We describe a patient who developed upper respiratory tract symptoms following long-term treatment of Wilson's disease with penicillamine. These symptoms were attributed to areas of pharyngeal thickening and were treated with a laser. The retina can be regarded as an elastic membrane or sheet which stretches and deforms when a force is applied to it. Isolated bovine retina was taken and a graded traction force applied to determine retinal profile as a function of force. The resulting profile can be modelled mathematically and the model then used to determine a value for the elastic constant. The value of the elastic constant obtained by this method is approximately 2 N/m. Ocular and cutaneous stigmata are hallmarks of the heritable disorders of collagen and elastic tissue. Awareness of the oculocutaneous features is essential both to aid diagnosis and to direct management of affected patients. Elastosis associated with invasive ductal and lobular carcinomas of the breast was examined by tinctorial and immunohistochemical staining methods, enzyme digestion, and electron microscopy. From June 1984 to December 1985, 32 fractures of the tibia were treated by elastic nailing by the Ender method with functional plaster casts according to the Sarmiento method. We investigated a disorder of the dermal elastic component as the mechanism for the decreased elasticity of skin in myxedema. Using techniques of stereology, we estimated the relative volume of periductal elastic tissue in 60 infiltrating ductal carcinomas of the breast. Volume density of periductal elastic tissue in the neoplasm correlated with our own subjective histologic estimates of the amount of elastic tissue. Argentaffin carcinoma (carcinoid tumour) of the ileum has been found to be associated with ischaemic ileal necrosis due to elastic sclerosis of the mesenteric blood vessels.
