Coached efforts at diaphragmatic breathing were assessed as a means of increasing diaphragmatic movement in postoperative patients. Inductive plethysmography was used to measure compartmental tidal volumes of the abdomen (Vab) and the chest (Vc) in eight women (aged 41 +/- 16 years) who had no history of cardiovascular or pulmonary disease. We investigated the route of lymphogenous metastasis of cardiac cancer to the diaphragm, making a model of cardiac cancer using VX2 tumor of rabbit. Metastasis ratio of each lymph node in the experimental model indicated a correlation with clinical cases. To assess the effectiveness of wearing vaginal diaphragm rings in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence, 10 women with genuine stress incontinence were studied. Patients underwent urodynamic evaluation and perineal pad testing before and after fitted diaphragm rings were in place. Patients kept symptom diaries for 1 week without the ring and then for 1 week with the ring. They also gave an overall subjective evaluation of their experience. In this study, we found that sodium selenite was potent in inducing contracture of the mouse diaphragm. The possible mechanism of action of selenite was investigated. From 1970 to 1987, 62 patients, suffering from traumatic rupture of the diaphragm, have been treated. In more than 75% of the cases, other severe post-traumatic associated lesions were noticed. In 54 cases these concerned blunt trauma, most of which were due to road accidents. There were 53 lesions of the left hemidiaphragm. Early diagnostics were made 40 times (i.e. within 24 hours after the accident). We have examined factors influencing the rate of first referral to hospital for urinary tract infection among the 17,032 women taking part in the Oxford Family Planning Association contraceptive study. A literature review yielded no scientific basis for the currently accepted recommendations on the length of time spermicides used with diaphragms continue to kill sperm. An unusual case of congenital lower oesophageal diaphragm (web) associated with achalasia is described. An 18-year-old nulliparous girl presented with severe cachexia and aphagia following progressive dysphagia. A barium swallow demonstrated the achalasia, and the oesophageal diaphragm with a central pinhole opening was seen at endoscopy. Parenteral hyperalimentation was required for ten weeks prior to surgery. Circumferential excision of the oesophageal diaphragm in conjunction with Y-V advancement oesophagoplasty gave a good result.

A nine-month-old infant underwent plication of the diaphragm after an intercostal drain, during the neonatal period, causing phrenic nerve paralysis. The integrity of the phrenic nerve was proved by electromyography; EMG might differentiate between agenesis of the diaphragmatic musculature and other causes which usually do not produce complete blockage of the electric stimuli, and therefore muscle response will not disappear.
