant antigenic determinants for most drugs. In vitro tests are for the most part unreliable and are research tools. Challenge tests are safe in fixed drug eruption, but are absolutely contraindicated in Stevens-Johnson syndrome and to

Practical relevanceCutaneous immune-mediated diseases in cats can present with clinical signs of erythema, hair loss, scaling/crusting, and erosions with or without pruritus, mimicking many differential diagnoses such as hypersensitivity dermatitis and infections (eg, parasitic and fungal dermatitis). Veterinarians are encouraged to become familiar with the characteristic clinical features of various immune-driven skin disorders to permit early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.Clinical challengesDiagnosis and therapeutic management of feline immune-mediated skin diseases can be challenging.

Background: Nemolizumab is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in patients aged ≥12 years, combined with topical corticosteroids and/or calcineurin inhibitors, when the disease is not adequately controlled by topical prescription therapies. Given the limited duration of follow-up in clinical trials and the current lack of postmarketing surveillance data, further investigations to evaluate the long-term safety profile of nemolizumab are urgently needed. Methods: Adverse event (AE) signals were identified using disproportionality analysis with four algorithms: the

INTRODUCTION: Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease which is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania. Canids are the most important reservoir of the parasites; however, limited data are available on the species of Leishmania prevalent in these animals and their impact on human health. The objective of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of leishmaniasis in dogs from an inter-Andean region of Colombia during July 2016-July 2017, and to describe the clinical and histopathological features of the disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 155 dogs were subjected to clinical

In dogs with symptomatic or asymptomatic leishmaniasis, Leishmania infantum appears to induce a mixed Th1/Th2 immune response that in the sick dog may eventually result in tissue damage via different pathomechanisms, notably granulomatous inflammation (eg, nodular dermatitis, osteomyelitis), immune complex deposition (eg, glomerulonephritis), and/or autoantibody production (eg, polymyositis). This is a compensatory but detrimental mechanism generated mainly because of the insufficient killing capacity of macrophages against the parasite in the susceptible dog. Clinical disease is typically exe

Dapsone is one of the main constituents of anti-leprosy treatment and has been in use for various dermatological and non-dermatological indications since the 1940s. Dapsone-induced photosensitivity is a rare complication. Only 11 cases seem to have been reported in the literature. We report a case of dapsone-induced photosensitivity in an Indian patient with leprosy, and briefly review the literature. Dapsone (diaminodiphenyl sulphone or DDS) is the most commonly used anti-leprosy drug since the 1940s. Apart from leprosy, it is used for various other infectious and non- infectious dermatoses a

A 25-year-old donkey was referred for a generalized, pruritic and severe exfoliative dermatitis that had been evolving for several years, with deterioration in the last few months. Close examination of the skin surface revealed numerous small, dark, mobile elements identified as Ornithonyssus bacoti confirmed by DNA sequencing. The severity, type and topography of the lesions called for complementary examinations, leading to a second diagnosis of cutaneous epitheliotropic T-cell lymphoma. The lack of clinical improvement after antiparasitic therapy despite parasite clearance, suggests opportun

During the Second World War, thousands of captured British and Commonwealth troops were interned in prisoner-of-war (POW) camps in the Far East. Imprisonment was extremely harsh, and prisoners developed multiple pathologies induced by physical hardship, tropical infections and starvation. Immediately after the war, several POW doctors published their clinical experiences, including reports of skin disease caused by malnutrition. The most notable deficiency dermatoses seen in Far East POWs were ariboflavinosis (vitamin B2 or riboflavin deficiency) and pellagra (vitamin B3 or niacin deficiency).

The last decade has seen considerable advances in our understanding of the genetic basis of skin disease, as a consequence of high throughput sequencing technologies including next generation sequencing and whole exome sequencing. We have now determined the genes underlying several monogenic diseases, such as harlequin ichthyosis, Olmsted syndrome, and exfoliative ichthyosis, which have provided unique insights into the structure and function of the skin. In addition, through genome wide association studies we now have an understanding of how low penetrance variants contribute to inflammatory
