Educational approaches to enhance genomics competencies among health sciences students: A scoping review with implications for nursing education.

INTRODUCTION: Genomics is increasingly recognized as essential for precision health, yet its integration into undergraduate nursing and other health sciences curricula remains limited. Persistent gaps in genomics literacy and confidence among students and professionals indicate that current educational approaches may not adequately prepare graduates for genomics-informed care and precision health. The aim of this review is to map educational approaches and methods used to enhance genomic competencies among undergraduate health sciences students and discuss implications for nursing education.

Complete Dentures in Academia: Bridging Tradition and Innovation.

Over the years, educators have repeatedly questioned the relevance of complete denture education. The evolution of implants, shrinking curriculum time, and lack of patients have helped drive this sentiment. An aging population with complex medical needs and socioeconomic backgrounds are most likely to need removable complete dentures. Over the years, prosthodontic educators have come up with many creative and innovative solutions, including the treatment of standardized patients to overcome this multi-faceted challenge. Despite their efforts, dental students are graduating with low confidence

Nurses' experiences in transitioning to work in the long-term care and home and community care sectors: A phenomenological exploration.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in long-term care (LTC) and home and community care (HCC) are well acquainted with the high workloads and manifold job stressors that pervade these sectors, making it increasingly difficult to employ and retain a strong workforce. In response, nursing bridging education programs have been proposed to enhance recruitment and retention. While the efficacy of such programs is supported, the transition to practice experience of new nurse graduates is often associated with feelings of under-preparedness. Understanding the lived experience of nurses transitioning into new roles in

Volume and Variability of Foot and Ankle Case Exposure During Orthopaedic Residency: 2014-2019.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to a comprehensive breadth and volume of surgical cases is a fundamental component of orthopaedic education, though standardization of case exposures across residency programs is limited to a small amount of required case minimums. Significant variability in exposure to subspecialty cases, such as foot and ankle surgeries, can create distinctly different residency experiences. METHODS: Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) surgical case logs from 2014 to 2019 for leg/ankle and foot/toes were examined following the 2013 implementation of case minimum

A Leadership Pathway in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement for Trainees.

Training house staff in patient safety and quality improvement (PSQI) requires multidisciplinary collaboration between program directors, graduate medical education, and hospital safety and quality leadership. A heavy clinical workload and limited protected time hinder trainees from engaging in a meaningful PSQI experience during their years of post-graduate training. This is further exacerbated by the lack of subject experts who are available to mentor young physicians. For pulmonary and critical care trainees who are actively involved in the management and care coordination of high-acuity pa

New Nurse Graduate Readiness for Medication Administration Within the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Medication administration (MA) has significant implications for patient safety. This qualitative descriptive study, using semistructured interviews, explored the MA experiences of nine newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs) whose undergraduate studies were primarily undertaken during the pandemic. Two themes were identified: work readiness and transitioning. NGRNs felt that pandemic restrictions, including condensed content delivery and delayed clinical placements, led to curriculum concerns and impeded MA learning. NGRNs valued structured hospital graduate programs and the support received

The length of training pilot: does anyone really know what time it takes?

With funding from the American Board of Family Medicine, the Review Committee for Family Medicine of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has undertaken a project to examine the length of training for family medicine residents. This project comes at a time when concerns are being raised regarding how well family medicine residents are being prepared for independent practice, especially in view of the changing health care environment. The declining performance of recent graduates on the American Board of Family Medicine certification examination and reports of narrowing of t

Evaluating a specialty-specific objective structured clinical examination and workplace-based assessment curriculum for radiation oncology postgraduate training: a prospective educational intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Competence in radiation oncology is still commonly expected to emerge through apprenticeship, although essential tasks such as target delineation, treatment-plan review, and multidisciplinary reasoning are not reliably sampled by end-of-rotation examinations alone. METHODS: We conducted a single-center prospective educational intervention at a tertiary academic cancer center, using a historical-control comparison. 21 radiation oncology postgraduates completed the specialty-specific curriculum and were compared with 19 historical controls. The curriculum was built around 3 fixed di
