Narcolepsy-cataplexy in a female dog.

Narcolepsy in human beings is a life-long illness afflicting 100,000–150,000 Americans. No current treatment for this neurological disorder is satisfactory and a definitive approach to the disease requires an animal model of narcolepsy. This report summarizes data on a female toy poodle which has a canine form of narcolepsy-cataplexy. At approximately 4 mo of age, the dog presented cataplectic attacks. Physical examination disclosed no systemic factors to account for such atonic episodes. Observation indicated that attacks were frequently partial, involving only the neck musculature and hind l

The relationship of nystagmus waveform on the VEP response in infantile nystagmus syndrome: a small case series.

PURPOSE: The relationship between eye movements and the visual evoked potential (VEP) response was examined in two subjects with infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS). Changes in VEP amplitude were compared between periods of foveation versus periods of high-frequency nystagmus. An analysis is proposed that improves extraction of the checkerboard reversal VEP signal from subjects with INS. METHODS: INS subjects were 2 healthy children (12-13 years old) with 20/40 or better corrected acuity. Optical coherence tomography confirmed the optic nerves, retina, and fovea were within normal variation. V

Physiology of midbrain head movement neurons in cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Early theories for cervical dystonia, as promoted by Hassler, emphasized the role of the midbrain interstitial nucleus of Cajal. Focus then shifted to the basal ganglia, and it was further supported with the success of deep brain stimulation. Contemporary theories suggested the role of the cerebellum, but even more recent hypotheses renewed interest in the midbrain. Although the pretectum was visited on several occasions, we still do not know about the physiology of midbrain neurons in cervical dystonia. METHODS: We analyzed the unique database of pretectal neurons collected in th

Real-Time "Eye-Writing" Recognition Using Electrooculogram.

Eye movements can be used as alternative inputs for human-computer interface (HCI) systems such as virtual or augmented reality systems as well as new communication ways for patients with locked-in syndrome. In this study, we developed a real-time electrooculogram (EOG)-based eye-writing recognition system, with which users can write predefined symbolic patterns with their volitional eye movements. For the "eye-writing" recognition, the proposed system first reconstructs the eye-written traces from EOG waveforms in real-time; then, the system recognizes the intended symbolic inputs with a reli

Monocular Versus Binocular Calibrations in Evaluating Fixation Disparity With a Video-Based Eye-Tracker.

When measuring fixation disparity (an oculomotor vergence error), the question arises as to whether a monocular or binocular calibration is more precise and physiologically more appropriate. In monocular calibrations, a single eye fixates on a calibration target that is taken as having been projected onto the center of the fovea; the corresponding vergence state represents the heterophoria (the resting vergence position), which has no effect on the calibration procedure. In binocular calibrations, a vergence error may be present and may affect the subsequent measurement of the fixation dispari

The impact of rumination on internal attention switching.

The present study explored the nature of attention control problems associated with ruminative traits. Experiment 1 aimed to establish the validity of a modified mental counting task that assesses individuals' ability to switch attention between internal mental representations. Reaction time and brain activity (event related potential; ERP) measures were examined, and results showed that the task was sensitive to internal attention switching effects. Experiment 2 assessed how the relationship between ruminative tendencies and switching performance differs when participants attend to neutral ve

Effect of episodic hypoxia on the susceptibility to hypocapnic central apnea during NREM sleep.

We hypothesized that episodic hypoxia (EH) leads to alterations in chemoreflex characteristics that might promote the development of central apnea in sleeping humans. We used nasal noninvasive positive pressure mechanical ventilation to induce hypocapnic central apnea in 11 healthy participants during stable nonrapid eye movement sleep before and after an exposure to EH, which consisted of fifteen 1-min episodes of isocapnic hypoxia (mean O(2) saturation/episode: 87.0 +/- 0.5%). The apneic threshold (AT) was defined as the absolute measured end-tidal PCO(2) (Pet(CO(2))) demarcating the central

EEG photic driving: right-hemisphere reactivity deficit in childhood autism. A pilot study.

In 14 autistic boys, aged 6-14 years, free of drug treatment, with relatively intact verbal functions and without severe or moderate mental retardation (I.Q. 91.4+/-22.8), intermittent photic stimulation at 11 fixed frequencies of 3-24 Hz revealed latent deficiency of the right hemisphere in the photic driving reactivity, predominantly at the fast alpha and beta frequencies of stimulation. The left-side prevalence was observed: 1) in the total number of driving peaks evaluated for the first four harmonics in the EEG spectra of 14 cortical areas and 2) in the driving amplitude in the spectra of

[Evaluation of direct occupational ocular trauma using electrophysiological techniques].

The most recent data from National Institute Insurance Work Accident (INAIL) confirm the high incidence of ocular injury as accident work. In this work the authors analyse the most common clinical form of occupational ocular trauma with the purpose to evaluate the use of electrophysiological tests in the diagnosis and in the follow up of these accidents. Authors admit the importance of more recent techniques as TC and MR in the diagnosis of these injuries; however, they conclude that electrophysiological tests can be considered as a first choice for the evaluation of the evolution and sequelae

Electrophysiological analysis of cognitive slowing in subjects with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathies (MEs) are multisystemic inherited disorders affecting tissues with high energy requirement such as the muscle, retina and central nervous system. Progressive external ophthalmoplegia and myopathy are the most common features in adults, and cognitive impairment is rare. In many neurodegenerative disorders, ERPs have been effectively performed to record cognitive slowing on tasks with different amount of information. To analyze the evidence for possible cognitive slowing, a standard auditory oddball paradigm with a button-press response was applied. Participants

Temporal relationship of generalized epileptiform discharges to spindle frequency activity in childhood absence epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis that the two main synchronizing mechanisms (spindle and delta oscillations) acting during non-rapid eye movement sleep show opposite relationship with the distribution of generalized epileptiform discharges (GEDs) during sleep was evaluated. METHODS: We studied the temporal relationship between the distribution of sleep GEDs and the dynamics of Sigma Activity (SA, 12-16 Hz) and Delta Activity (DA, 0.5-4.5 Hz) in 5 children affected by childhood absence epilepsy. RESULTS: Using correlation techniques, we found a high and positive correlation between GEDs and SA, whil

[Clinical relevance of periodic limb movements during sleep in obstructive sleep apnea patients].

INTRODUCTION: The periodic limb movements disorder (PLMD) is frequently associated with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), but the prevalence and clinical relevance of this association have not been studied in detail. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to make a prospective study on the prevalence of PLMD in patients with OSAS, and correlate this association with clinical and respiratory parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-two patients diagnosed with OSAS, without clinical suspicion of PLMD, underwent a polysomnographic study. Clinical symptoms and signs were evaluated with an stru

Auditory and visual event-related potentials in alcoholics: abnormalities of components and brain electrical field.

Alterations of ERPs recorded over midline scalp sites have frequently been reported in alcoholics. To assess the P3 and other ERP components topographically, auditory and visual ERPs were recorded from 33 scalp electrodes in abstinent alcoholics and healthy controls using an oddball paradigm. At the Cz electrode the alcoholics showed decreased visual N1 and increased auditory N2 amplitudes. Topographically, the negative centroids of the visual N1 and P3 and the auditory N2 differed between groups, and the positive centroid of the visual P3 was displaced toward the right hemisphere. While no va

A signal analysis method for impulse-like eye movements.

Eye movement investigations are performed in several fields of medicine. We have developed signal analysis methods of eye movements studied in otoneurology for several years. Previously, we have designed methods for eye movement types of saccades, nystagmus, smooth pursuit, and vestibulo-ocular reflex. In this paper we extend and develop further our method to concern also impulse-like eye movements, i.e. a new type of eye movement tests for investigations of vertiginous patients. According to our preliminary results the use of our method is efficient to differentiate patients with inner ear di
