Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex excitability abnormalities in Alzheimer's Dementia: Findings from transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography study.

There is some evidence of cortical hyper-excitability in Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) but its relationship with cognition is not clear. In this study, we assessed dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) excitability and its relationship with cognition in AD. Twenty-four participants with AD (mean [SD] age = 74.1 [7.2] years) and eleven elderly healthy controls (HC) (mean [SD] age = 68.8 [7.3] years) were recruited. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with electroencephalography (EEG) was used to assess cortical excitability. Cortical evoked activity (CEA) between 25 and 80 ms post-TMS…

Amplitude Integrated Electroencephalography Compared With Conventional Video EEG for Neonatal Seizure Detection: A Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

This diagnostic accuracy study compared the accuracy of seizure detection by amplitude-integrated electroencephalography with the criterion standard conventional video EEG in term and near-term infants at risk of seizures. Simultaneous recording of amplitude-integrated EEG (2-channel amplitude-integrated EEG with raw trace) and video EEG was done for 24 hours for each infant. Amplitude-integrated EEG was interpreted by a neonatologist; video EEG was interpreted by a neurologist independently. Thirty-five infants were included in the analysis. In the 7 infants with seizures on video EEG, there …

Early abnormal amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) is associated with adverse short-term outcome in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: In preterm infants with IVH the electrocortical background activity is affected and there is a correlation between the severity of cerebral injury to the degree of depression, however the usefulness of the early aEEG recordings has hardly been determined. AIM: To identify early aEEG features that could be used as prognostic markers for severe brain injury in prematures. METHODS: In 115 infants, 25-32 wk GA, aEEG recordings during the first 72 h of life were correlated with head ultrasound findings. Continuity (Co), sleep-wake cycling (Cy) and amplitude of the lower border (LB) of

Anticipatory biasing of visuospatial attention indexed by retinotopically specific alpha-band electroencephalography increases over occipital cortex.

Alpha-band (8-14 Hz) oscillatory EEG activity was examined with high-density scalp electrical recording during the cue-stimulus interval of an endogenous spatial cueing paradigm. In different blocks, cued spatial locations (left or right) were in either the upper or lower visual field, and attended stimuli were either oriented Ts or moving dots. Distractor stimuli were equally likely in the uncued hemifield. Sustained focal increases of alpha-band activity were seen over occipital cortex contralateral to the direction of the to-be-ignored location (ipsilateral to the cued direction of attentio

Predictive value of pharmaco-electroencephalography in early human-pharmacological evaluations of psychoactive drugs. First example: savoxepine.

The present paper forms the first part of a contribution to a comprehensive critical evaluation of the use of pharmaco-electroencephalography (pharmaco-EEG) as an instrument in the evaluation of pharmacodynamic effects of psychoactive drugs in man and further prediction of therapeutic effects by utilizing partial effects in a clinical pharmacological model situation. The basic principles and the methodological approaches are described first, prior to discussing the possibilities and limitations of the pharmaco-EEG in postulating hypotheses about therapeutic efficacy of psychoactive drugs in ma…

Relative entropy as a biomarker for vagus nerve stimulation response in epilepsy: Insights from intracerebral electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze differences in pre-implantation invasive electroencephalographic (IEEG) data between vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) responders (>50% seizure reduction) and VNS nonresponders (<50% seizure reduction). METHODS: We retrospectively identified 19 patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who underwent IEEG followed by VNS implantation instead of resective brain surgery. Resting-state IEEG recordings (30 min) were selected for all patients. Three biomarkers were analyzed in the IEEG data: (1) the number of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs), (2) the num

Alterations in electroencephalography signals in female fragile X syndrome mouse model on a C57BL/6J background.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS), the most common monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder, exhibits sex differences in prevalence and phenotypic severity. Electroencephalography provides translational insights into its pathophysiology, yet prior research focuses predominantly on males. In C57BL/6J mice, male Fmr1 knockout models show increased absolute gamma power across developmental stages, while female phenotypes, particularly in juveniles, remain uncharacterized. This study addresses this gap by comparing juvenile female Fmr1 knockout and wild-type mice. Frontal-parietal differential electroen…

Detection of Alzheimer and mild cognitive impairment patients by Poincare and Entropy methods based on electroencephalography signals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by deficits in cognition, behavior, and intellectual functioning, and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) refers to individuals whose cognitive impairment deviates from what is expected for their age but does not significantly interfere with daily activities. Because there is no treatment for AD, early prediction of AD can be helpful to reducing the progression of this disease. This study examines the Electroencephalography (EEG) signal of 3 distinct groups, including AD, MCI, and healthy individuals. Recognizing the non-stationary nature of EEG signals, t…

Healthcare impact of electroencephalography performed during clinical neurophysiology on-call duty in a third-level hospital.

INTRODUCTION: The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a useful tool in the diagnosis of pathologies such as non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) or brain death (BD), cardiac arrest (CA), and status epilepticus (SE) treatment monitoring. In addition, it provides irreplaceable information depending on the time it is performed, as is the case with the diagnosis of epilepsy after a first epileptic seizure (ES) or to differentiate these from non-epileptic paroxysmal events (NEPE). Its usefulness is maintained outside the usual working day, but it is not available in many centers. SUBJECTS AND METHOD

Effect of processed electroencephalography-guided anesthesia on postoperative delirium: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication following surgery, associated with extended hospital stays, cognitive decline, and increased mortality, yet effective pharmacological prevention remains elusive. Processed electroencephalography (p-EEG) guided general anesthesia is designed to reduce excessive neural suppression linked to POD development. However, conflicting evidence exists due to variations in devices and regional practices. METHODS: We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from database inception to J…

Prognostic Value of Electroencephalography in Critically Ill Adult Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

Prognostication after moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains challenging in the intensive care unit (ICU) despite the existence of well-validated online prognostication tools. Changes in brain activity related to TBI can be measured using electroencephalography (EEG), making it a potentially interesting diagnostic tool to refine prognostication. The primary objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the literature concerning the prognostic value of EEG among patients with TBI in the ICU. Five databases were searched from inception until August 13, 2024. The search ide…

Semiautomatic volumetry of the temporal lobes of the brain and correlation with electroencephalography results in dogs with assumed idiopathic epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Lesions causing refractory epilepsy, often associated with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), can be undetectable on standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in dogs. Automated brain volumetry, widely used in human medicine, can now be applied in veterinary medicine because of the availability of brain atlases. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop an automatic volumetry method, translate the outcomes into the assessment of temporal lobe volumes in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy, and correlate the results with the electroencephalography (EEG) data of epileptiform discharges (EDs). A…

Utilizing portable electroencephalography to screen for pathology of Alzheimer's disease: a methodological advancement in diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: The current biomarker-supported diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is hindered by invasiveness and cost issues. This study aimed to address these challenges by utilizing portable electroencephalography (EEG). We propose a novel, non-invasive, and cost-effective method for identifying AD, using a sample of patients with biomarker-verified AD, to facilitate early and accessible disease screening. METHODS: This study included 35 patients with biomarker-verified AD, confirmed via cerebrospinal fluid sampling, and 35 age- and sex-balanced healthy volunteers (HVs). All participants u…

Overt Word Reading and Visual Object Naming in Adults with Dyslexia: Electroencephalography Study in Transparent Orthography.

The study aimed to investigate overt reading and naming processes in adult people with dyslexia (PDs) in shallow (transparent) language orthography. The results of adult PDs are compared with adult healthy controls HCs. Comparisons are made in three phases: pre-lexical (150-260 ms), lexical (280-700 ms), and post-lexical stage of processing (750-1000 ms) time window. Twelve PDs and HCs performed overt reading and naming tasks under EEG recording. The word reading and naming task consisted of sparse neighborhoods with closed phonemic onset (words/objects sharing the same onset). For the analysi
