Calf bioimpedance spectroscopy for determination of dry weight in hemodialysis patients: effects on hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Dry weight estimation in hemodialysis patients is still a substantial problem. Despite meticulous clinical assessment, fluid overload is common, leading to hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Segmental calf bioimpedance spectroscopy (cBIS) is a novel tool for dry weight assessment. Here we tested the hypothesis, that its clinical routine use reduces arterial hypertension and left ventricular mass. METHODS: Left ventricular mass (determined by magnetic resonance imaging), blood pressure and antihypertensive medication (defined daily doses, ddd) were assessed a

Graphene/quantum dot bionanoconjugates as signal amplifiers in stripping voltammetric detection of EpCAM biomarkers.

A sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) antigen, a common marker for tumors of epithelial origin, employing bionanoconjugates as signal-transduction labels has been developed. The bionanoconjugates were fabricated by carboxylation of the two-dimensional graphene oxide nanosheets (GRs) and immobilizing streptavidin and amine-functionalized CdSe quantum dots (QDs) on carboxylated GRs via carbodiimide coupling chemistry, followed by the immunoreaction with the biotinylated secondary antibodies. Since carboxylated GRs have a higher de

Standardization of microfluidic cell cultures using integrated organic photodiodes and electrode arrays.

Nanotechnology provides the tools to develop novel biosensors with improved performance, including sensitivity and response time that can be readily integrated into diagnostic devices. We have developed a miniaturized cell analysis platform to advance microfluidic cell cultures by combining two complementary, label-free and non-invasive cell analysis methods for the long-term monitoring of dynamic cell behavior. The novel dual-parameter cell-on-a-chip detects light scattering from adherent cells to provide information on cell numbers and intracellular granularity, while simultaneously performi

Early Detection of Age-Related Decline of Muscle Cell Mass by Intracellular Water Assessment Compared With MRI or DXA.

BACKGROUND: Ageing is commonly associated with a decrease in muscle strength, which is largely linked to decreases in skeletal muscle mass (SMM). The rate of the age-related decline in muscle strength is different from the rate of the age-related decline in SMM. Current estimation methods for SMM, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), evaluate both intracellular and extracellular water volumes, potentially overestimating atrophied muscle fibres. Recently, segmental bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (S-BIS), which distinguishes intracellular wat

Implementation of a decision aid for recognition and correction of volume alterations (Recova®) in haemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload is associated with mortality in haemodialysis patients, and 30% of patients remain fluid-overloaded after dialysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate if implementation of Recova®, a decision aid combining clinical assessment with bioimpedance spectroscopy, facilitates individualization of target weight determination and thereby contributes to improved fluid status in maintenance haemodialysis patients. METHODS: The impact of the implementation was measured as the proportion of participants at an adequate target weight at the end of the study, assessed as change

The Effect of Strict Volume Control Assessed by Repeated Bioimpedance Spectroscopy on Cardiac Function in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

Adequate fluid management plays an important role in decreasing cardiovascular risk in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We evaluated whether strict volume control monitored by bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) affects cardiac function in PD patients. This study is a secondary analysis of a multicentre, prospective, randomized, controlled trial. Fluid overload was assessed by the average overhydration/extracellular water (OH/ECW) at baseline, 6 months and 12 months. Patients were categorized as time-averaged overhydrated (TA-OH/ECW ≥15%) or normohydrated (TA-OH/ECW <15%), and echocardiographic

Relationship between volume status and possibility of pulmonary hypertension in dialysis naive CKD5 patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fluid overload is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can with time lead to poor prognosis regarding to the cardiovascular events. Serum NT-proBNP and OH/ECW might reflect fluid status of the patients, and the maximal tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRVmax) could reflect systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP). We investigated the relationship between markers of volume status and marker of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in non-dialysis CKD5 (CKD5-ND) patients. METHODS: Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS), echocardiography, and measurement of serum NT-proB

A Prospective Validation Study of Bioimpedance with Volume Displacement in Early-Stage Breast Cancer Patients at Risk for Lymphedema.

BACKGROUND: Although volume displacement (VD) is considered the gold standard for diagnosing breast cancer-related lymphedema, it is inconvenient. We compared bioimpedance (L-Dex) and VD measurements in a prospective cohort of breast cancer patients at risk for lymphedema. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2014, a total of 223 breast cancer patients were enrolled. Following exclusions (n = 37), 186 received baseline VD and L-Dex; follow-up measurements were performed at 3-6 months intervals for 3 years. At each visit, patients fitted into one of three categories: normal (normal VD and L-Dex); abnorma

Prediction of limb lean tissue mass from bioimpedance spectroscopy in persons with chronic spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a non-invasive, simple, and inexpensive modality that uses 256 frequencies to determine the extracellular volume impedance (ECVRe) and intracellular volume impedance (ICVRi) in the total body and regional compartments. As such, it may have utility as a surrogate measure to assess lean tissue mass (LTM). OBJECTIVE: To compare the relationship between LTM from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and BIS impedance values in spinal cord injury (SCI) and able-bodied (AB) control subjects using a cross-sectional research design. METHODS: In 60 subj

Determination of fluid status in haemodialysis patients with whole body and calf bioimpedance techniques.

AIM: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the ability of widely used bioimpedance techniques to assess dry weight (DW) and to predict a state of normal hydration in haemodialysis patients whose post-dialysis weight had been gradually reduced from baseline in successive treatments over time. METHODS: Calf bioimpedance spectroscopy (cBIS) was employed to determine DW (DW(cBIS) ) as defined by flattening of an intradialytic continuously measured resistance curve and by normalized resistivity (nRho) being in the gender-specific normal range. The wECV/TBW ratio was determined by 'classical' wr

A bioimpedance-guided computational framework for investigating frequency shifts in tumor treating fields therapy.

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) therapy applies intermediate-frequency alternating electric fields to disrupt tumor-cell proliferation. Although its effects are frequency-dependent, current clinical protocols commonly rely on fixed, empirically selected frequencies that may not fully capture treatment-related changes in tumor-cell dielectric properties over the course of prolonged therapy. Here, a lumped-parameter equivalent-circuit model of a cell suspension was used to quantify how defined changes in effective cell-suspension electrical properties are expressed as impedance-derivedβ-dispers

MXene-modified PMMA/chitosan composite e-skin scaffold: Bioelectronic and antibacterial assessment.

In tissue engineering, e-skin patches serve as wearable wound dressings for healing. In this study, electrospun nanofiber composites were developed by integrating PMMA, MXene, and chitosan (CS) to fabricate multifunctional e-skin scaffolds. The resulting PMMA-MXene-CS composite e-skin scaffolds exhibited a uniform fibrous morphology with average diameters of 600 ± 50 nm and high porosity (>85 %), providing an optimal microenvironment for tissue interfacing. Mechanical testing revealed that the PMMX:CS composite e-skin scaffold achieved a tensile strength of 13 MPa, a Young's modulus of 0.38 GP

Gd3+ and Bi3+ co-substituted cubic zirconia; (Zr1-x-y Gd x Bi y O2-δ ): a novel high κ relaxor dielectric and superior oxide-ion conductor.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer several advantages over lower temperature polymeric membrane fuels cells (PMFCs) due to their multiple fuel flexibility and requirement of low purity hydrogen. In order to decrease the operating temperature of SOFCs and to overcome the high operating cost and materials degradation challenges, the Cubic phase of ZrO2 was stabilized with simultaneous substitution of Bi and Gd and the effect of co-doping on the oxide-ion conductivity of Zr1-x-y Bi x Gd y O2-δ was studied to develop a superior electrolyte separator for SOFCs. Up to 30% Gd and 20% Bi were simult

Reducing Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema (BCRL) Through Prospective Surveillance Monitoring Using Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) and Patient Directed Self-Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is a chronic progressive disease that results from breast cancer treatment and nodal surgery. NCCN guidelines support baseline measurements with prospective assessment for early diagnosis and treatment. We sought to determine if baseline measurement with bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) and serial postoperative evaluations provide early detection amenable to conservative interventions that reduce BCRL. METHODS: Breast cancer patients with unilateral disease high-risk for BCRL from a single institution were evaluated from November 2014 to Dece

The association between bioimpedance analysis and quality of life in pre-dialysis stage 5 chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Protein-energy wasting is a significant problem in End stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Furthermore, it compromises the patient's Quality of life (QOL). Multifrequency Bioimpedance Spectroscopy (BIS) is a validated method to assess body composition in dialysis patients. There has been no data on the relationship between body composition and QOL in ESRD patients who were treated with different modalities. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between body composition as assessed by BIS and QOL in ESRD patients who received different treatment modalities. MATERIAL AND METHOD: T

One-Step CVD Growth of Monolayer/Multilayer MoS2 Hybrid Structure for Enhanced Photodetection.

Although monolayer MoS2 has been widely explored for optoelectronic applications, its light absorption is largely limited due to its sub-nanometer-scale thickness. In contrast, multilayer MoS2 exhibits strong light absorption, high carrier mobility, and excellent dielectric screening. To enhance the optoelectronic performance of MoS2, the growth of MoS2 heterostructures via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been extensively investigated. In this work, monolayer/multilayer MoS2 hybrid structures were grown by one-step CVD using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a seed promoter. The SDS was depo

Inkjet-Printed Rough Gold Microelectrode Arrays on Flexible Substrates for Neural Recording and Electrical Stimulation.

Microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are essential tools for recording and stimulating electrogenic tissues, but their fabrication typically depends on complex, costly, and mask-based cleanroom processes. While inkjet-printed MEAs have increasingly been explored as low-cost alternatives, most demonstrations have focused on cardiac cell recordings, with only a limited number of studies showing neuronal recordings. Furthermore, no work to date has demonstrated neuronal interfacing, combining single-unit recording with electrical stimulation, using inkjet-printed MEAs. Here, we investigate whether inkjet

Large Area Film of Highly Crystalline, Cleavable, and Transferable Semi-Conducting 2D-Imine Covalent Organic Framework on Dielectric Glass Substrate.

Two dimensional (2D) imine-based covalent organic framework (COF), 2D-COF, is a newly emerging molecular 2D polymer with potential applications in thin film electronics, sensing, and catalysis. It is considered an ideal candidate due to its robust 2D nature and precise tunability of the electronic and functional properties. Herein, we report a scalable facile synthesis of 2D imine-COF with control over film thickness (ranging from 100 nm to a few monolayers) and film dimension reaching up to 2 cm on a dielectric (glass) substrate. Highly crystalline 2D imine polymer films are formed by maintai
