The relationship between impulsive verbal aggression and intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is the sole psychiatric diagnostic category for which aggression is a cardinal symptom. IED focuses on physical aggression, but researchers have argued for the inclusion of verbal aggression (VA) (e.g., arguing, threatening) as a part of the IED criteria set. The utility of VA in identifying clinically relevant aggression, however, is unknown. IED participants were compared to individuals without a marked history of physical aggression, but who report frequent (two or more times a week) VA, and non-aggressive personality-disorder individuals on behavioral

Levetiracetam in patients with impulsive aggression: a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: There are few controlled studies evaluating drug treatment for impulsive aggression. The objective of this study was to evaluate levetiracetam in patients with impulsive aggression, and whether diagnosis or other baseline characteristics predict response. METHOD: Outpatients with clinically significant impulsive aggression (meeting Coccaro et al. revised criteria for intermittent explosive disorder), without other psychiatric symptomatology clearly requiring treatment, were randomly assigned to levetiracetam or placebo, double-blind, for 10 weeks, at a variable dose with a maximum

Effect of impulsivity on cardiovascular and subjective reactivity to smoking cues.

Individuals with high levels of impulsivity are more likely to smoke and may have greater difficulty quitting than other smokers. Although the specific mechanisms mediating this relationship are not explicitly known, one candidate is disproportionate cigarette craving in response to environmental smoking cues. We assessed the effect of impulsivity on three measures of cue reactivity. Regular smokers (n=75) were exposed to a smoking cue and a neutral cue in 2 counterbalanced experimental sessions. Cigarette craving, heart rate (HR), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were used to index cue reacti

A Genetic Assessment of Dopamine Agonist-Induced Impulse Control Disorder in Patients With Prolactinoma.

CONTEXT: Dopamine agonist (DA)-induced impulse control disorder (ICD) represents a group of behavioral disorders that are increasingly recognized in patients with prolactinoma. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the genetic component of the underlying mechanism of DA-induced ICD. METHODS: Patients with prolactinoma receiving dopamine agonist (cabergoline) treatment were included in the study. These patients were divided into 2 groups: patients who developed ICD due to DA and patients who did not. Patients were evaluated for polymorphisms of the DRD1, DRD3, COMT, DDC, GRIN2B, TPH2, OPRK1, OPRM1,

Gaming disorder and stigma-related judgements of gaming individuals: An online randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The inclusion of gaming disorder (GD) in the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) has generated scholarly debate, including claims about its potential stigmatizing effects on the wider gaming population. The present study aimed to estimate the effect of addiction-based and non-addiction-based conceptualizations of problem gaming on stigma of gamers. DESIGN: This preregistered experiment involved a 2 (health information: addiction-related or non-addiction-related) × 3 (vignette: problem, regular or casual gamer) randomized, between-subjects desig

Impulse Control Disorders with Short-term Use of Cabergoline in Macroprolactinomas: A Prospective Study with a Brief Review of Literature.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are less-emphasized adverse effects of dopamine agonists. Evidence on prevalence and predictors of ICDs in patients with prolactinomas is limited and confined chiefly to cross-sectional studies. This was a prospective study performed to investigate ICDs in treatment-naïve patients with macroprolactinomas (n = 15) using cabergoline (Group I), compared to consecutive patients of nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas (n = 15) (Group II). Clinical, biochemical, radiological parameters and psychiatric comorbidities were evaluated at baseline. ICD was assessed by Mi

Screening for impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease and dopamine agonist use: a study of pharmacokinetic and psychological risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Dopamine agonist (DA) use is considered the main risk factor for impulse control disorder (ICD) development in Parkinson's disease (PD). Besides DAs, personality traits and cognitive features may represent risk factors for ICDs. The primary aim of this study was to investigate differences in DA plasma concentrations in PD patients with and without a positive screening for ICDs according to validated tools. The secondary aim was to compare the psychological profile between ICD positive and negative screened patients. METHODS: PD patients receiving chronic DA therapy were screened

Impulse control disorder related behaviours during long-term rotigotine treatment: a post hoc analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with impulse control disorders (ICDs) and other compulsive behaviours (together called ICD behaviours). The frequency of ICD behaviours reported as adverse events (AEs) in long-term studies of rotigotine transdermal patch in PD was evaluated. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of six open-label extension studies up to 6 years in duration. Analyses included patients treated with rotigotine for at least 6 months and administered the modified Minnesota Impulse Disorders Interview. ICD behaviours reported as A

[Intermittent Explosive Disorder: A Controversial Diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is aan externalizing externalising disorder characterized characterised by recurrent aggression episodes. Even though this disorder was described several decades ago, and it carries personal and social consequences, there is little in the medical scientific literature on this. bibliographic production about it is scanty. OBJECTIVE: To perform a conceptualization conceptualisation of this disorder, through the review and bibliometric analysis of the available scientific articles. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search was performed in databases with

Behavioral effects of levodopa.

In recent years, levodopa-induced behavioral changes have received increased attention in the medical literature and in clinical practice. The spectrum of these symptoms includes non-motor fluctuations with neuropsychiatric symptoms, compulsive behaviors such as punding, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and impulse control disorders, psychosis and hallucinations, as well as hypomania and mania. Despite knowledge of the clinical features associated with these behaviors, many of them are probably underdiagnosed. Although the mechanisms underlying behavioral symptoms are still incompletely unders

The Skin Picking Impact Scale: Factor structure, validity and development of a short version.

In the present study, we examined the psychometric properties of the Skin Picking Impact Scale (SPIS; Keuthen, Deckersbach, Wilhelm et al., 2001), a 10 item self-report questionnaire designed to assess the psychosocial impact of skin picking disorder (SPD). Participants were 650 individuals who met criteria for SPD in an online survey. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated a unitary factor structure with high internal consistency (α = 0.94). Consequently, we constructed an abbreviated 4-item version that retained good internal consistency (α = 0.87) and a robust factor stru

Is premature ejaculation an impulse control disorder?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is defined as persistent or recurrent ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation that occurs before the participant wishes to ejaculate and is associated with marked distress or interpersonal difficulty. Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are grouped as a heterogeneous cluster of disorders linked by a "failure to resist" impulses to engage in harmful, disturbing or distressing behaviours. I hypothesise that premature ejaculation is an impulse control disorder. ICDs share features with PE aspects of impaired control, rapid responses to stimuli and hypersensitivity. The

Episodic dyscontrol syndrome.

Episodic dyscontrol syndrome (EDS) or intermittent explosive disorder (IED) is a clearly identified category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV). It affects children and adults. Children are often considered to have epilepsy or a mental health problem. The episodes comprise of recurrent attacks of uncontrollable rage, usually after minimal provocation, and may last up to an hour. Following an episode, children are frequently exhausted, may sleep and will usually have no recall. These features often raise the possibility of epilepsy, and children may be referre

The family history method in disordered gambling research: a comparison of reports obtained from discordant twin pairs.

The purpose of this study was to examine potential biases in family history reports of problem gambling and gambling frequency. Same-sex twin pairs discordant for a history of problem (n = 230 pairs) and pathological gambling (n = 48 pairs) and for three indexes of gambling frequency (ever gambling, monthly gambling, and weekly gambling; n = 44-517 pairs) were identified from a large Australian national twin study. The problem gambling affected twin was significantly more likely to endorse paternal problem gambling than the problem gambling unaffected cotwin (OR = 5.5), and similar findings we

Response inhibition and impulsivity in schizophrenia.

Response inhibition in schizophrenia remains controversial, with behavioral correlates largely unknown. Inpatients with schizophrenia and controls completed a stop task and an impulsiveness questionnaire. Slower inhibitory processes were evident in schizophrenia, but there was no association with impulsivity. The nature of inhibition and impulsivity in schizophrenia is complex, and could reflect schizophrenia subgroups or disease states.
