Prevalence of High-Risk Genotypes of Human Papillomavirus: Women Diagnosed with Premalignant and Malignant Pap Smear Tests in Southern Ecuador.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the primary infectious agent for the development of cervical cancer, although the presence of the virus alone is insufficient for viral development and proliferation; this can be attributed to the increase in potential oncogenic risk, along with other risk factors. In the present investigation, the prevalence of high-risk HPV was determined from samples of premalignant or malignant cervical cytology in women from the southern region of Ecuador. The kit we used was able to detect genotypes 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, and 59. In addition, 64.5% of th…

Onchocercacidal effect of three drug regimens of amocarzine in 148 patients of two races and both sexes from Esmeraldas, Ecuador.

The objective of this multidisciplinary clinical investigation was to test whether amocarzine was absorbed effectively and safely in patients of two races and either sex infected with Onchocerca volvulus while living in the holoendemic area of Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador. The prerequisite for a systemic onchocercacidal effect is the regular absorption of orally administered amocarzine. Single dosing after overnight fasting proved to produce irregular absorption of amocarzine, although some microfilaricidal effect was achieved. A pilot study with repeated low dose and postprandial administrati…

Reemergence of DENV-3III_C.1 and emergence of DENV-3III_B.3.2 in Ecuador: multiple introductions and dispersal patterns, 2022-2026.

We characterized the reemergence of DENV-3III_C.1, the emergence of DENV-3III_B.3.2, and their phylogeographic spread in Ecuador during 2022-2026 through integrated epidemiologic and genomic surveillance. Lineage DENV-3III_C.1 formed a monophyletic Ecuadorian cluster closely related to Colombian viruses. The earliest sampled Ecuadorian sequence was detected in Esmeraldas, compatible with a possible introduction across the northern border followed by within-country dissemination. Lineage DENV-3III_B.3.2 comprised multiple Ecuadorian clades related to viruses from Colombia, Cuba, and the United …

Agricultural pesticide exposures in Ecuador and their spatial association with low birth weight: a combined cluster detection and Bayesian modelling approach.

Most evidence about the health consequences of pesticide exposures comes from occupational settings in high-income countries. However, larger populations can be exposed through agricultural drift, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Despite the growing and widespread use of pesticides, there is scarcity of studies assessing the national level effect of environmental exposures to pesticides. Ecuador has one of the highest application rates as the country is highly dependent on its export-bound agricultural industry. We applied spatial analyses to explore the distribution of l…

Isolation and Microbiological and Molecular Identification of Brucella abortus in Cattle and Pigs, Slaughtered in Cattle Sheds Located in Northern Sierra of Ecuador.

Brucellosis remains an underreported zoonotic disease in Ecuador. Its control program in cattle integrates diagnostic testing, vaccination, and eradication incentives, although participation is largely voluntary. Since 2025, vaccination has become compulsory nationwide. Human surveillance remains largely passive, and strain-level data are very limited. This study applied an integrated approach, combining serology (Rose Bengal and SAT-EDTA), microbiological culture, and molecular diagnostics, to assess the presence and diversity of Brucella spp. in cattle and pigs from six slaughterhouses in th…

Geographic Distribution of Human Infections with Zoonotic Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Anthropophilic Hookworms in Ecuador: A Retrospective Analysis of Archived Stool Samples.

Zoonotic human infections with Ancylostoma ceylanicum have recently been reported in the Americas. We used archived human stool samples to study the geographic distribution of human infections with A. ceylanicum and anthropophilic hookworms in different geoclimatic regions (coastal, Andean, and Amazon) of Ecuador. We analyzed retrospectively archived human stool samples from five studies previously screened for hookworm infection by microscopy, of which four included hookworm-positive samples only and one involved hookworm-negative samples to increase geographic distribution of sampling. Stool…

Drinking water quality in areas impacted by oil activities in Ecuador: Associated health risks and social perception of human exposure.

The unregulated oil exploitation in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon Region (NEAR), mainly from 1964 to the 90's, led to toxic compounds largely released into the environment. A large majority of people living in the Amazon region have no access to drinking water distribution systems and collects water from rain, wells or small streams. The concentrations of major ions, trace elements, PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) were analyzed in different water sources to evaluate the impacts of oil extraction and refining. Samples were taken from t…

Detection of Antibodies to Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae and Arboviral Coinfections in Febrile Individuals in 2014-2015 in Southern Coastal Ecuador.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a growing public health threat and are increasingly identified as the cause of undifferentiated febrile illness. There is a significant gap in our understanding of ticks and their associated pathogens in Ecuador. An arboviral surveillance study allowed us to explore potential exposure to TBDs in febrile subjects. We tested plasma samples from 222 febrile subjects for spotted fever group rickettsial (SFGR) antibodies from southern coastal Ecuador in 2014-2015 via ELISA. Fifty-five (25%) subjects had evidence of anti-SFRG IgG or IgM antibodies. Although attempts to…
