Diaphragm Muscle Surface Electromyography in Patients Submitted to Liver Transplant and Eligible for Extubation.

INTRODUCTION: Liver disease induces many organic and metabolic changes, leading to malnutrition and weight and muscular function loss. Surface electromyography is an easily applicable, noninvasive study, through which the magnitudes of the peaks on the charts depict voluntary muscle activity. AIM: To evaluate the diaphragmatic surface electromyography of postoperative liver transplantation subjects. METHODS: Subjects were patients who underwent liver transplantation and extubation in the Clinical Hospital of State University of Campinas. Electromyography data were collected with support pres…

Postviral Vagal Neuropathy: What Is the Role of Laryngeal Electromyography in Improving Diagnostic Accuracy?

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the convenience of laryngeal electromyography (EMG) findings in patients with chronic cough thought to be postviral vagal neuropathy (PVVN) with the clinical symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: We applied PVVN questionnaire and chronic cough quality of life (QoL) questionnaire, which is for determining the effect of chronic cough on the QoL, to 20 chronic cough applicants who has no explanatory cause in differential diagnosis. We also carried out videolaryngostroboscopy (VLS) and laryngeal needle EMG in these patients. RESULTS: The mean dura…

Evoked electromyography to rocuronium in orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius in facial nerve injury in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Muscles innervated by the facial nerve show different sensitivities to muscle relaxants than muscles innervated by somatic nerves, especially in the presence of facial nerve injury. We compared the evoked electromyography (EEMG) response of orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius in with and without a non-depolarizing muscle relaxant in a rabbit model of graded facial nerve injury. METHODS: Differences in EEMG response and inhibition by rocuronium were measured in the orbicularis oris and gastrocnemius muscles 7 to 42 d after different levels of facial nerve crush injuries in adult rab…

Stimulation electromyography as a method of intraoperative identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The iatrogenic injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery still represents a major problem because of the great physiologic and psychologic trauma to the patients. The incidence of this complication ranges between 1% and 15% depending on the thyroid pathology and type of surgery. AIM: To evaluate the potential of stimulation electromyography as a method of intraoperative prophylaxis of iatrogenic injuries of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Intraoperative monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve based on stimulation electromyography, w…

On-line quantitative analysis of surface electromyography of the pelvic floor in patients with faecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Needle electromyography (EMG) remains the 'gold standard' for the assessment of external anal sphincter innervation. It is, however, an invasive and poorly tolerated technique. In this study a quantitative form of surface electromyography was compared with needle EMG of the external anal sphincter. METHODS: Invasive needle EMG to assess mean fibre density and neuromuscular jitter was compared directly with quantitative surface EMG in 37 patients with faecal incontinence and 12 age-matched controls. RESULTS: There was a significant positive correlation between mean fibre density o…

[Presymptomatic injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in benign thyroid disease: contribution of electromyography].

Diagnosis of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy is usually possible through a clinical, laryngoscopical and electromyographical approach, but at a critical stage of the nerve injury. We observed four cases of benign thyroïd tumoral processes with a preoperative electromyographic examination showing neurogenic abnormalities in the thyroarytenoid muscle without any clinical symptoms. We presume that only laryngeal electromyography permits the diagnosis of mild, even asymptomatic laryngeal recurrent nerve injury. A recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy occurs in thyroid tumors, most often in malignant con…

Predictive value of laryngeal electromyography in patients with vocal cord paralysis of neurogenic origin.

Laryngeal electromyography can provide prognostic information when evaluating patients with vocal cord dysfunction. Twenty-four patients were studied to determine the predictive capacity of this test. Six patients had bilateral vocal cord paralysis, constituting a total of 30 vocal cords examined. Sixteen of these cords had decreased or absent motor unit potentials, fibrillations, or positive waves. None of these patients recovered function. Fourteen cords demonstrated either normal motor unit or polyphasic potentials. Return of mobility was evident in 11 of these cords. The combined total was…

[Electromyography of the cricoarytenoid muscle in the unsedated patient using the zoom-endoscope (author's transl)].

The EMG enables diagnosis, follow-up and prognosis of vocal cord palsy as well as indications for surgery. Using the zoom-endoscope of von Stuckrad electromyography of the larynx can be performed under topical anaesthesia. With a specially designed instrument the needle electrode can be transorally applied exactly into the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle and into any other muscle of the larynx. As the patient can follow instructions the voluntary muscle activity can be observed on the monitor and stored on tape during inspiration, exspiration and phonation. Replay and electronic summation are …

Electromyography in the estimation of nerve lesions after surgical and radiation therapy for breast cancer.

EMG was performed on the upper extremity of the affected side in 55 breast cancer patients who had undergone mastectomy and postoperative radiotherapy. Radical mastectomy caused six latissimus pareses out of 26 patients and seven deltoideus pareses out of 49 patients. Simple mastectomy caused no pareses. As an early complication of radiotherapy five out of 16 patients developed slight EMG changes, most often in the biceps brachii muscle, but no clinical pareses were observed. In the follow-up group (at least 5 years after primary treatment) 18 out of 25 patients had varying EMG alterations. Th

Measurement of intravesical and rectal pressures simultaneously with electromyography of anal sphincter in children with myelomeningocele.

This paper reports a technique for simultaneous measurement of intravesical pressure, intra-abdominal pressure, electromyographic activity of the external and sphincter and urinary flow. Using this technique during filling of the bladder and during micturition in 38 children with myelomeningocele and neurogenic bladder disturbance, it was possible to identify four main types of bladder dysfunction in these children. Once the type of bladder dysfunction is established for each child, adequate management can be planned far in advance of the detection of inherent upper urinary tract damage. This

Sex, age, and race representation in electromyography research: A cross-sectional methodological survey.

BACKGROUND: Surface electromyography (sEMG) is widely utilized in biomechanics and human-computer interaction. Modern sEMG systems rely on machine learning models , whose generalization heavily depends on physiological variations linked to sex, age, and ancestry, though these are often unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This survey critically appraises how demographic variables (sex, age, race) are reported in primary sEMG studies and quantifies cohort diversity at both aggregate and individual-study levels. METHODS: We analyzed a stratified random sample of 377 sEMG articles (January 2000-April 2026) f…

Multidimensional decomposition framework for electrocardiographic interference, noise and artifacts removal from diaphragmatic electromyography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate extraction of respiratory diaphragmatic electromyography (dEMG) is hindered by electrocardiographic (ECG) interference, motion artifacts, and noise. Existing methods, although effective, may remove physiologically relevant information. To enable robust ECG and artifact suppression while maintaining respiratory-related amplitude variations, a higher-order singular value decomposition (HO-SVD) based approach was developed. METHODS: The HO-SVD algorithm exploits the multidimensional structure of dEMG recordings by jointly decomposing the temporal, overlapped QR…

Surface Electromyography Monitoring of Muscle Changes in Male Basketball Players During Isotonic Training.

Physiological indicators are increasingly employed in sports training. However, studies on surface electromyography (sEMG) primarily focus on the analysis of isometric contraction. Research on sEMG related to isotonic contraction, which is more relevant to athletic performance, remains relatively limited. This paper examines the changes in the isotonic contraction performance of the male upper arm muscles resulting from long-term basketball training using the sEMG metrics. We recruited basketball physical education (B-PE) and non-PE majors to conduct a controlled isotonic contraction experimen…

Ultrasound Guidance to Augment Needle Electromyography Precision in the Complex Nerve Injury Setting.

The rise in popularity of nerve transfer surgery in individuals with peripheral nerve and spinal cord injuries has elevated the importance of the preoperative electrodiagnostic examination. Needle electromyography (EMG) provides peripheral nerve surgeons with precise information about donor and recipient muscle health, aiding in decisions regarding surgical options, donor muscle viability, and timing of intervention. However, traditional anatomical landmarks for typical donor and recipient nerve-muscle combinations in nerve transfer surgery are either not well described in the literature or be…
