BACKGROUND: Viral envelope proteins have been proposed to play significant roles in the process of viral infection.
RESULTS: In this study, an envelope protein gene, gC (NCBI GenBank accession no. EU076811), was expressed and characterized from duck plague virus (DPV), a member of the family herpesviridae. The gene encodes a protein of 432 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 45 kDa. Sequence comparisons, multiple alignments and phylogenetic analysis showed that DPV gC has several features common to other identified herpesvirus gC, and was genetically close to the gallid herpervirus

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to identify the codon usage bias between the newly identified duck plague virus (DPV) UL35 gene (GenBank accession No. EF643558) and the UL35-like genes of 27 other reference herpesviruses.

An outbreak of duck virus enteritis (DVE) in mute swans (Cygnus olor) is described. Ninety-nine captive swans in a flock of 440 died within 3 months. The origin was obscure. The infection did not spread to other species on the same premises. Clinical signs included polydypsia, photophobia, inappetance, drooping wings, watery nasal discharge and yellowish diarrhoea. The goose parvovirus strain B was found to replicate only in cells with DNA synthesis. Cells in the stationary phase of DNA synthesis or maintained under 2 mM thymidine (TdR) in excess were refractive to the parvovirus infection. However, stationary phase cells could be rendered to produce progeny paroviruses by herpesvirus superinfection. In reverse, the replication of the herpesvirus was significantly inhibited by parvovirus preinfection of cells.

Carotid bodies of ducks show no detectable changes in ultrastructure up to periods of four weeks following the removal of 2-3 cm of the cervical vagus (decentralization). This indicates that the majority, and possibily all the nerves terminating on the glomus cells are afferent (sensory) in nature. These nerve endings are in reciprocal synaptic contact with the glomus cells and therefore have efferent and afferent functions. Theories concerning the carotid body receptor mechanism are discussed with particular reference to those theories which ascribe functions to the reciprocal synapses.
