BACKGROUND: Donor-recipient size mismatch builds on the nephron dosing concept, but studies suggest unclear associations with kidney allograft outcomes.
METHODS: We systematically searched, critically appraised, and summarized associations between donor-recipient size mismatch and primary outcome of death-censored graft failure, secondary outcomes of kidney function, all-cause graft failure, and mortality. The study protocol was registered a priori on PROSPERO (ID CRD42023455394). We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Databases from 1946 to 2025 for studies evaluating adult kidney transpl

Ingestion of food- or waterborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria may lead to dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota often suffers from various disturbances. It is not clear whether and how disturbed microbiota may affect ARG mobility under antibiotic treatments. For proof of concept, in the presence or absence of streptomycin pre-treatment, mice were inoculated orally with a β-lactam-susceptible Salmonella enterica serovar Heidelberg clinical isolate (recipient) and a β-lactam resistant Escherichia coli O80:H26 isolate (donor) carrying a bla

Hepatitis G virus (HGV) is a recently discovered RNA virus, which belongs to the Flaviviridae family. Although HGV infection is usually not associated with elevated serum transaminases, some recent studies have reported that HGV infection is found in a significant number of patients with fulminant hepatitis and may play a role in its etiopathogenesis. In this study the prevalence of HGV infection was determined in 500 healthy blood donors and in 24 patients admitted to hospital because of acute liver failure caused by fulminant hepatitis. The presence of HGV RNA was tested in sera, obtained at

Reconstruction of critical-sized bone defects remains a tremendous challenge for surgeons worldwide. Despite the variety of surgical techniques, current clinical strategies for bone defect repair demonstrate significant limitations and drawbacks, including donor-site morbidity, poor anatomical match, insufficient bone volume, bone graft resorption, and rejection. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) has emerged as a novel approach to guided bone tissue regeneration. BTE focuses on in vitro manipulations with seed cells, growth factors and bioactive scaffolds using bioreactors. The successful clinical

The concept of "diastolic" heart failure grew out of the observation that many patients who have the symptoms and signs of heart failure had an apparently normal left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction. Thus it was assumed that since systolic function was "preserved" the problem must lie in diastole, although it is not clear by whom or when this assumption was made. Nevertheless, many guidelines followed on how to diagnose "diastolic" heart failure backed up by indicators of diastolic dysfunction derived from Doppler echoardiography. Diastolic heart failure is associated with a lower annual mo

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation is a well-established treatment for end-stage liver disease, but the shortage of donor organs and the risk of ischemia-reperfusion injury remain significant challenges. Machine perfusion, an emerging technology, offers a promising solution by dynamically preserving and even repairing donor livers through extracorporeal perfusion. Recent advances in understanding the molecular mechanisms of ischemia-reperfusion injury have further highlighted the potential of machine perfusion to enhance liver preservation and expand the pool of viable donor organs.

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2024eng
Liver transplantation is the only life-saving procedure for children with end-stage liver disease. The field is however heterogenic with various graft types, recipient age, weight, and underlying diseases. Despite recently improved overall outcomes and the expanded use of living donors, waiting list mortality remains unacceptable, particularly in small children and infants. Based on the known negative effects of elevated donor age, higher body mass index, and prolonged cold ischemia time, the number of available donors for pediatric recipients is limited. Machine perfusion has regained signifi

Post-corneal transplantation endothelial decompensation and subsequent bullous keratopathy often result in unfavorable clinical outcomes regardless of the treatment strategy employed. In this report, we present the outcomes of a patient managed with in vitro expanded human corneal endothelial cell (HCEC) transplantation facilitated by a nanocomposite gel (NC gel) sheet over 16 years. A 40-year-old male patient who presented with signs of graft failure after penetrating keratoplasty underwent HCEC transplantation. Additionally, HCECs were obtained from a deceased donor, cultured in vitro, and t

BACKGROUND: The Kidney Donor Risk Index (KDRI) by Rao et al. was developed to measure the quality of kidney allografts. While Rao's KDRI has been found to be a robust measure of kidney allograft survival for adult kidney transplant recipients, many studies have indicated the need to create a distinct pediatric KDRI.
METHODS: Our retrospective study utilized data from the United Network for Organ Sharing database. We examined 9295 deceased donor recipients' data for age < 18 years from 1990 to 2020. We performed a multivariate Cox regression to determine the significant recipient and transplan

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2014eng
The liver donor risk index (LDRI), originally developed in 2006 by Feng et al. and since modified, is a method of evaluating liver grafts from deceased donors through the determination of the relative risk of graft failure after transplantation. Online and paper surveys about attitudes and practices regarding decision making in liver transplantation and the role of the LDRI were sent to liver transplant physicians. One hundred forty-seven of 401 eligible respondents (37%) returned partial or complete surveys. The majority of the respondents were male (116/134 or 87%) and practiced in academic

OBJECTIVE: To report a novel surgical approach of transvaginal hybrid natural orifice transluminal surgery (NOTES) living donor nephrectomy. We conceptualized this approach by incorporating 2 existing concepts: laparoendoscopic single-site surgery and NOTES.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: After thorough consent and under institutional review board approval, a 61-year-old woman volunteered to donate her kidney through hybrid transvaginal NOTES. Under general anesthesia, she was placed in a modified right lateral decubitus position. A SILS port and an 8-mm trocar were placed through the same umbilical

The impact of JAK/STAT inhibitors, which are used in various inflammatory diseases, on cardiovascular risk is controversial and has recently raised safety concerns. Our study investigates the direct effects of tofacitinib on macrophage cholesterol metabolism, which is crucial for atherosclerosis plaque development and stability. Cultured human macrophages THP-1 were used to assess the impact of tofacitinib on cell cholesterol efflux and synthesis via radioisotopic methods, and on cholesterol uptake by measuring the cell cholesterol content with a fluorometric assay. The cholesterol acceptors a

Israel is the only country in the world that provides nearly unlimited, universal state funding for fertility treatments. This exceptional policy has been widely understood as symbolising the state's pronatalism. In this paper I probe the policy and assess medical experts' practice to show how a specific modality of pronatalism--enhancing 'the natural family' concept--is being construed through legislation and practice. Policy analysis discloses how the relatively efficient and safe technology of donor insemination has been devalued as a last resort solution to male infertility, to be applied

The basis for the extrathyroidal manifestations of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) and dermopathy are not well understood. We describe immunohistochemical studies on the skin of a patient with an extreme, elephantiasic form of Graves' dermopathy that developed after periods of prolonged standing with dependent edema. Excision of part of the lesion with subsequent skin grafting from a normal donor site resulted in recurrence of the disease at the original site as well as in development of disease at the donor site. A murine monoclonal antibody reacted with the thyrotropin receptor (TSHR) or a cross

PURPOSE: Follicular unit excision (FUE) surgery is becoming increasingly popular and the number of grafts transplanted in a single session is increasing. Furthermore, complicated surgeries and those requiring a longer surgical time such as non-shaven FUE and long hair FUE are more actively being performed worldwide. The main aim in FUE surgery is to obtain the best quality grafts while minimizing follicular damage during donor harvest. This article describes a novel FUE device that achieves these goals.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We describe a novel FUE device with Bluetooth function, fingertip to

Antibiotic resistant bacteria from faecal pollution sources are pervasive in aquatic environments. A facilitating role for the emergence of waterborne, multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens has been attributed to biofiltration but had not yet been substantiated. This study investigated the effect of filtration and gut passage in Daphnia spp. on conjugal transfer of resistance genes in Enterococcus faecalis. In vivo conjugation experiments involved a vancomycin-resistant donor strain bearing a plasmid-borne vanA resistance gene, and two vancomycin-susceptible and rifampicin-resistant recipie

Umut-Talha, a "sibling savior", was born on 26 January 2011 at Beclère Hospital after embryo selection at the Paris preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) center. His birth revived the controversy over "double PGD". This procedure, authorized in France since 2006, allows couples who already have a child with a serious, incurable genetic disease, to opt for PGD in order to select a healthy embryo that is HLA-matched to the affected sibling and who may thus serve as an ombilical cord blood donor. The procedure is particularly complex and the baby take-home rate is still very low. Double PGD is

A country, state or hospital may have the latest medical technology and infrastructure as well as qualified professionals for organ transplantation, but unless there is an adequate donor population the waiting lists for transplants will continue to be long and for some patients, hopeless. Public and professional awareness programmes are key factor in the donation process. Social education that explains the life-saving benefits of organ transplantation, the enormous need for organ donation, the concept of brain death and religious teachings related to these issues is vital for creating a conduc
