Emotional Lability in MND: Relationship to cognition and psychopathology and impact on caregivers.

Emotional Lability (EL) is a well recognized symptom of cortico-bulbar pathway dysfunction in Motor Neuron Disease/Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (MND/ALS), and is reported to occur in 19-49% of patients. The Emotional Lability Questionnaire (ELQ), is specifically designed to detect EL as reported by MND patients and as observed by their carers. The aims of this study were to 1) validate the Italian version of the ELQ; 2) investigate the relationship between EL and presence of cognitive dysfunction; 3) investigate the relationship between EL and presence of psychopathology. Forty one MND patien

Self-compassion modulates autonomic and psychological responses to stress among adults with generalized anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: Self-compassion is associated with emotional well-being, yet its benefits in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) patients remain unclear. This study investigated the impact of self-compassion on emotional and physiological stress responses in individuals diagnosed with GAD. METHODS: Seventy-seven GAD patients were categorized into high (n = 39) and low (n = 38) self-compassion groups using the Self-Compassion Scale. Electrocardiograms were recorded during a stress-inducing task, in which negative feedback was provided on personal intelligence and career development. Participants re

Emotional Abilities in Children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Impairments in Perspective-Taking and Understanding Mixed Emotions are Associated with High Callous-Unemotional Traits.

Most studies of emotion abilities in disruptive children focus on emotion expression recognition. This study compared 74 children aged 4-8 years with ODD to 45 comparison children (33 healthy; 12 with an anxiety disorder) on behaviourally assessed measures of emotion perception, emotion perspective-taking, knowledge of emotions causes and understanding ambivalent emotions and on parent-reported cognitive and affective empathy. Adjusting for child's sex, age and expressive language ODD children showed a paucity in attributing causes to emotions but no other deficits relative to the comparison g

Maintenance of parasympathetic inhibition following emotional induction in patients with restrictive type anorexia nervosa.

This study aimed to explore changes in heart rate variability (HRV), a proxy for parasympathetic activity characterizing emotion regulation processes before, during and after negative emotional induction in patients suffering from restrictive type anorexia nervosa (AN-RT). We compared two methods of HRV analysis, the Fast Fourier Transform high frequency (FFT-HF) and a specific HRV high frequency analysis technique, namely, the wavelet transform HRV (WT-HRV). A sample of 16 inpatients with AN-RT was compared to 24 control participants. Heart rate (HR) was continuously recorded for 5 min before

Salutogenesis, globalization, and communication.

Achieving successful communication in transcultural contexts means integrating emotional communication patterns into a global context. Professional, rational communication is characteristic of the cultural dimension, and emotions are characteristic of the direct, interpersonal dimension of human existence. Humans strive to achieve coherence in all dimensions of their lives; this goal is in the end the most essential aspect of psychophysical self-regulation. A major role in integrating emotional needs and cultural features in global coherence is played by the attractor 'global affinity'. The tr

Integrating soft skills into perfusion education: a necessity for modern clinical practice.

Soft, non-technical competencies are important in perfusion practice but are often inconsistently taught. Key domains include communication, teamwork, leadership, adaptability, emotional intelligence, conflict management, professionalism, and cultural awareness. Suggested methods are interprofessional simulation, structured debriefing with feedback, short courses on communication and conflict resolution, mentored rotations with behavioral checklists, and recognition of progress through competency milestones and continuing professional development. Clear learning objectives and simple, validate…

From digital companionship to capability building: reframing conversational artificial intelligence and older adults' psychological wellbeing in active aging.

The rapid diffusion of conversational artificial intelligence (AI) has reshaped the landscape of digital interaction in later life, with growing attention to its implications for older adults' mental health and wellbeing. Existing research has predominantly interpreted conversational AI through the lens of digital companionship, emphasizing its capacity to simulate social presence, reduce loneliness, and provide emotional support. While this perspective captures important affective outcomes, it offers a limited account of the developmental processes through which AI engagement may influence ps

Effects of short-term Huatou Chan training on health.

Previous studies have shown that perennial Chan training leads to improvements in brain functioning. However, few studies have investigated the effects of short-term Huatou Chan training. The current study explored the effects of a three-day Huatou Chan training on physical and emotional health, as well as brain state. Seventy healthy subjects were recruited and divided into two groups: the Huatou Chan group and the Control group. The Huatou Chan group received a 3-day Huatou Chan training, while the Control group waited for three days. Both groups completed a 6 min Brain State Index recording

Chatbot relational dependence and psychosis risk: Conversational artificial intelligence as a potential behavioral addiction context.

Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for emotional support, companionship, and psychological reflection. Their capacity to simulate attentiveness, empathy, and conversational continuity may shift technology use from instrumental interaction toward relational engagement. Emerging clinical observations suggest that intensive chatbot use may, in vulnerable individuals, contribute to psychiatric destabilization, including reinforcement of maladaptive beliefs and, in rare cases, psychotic symptoms. This viewpoint proposes that conversational AI engagement can b

Possible rheumatoid arthritis subtypes in terms of rheumatoid factor, depression, diagnostic delay and emotional expression: an exploratory case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in the pathology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), particularly as vulnerable personality types are exposed to chronic stress. Emotions are powerful modulators of stress responses. However, little is known about whether patients with RA process emotions differently to matched controls. In this study we: 1) assessed whether the trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) scores of patients with RA differ from healthy controls at the facet level; 2) explored any subgroups in RA, in terms of trait EI and comm…
