Disseminated intravascular coagulation after cerastes vipera envenomation in a 3-year-old child: a case report.

This study presents a case of severe disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in a 3-year-old child following envenomation by the snake, Cerastes vipera. A literature search revealed very few similar cases. We describe a child who was bitten in his left foot by a snake identified as a C. vipera. Initial symptoms were relatively benign. Local signs included a hemorrhagic vesicle at the site of the bite with marked swelling of the entire leg. Twenty-four hours later, the child developed severe bleeding due to DIC, which lasted 5 days and required repeated administration of blood and blood pr…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation in a patient with metastatic prostate cancer: fatal outcome following strontium-89 therapy.

A patient with metastatic prostate cancer was found to have low-grade disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). He had significant bone pain despite external-beam radiotherapy and was given 89Sr with subsequent thrombocytopenia and epistaxis. The patient died from generalized hemorrhage 36 days postinjection. Although it is not possible to establish a causal relationship between the 89Sr and DIC, practitioners should be alert to complications associated with the primary disorder which might occur at a time to raise concern about the intervention.

[Cholestatic icterus and "shock liver" resulting from disseminated intravascular coagulation in newborns and babies (author's transl)].

The simultaneous occurrence of severe bacterial, especially urinary tract infections and cholostatic icterus in newborn and young infants, is a wellknown phenomenon. Since the pathogenetic principle is unknown, such types of icterus are described as "idiopathic", "septic" or "septic-toxic". However, in recent years an increasing number of pointers seems to indicate that cholostatic jaundice, being a polyaetiological syndrome, can be closely linked in respect of time and cause, with disseminated intra vascular coagulation. It would suggest itself to assume that pathogenetically speaking a sever

Delayed Rewarming Thrombocytopenia Not Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, is the Cause of Rewarming Deaths in Neonatal Cold Injury.

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was suspected of being the cause of fatal rewarming deaths in neonatal cold injury (NCI) in the absence of any other known explanation for this complication. It was associated with thrombocytopenia, bleeding, and abnormal clotting studies. Subsequently, this suspicion was questioned because of the reversibility of thrombocytopenia and more recently because of the delineation of a new entity DRT (delayed rewarming thrombocytopenia) that better explained the clinical and laboratory features of this condition. The sudden bleeding that occurs after 24 h…

An unusual case of Kippel-Trenaunay syndrome complicated with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and disseminated intravascular coagulation.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital vascular disorder characterized by capillary malformation, varicose veins, … gulopathy with markedly elevated D-dimer levels, superficial vein thrombosis, and clinical signs of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). With adjustment of anticoagulation and administration of fresh frozen plasma and fibrinogen, her coagulation profile gradually normalized. She was discharged on rivaroxaban and remained stable during follow-up. CONCLUSION: This case highlight …

Disseminated intravascular coagulation as a frequent and critical complication of thyroid storm: a single-center retrospective survey.

Thyroid storm (TS) is a rare but fatal endocrine emergency with high mortality, and there have been few detailed reports on its severity and … ulmonary support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or who finally died. Diagnostic criteria for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) were met in five patients (23%) who had significantly higher scores on the Burch-Wartofsky Point Scale as well as APACHE II and SOFA scores than the other patients. Thus, DIC is a frequent and critical complication of TS, which can lead to sev …

Persistent and Late-Onset Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation Are Closely Related to Poor Prognosis in Patients with Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Septic-associated disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is heterogeneous regarding prognosis and responsiveness to anticoagulant therapy. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between the timing of development and recovery of DIC, its prognosis, and the difference in response to anticoagulant therapy in sepsis-associated DIC patients. METHODS: This study was performed with a dataset from a multicenter nationwide retrospective cohort study (J-Septic DIC registry) in Japan between 2011 and 2013 to reveal the subgroup "high risk of death in DIC" and investigate the rela…

Effect of hypofibrinogenemia on obstetrical disseminated intravascular coagulation in Japan in 2018: a multicenter retrospective cohort study.

Japanese obstetrical hemorrhage recommendations state that not only pregnant women with an obstetrical disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) score ≥ 8 points but also those with fibrinogen levels ≤ 1.5 g/L have a high risk of maternal death and warrant blood transfusion. Our aim was to demonstrate the potential of fibrinogen levels ≤ 1.5 g/L as predictors of a Japanese obstetrical DIC score of ≥ 8. We included 595 participants with blood loss ≥ 1000 mL during vaginal delivery or ≥ 2000 mL during cesarean delivery. The frequency and volume of red blood cell (RBC), fresh-frozen plasma, pl…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation in acute lymphoblastic leukemia at presentation and in early phase of remission induction therapy.

A high frequency of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has been reported; however, its clinical relevance and characteristics have not been fully determined. We studied 67 adults with newly diagnosed ALL between 1982 and 1996 to clarify these questions. DIC was diagnosed in ten of 64 patients (16%) who underwent coagulation study at presentation and in 14 of 40 patients (35%) screened for DIC within 7 days after starting remission induction therapy. Overall, 24 of 67 patients (36%) had DIC during this period. Hemorrhagic symptoms were gener…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and rhabdomyolysis in fulminant varicella infection--case report and review of the literature.

Primary infection with varicella-zoster virus usually is a mild, self-limiting childhood illness. However, certain rare but potentially life-threatening complications can be associated with the disease. Adults and immunosuppressed patients are at increased risk for these events. We report a case of a patient on chronic immunosuppressants with fulminant varicella infection complicated by rhabdomyolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Mechanisms of muscle damage in viral diseases might be direct invasion of skeletal muscle and/or induction of harmful cytokines. Aggressive fluid thera…

An adult case of lymphangiomatosis of the mediastinum, pulmonary interstitium and retroperitoneum complicated by chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Pulmonary lymphangiomatosis is a rare clinical and pathological entity which is distinct from lymphangiomyomatosis and from pulmonary lympha … he disease. The patient's clinical course was remarkable for the concomitant development of chronic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Lymphangiomatosis involving both the mediastinum and pulmonary parenchyma is rare, and DIC is a very unusual complication of lymphangiomatosis.

Selective decontamination of the digestive tract contributes to the control of disseminated intravascular coagulation in severe liver impairment.

A premature neonate with severe Coxsackie B1 hepatitis acquired in utero developed disseminated intravascular coagulation a few days after birth. The neonate did not respond to conventional treatment. Eradication of aerobic gram-negative bacilli (Enterobacteriaceae) from the gut with oral nonabsorbable polymyxin E and tobramycin (selective decontamination of the digestive tract) was followed by clinical improvement; disseminated intravascular coagulation was controlled. After an unstable convalescence, the neonate recovered and was discharged in good general condition. A correlation between or…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation and the syndrome of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets in severe preeclampsia.

To clarify the role of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in women with the hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets (HELLP) syndrome, serial coagulation studies were performed prospectively in 18 patients. A semiquantitative DIC scoring system was used retrospectively to augment the diagnostic confidence of coagulopathy. At the time of admission to the hospital, three patients showed no evidence of DIC, eight had suspected DIC, and seven had manifest DIC. The intravascular coagulation process was progressive in all patients; upon delivery, eight patients proved to have s…
