We report the case of a 73-year-old lady who was seen with an infected sinus leaking from the wound of a recently inserted right total hip joint prosthesis. Plain radiographs revealed gas shadows in the region of the wound. An intra-operative sinogram showed the sinus to be coming from a pelvic diverticular abscess and the hip to be an innocent bystander. Our case emphasises the importance of having a clear preoperative plan with relevant investigations before a radical operative procedure is undertaken, to avoid unnecessary risk to a non-infected hip prosthesis.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. Jejunal diverticula is rare and in most cases without any symptoms. They become clinically relevant when complications, such as diverticulitis, malabsorption caused by bacterial overgrowth, intestinal hemorrhage, or obstruction, occur. INTRODUCTION: Improvements in antibiotic and intensive care treatment have facilitated the conservative therapy of patients suffering from complicated diverticulitis of the sigmoid for the time necessary for preparation in view of early elective resection of the sigmoid colon. Consequently, early elective resection of the sigmoid colon with primary anastomosis has become very popular as the treatment of choice in complicated diverticulitis. This has led us to a retrospective evaluation of our own results with both Hartmann's operation and resection with primary anastomosis.

BACKGROUND: The progression to acute diverticulitis from the relatively benign condition of colonic diverticulosis is not well characterized. A smaller subset may even develop complicated (perforated) diverticulitis resulting in sepsis and/or death.
