Electroacupuncture Upregulated Ghrelin in Rats with Functional Dyspepsia via AMPK/TSC2/Rheb-Mediated mTOR Inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal motility disorder is an important pathological basis for functional dyspepsia (FD). Epigastric ache and discomfort are the main symptoms of FD, and ghrelin deficiency is closely related to the occurrence and development of FD. While electroacupuncture (EA) alleviated the symptoms of FD patients and improved their quality of life, there is a lack of sufficient mechanistic evidence to support these beneficial effects. METHODS: An in vivo FD model was established in wild-type and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) knockout (-/-) rats. FD rats were subjected to EA w…

Involvement of adenosine A1 receptor in electroacupuncture-mediated inhibition of astrocyte activation during neuropathic pain.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition caused by damage or dysfunction of the central or peripheral nervous system. Electroacupuncture (EA) has an antinociceptive effect on neuropathic pain, which is partially due to inhibiting astrocyte activation in the spinal cord. METHODS: We found that an intrathecal injection of 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX), a selective adenosine A1 receptor antagonist, reversed the antinociceptive effects of EA in a chronic constriction injury-induced neuropathic pain model. RESULTS: The expression of GFAP in L4-L6 spinal cord was signif…

Effect of Electroacupuncture on Transcutaneous Oxygen Partial Pressure During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Healthy Individuals.

CONTEXT: The goal of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is to increase the oxygen (O₂) supply to the body significantly. Because of the toxic side effects and complications of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂), the environmental pressure and treatment time must be restricted. The research team hypothesized that other therapies administered during HBOT could safely improve the value of the arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO₂) during HBOT and improve its therapeutic effect. OBJECTIVE: The study intended to investigate whether electroacupuncture (EA) while receiving HBOT had a greater effect for healthy…

Cardiovascular beneficial effects of electroacupuncture at Neiguan (PC-6) acupoint in anesthetized open-chest dog.

Neiguan (PC-6) is a traditional acupoint in the bilateral forearms, overlying the median nerve trunk. Neiguan electroacupuncture (EA) has been believed to affect cardiovascular function and used in traditional Chinese medicine to improve or treat a wide range of health conditions and diseases, including angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, hypertension, and hypotension. However, few physiological studies have assessed the beneficial effects of Neiguan EA on the cardiovascular function. In the present study, we investigated its effects on the cardiovascular function in normal open-chest dogs…

Electroacupuncture Attenuates Neuroinflammation and Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction in Aged Rats by Suppressing the cGAS-STING Pathway.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a clinically significant complication in elderly patients, largely driven by surgery-induced neuroinflammation. The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway, a crucial regulator of innate immunity, has been implicated in neuroinflammatory activation. This study investigated whether electroacupuncture (EA) improves POCD by modulating this pathway in aged rats. Aged male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to sevoflurane anesthesia and splenectomy to establish a POCD model. Animals were divided into sham, POCD, POCD+…

Unveiling the impact of electroacupuncture on retinal cells in myopic guinea pigs via single-cell sequencing.

Myopia has become a major public health issue, and abnormal retinal tissue function is widely recognized as a key factor in its occurrence and development. Existing studies have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) intervention can significantly inhibit the progression of myopia, but the specific cellular mechanisms by which EA regulates retinal cell function remain unclear. In this study, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology was used to systematically explore the effects of EA on the functional characteristics of various retinal cells in myopic guinea pigs. The research methods are…

The role of electroacupuncture in altering lipoic acid metabolism to reduce joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis rats.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by severe synovial inflammation and progressive joint destruction. This study evaluated the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) in a rat model of RA and explored its potential association with lipoic acid (LA) metabolism. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was established in rats, followed by EA stimulation at ST36 (Zusanli) for 14 d. Hind-paw thickness and arthritis index scores were assessed weekly. On day 28, synovial histopathology was examined by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Serum cytokine levels were measured by ELISA. Synovial tissu…

Mechanism of Netrin-1 in electroacupuncture-mediated inhibition of nerve fiber ingrowth in degenerative intervertebral discs.

PURPOSE: Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is characterized by abnormal innervation and neurogenic inflammation, contributing to chronic discogenic pain. Electroacupuncture (EA) alleviates IVDD-related pain, yet its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate the role of the axonal guidance factor Netrin-1 in EA-mediated inhibition of myelinated nerve fiber ingrowth into degenerative intervertebral discs and to elucidate the downstream signaling pathways involved. METHODS: A rabbit axial compression IVDD model was established. Animals wer…

Electroacupuncture and P2X receptors: purinergic mechanisms in pain modulation : A narrative review with structured evidence mapping.

Acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA) are used for pain modulation, but the molecular events linking needling to analgesia remain incompletely defined. Purinergic signaling provides a biologically coherent framework because mechanical stimulation at acupoints releases extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which can activate P2X receptors and is subsequently metabolized into adenosine. Importantly, the receptor-level literature synthesized here is dominated by EA studies, whereas key local ATP-adenosine evidence derives from manual or traditional acupuncture. This review synthesizes evi…

Effects of electroacupuncture on perioperative neurocognitive impairment and gut-associated Th17/Treg balance in aged rats.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) occurs most frequently in elderly populations undergoing surgery and anesthesia. Evidence suggests that gut-initiated helper T (Th)17/regulatory T (Treg) cell immune responses are involved in the pathogenesis of neurocognitive disorders, and electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to be effective at regulating Th17/Treg cell balance and ameliorating cognitive dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate whether EA ameliorates PND via the regulation of gut-initiated Th17/Treg immune balance in a rat model. METHODS: Exploratory lap…
