In 54 patients undergoing elective or emergency aortocoronary bypass grafting, angiographic and electrocardiographic changes were studied. Five patients with unstable angina and five patients with evolving myocardial infarction were included. This study investigated the effect of calcium superphosphate on compost maturity and gaseous emissions during pig manure composting with woody peat as the bulking agent. Two treatments were conducted with or without the addition of calcium superphosphate (10% dry weight of the composting mass), which were denoted as the control and superphosphate-amended treatment, respectively. Crigler-Najjar syndrome is a rare inherited deficiency of bilirubin uridine diphosphate glucuronyl transferase, characterised by lifelong unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. We report anesthetic and postoperative management of a patient with this syndrome. A 64-yr-old man with Crigler-Najjar syndrome type II underwent cholecystectomy. Preoperative laboratory values included total bilirubin 8.4 mg.dl-1 and direct-bilirubin 1.8 mg.dl-1. He received epidural anesthesia combined with general anesthesia with nitorous oxide and isoflurane. He had no remarkable perioperative complications.

Human testicular slices were incubated in vitro in order to examine the direct effects of natural and synthetic oestrogens on testosterone secretion. In the presence of human chorionic gonadotrophin (10 IU per ml), oestradiol-17 beta (1 or 10 micrograms per ml) and ethinyl oestradiol (0.1, 1 or 10 micrograms per ml) inhibited testosterone release into the media in a dose dependent manner. The addition of estramustine phosphate, estromustine, diethylstilboestrol or diethylstilboestrol diphosphate in comparable concentrations produced no significant effects on testosterone release.

Platelet function was measured on 29 occasions in 16 adult patients in the asymptomatic steady state of sickle-cell anaemia. There was a significant increase in platelet number and micro-aggregate formation, and a lower aggregation threshold with adenosine diphosphate, compared with 23 healthy controls. Similar changes were found, however, in 12 splenectomised patients without sickle-cell diseases. The platelet hyperactivity of the sickle-cell steady state therefore reflects an increased circulating population of young, metabolically active platelets resulting from previous autosplenectomy.
