Self-compassion, mental health, and emotion regulation in adults with temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: People with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are at increased risk of mental health difficulties, most commonly anxiety and depression. Self-compassion, comprised of self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness, has been associated with better mental health in wider epilepsy populations. Previous research also suggests that self-compassion may be protective by fostering better emotion regulation. However, this has not been studied in TLE. AIMS: To (1) compare adults with TLE, other types of epilepsy (non-TLE), and without epilepsy (non-epilepsy) on measures of self-compassion, anxi

Emotion Regulation, Coping, and Alexithymia in Adolescents With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Mediational Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition that impacts daily functioning. In addition to classical symptoms, emotion regulation (ER), alexithymia and maladaptive coping are thought to be involved in the symptomology and maintenance of the disorder. This study aims to investigate the relationship between ER, alexithymia and coping in adolescents with a sole diagnosis of OCD. METHODS: The study comprised of 93 participants with OCD and 92 healthy controls. Patients with any psychiatric disorder other than OCD were set as exclusion criteria. A soci

Psychometric Evaluation of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale in Sexual and Gender Minority Parents.

Emotion regulation (ER) in parenting is crucial for parental well-being and children's mental health. However, ER in parenting is often studied as a general construct, overlooking the unique challenges of caregiving, particularly for sexual and gender minority (SGM) parents. This study examines the psychometric properties of the Regulating Emotions in Parenting Scale (REPS) in parents across SGM status. Specifically, we leverage cross-sectional survey data from two national samples of ethno-racially diverse parents (n = 1,958, 32.3% sexual minority, 11.2% gender minority) to evaluate measureme

Investigative Approaches to Resilient Emotion Regulation Neurodevelopment in a South African Birth Cohort.

Understanding the neurobiology of resilient emotion regulation following adversities is critical for addressing mental health problems globally. However, the functional neurobiology of resilience has rarely been studied in low- and middle-income countries, which comprise 90% of the world's population and experience more consistent adversities. Here, we describe how we are investigating the neurodevelopment of resilient emotion regulation in adolescents (anticipated N = 525) from a South African birth cohort recruited from a low-income, high-adversity township. Across 2 longitudinal time points

Neurophysiological evidence for emotion regulation abnormalities in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis.

Past studies indicate that individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR) display emotion regulation abnormalities that predict increased symptom severity and poor functional outcome. However, it is unclear which neurophysiological processes contribute to impairments in implementing various strategies to down-regulate negative emotion. The current study used electroencephalography (EEG) to determine whether individuals at CHR have difficulty implementing reappraisal and distraction. Participants included individuals at CHR (n = 25) and healthy controls (CN: n = 36) who completed an EEG

Regulation of PVT-CeA Circuit in Deoxynivalenol-Induced Anorexia and Aversive-Like Emotions.

Neuronal plasticity in the central amygdala (CeA) is essential for modulating feeding behaviors and emotional responses, potentially influencing reactions to Deoxynivalenol (DON). Acute oral administration of DON elicits a dose-responsive reduction in food intake, accompanied by pronounced alterations in locomotor activity and feeding frequency. This study investigates circuitry adaptations that mediate DON's effects on feeding, by targeting of GABA neurons in the CeA. Following exposure to DON, an increase in connectivity between the paraventricular nucleus of the thalamus (PVT) and CeAGABA n

Rap1a regulates CUMS-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive dysfunction and emotional abnormalities in mice.

Rap1a is a member of the Ras family of proteins and first came into view as an immune modulator of cells, playing roles in both innate and adaptive immunity. It is widely distributed in various tissue cells and is closely related to multiple biological functions of cells, including immunity, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and angiogenesis. Homocysteine (HCY) is a sulfur-containing non-essential amino acid that does not participate in protein synthesis. It is mainly converted from exogenously ingested methionine into cysteine through a series of metabolic reactions. Recent studies ha

Emotion regulation skills as a mediator of STEM teachers' stress, well-being, and burnout.

The teaching profession highly stressful, and teachers are often faced with challenging situations. This is particularly the case in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, which is a uniquely demanding and challenging field. This study examined the role of emotional regulation (ER) skills in STEM teachers' stress, well-being, and burnout. The sample included 165 STEM teachers in middle and high schools who completed standard online questionnaires on ER, stress, well-being, and burnout. They were also asked to comment on three videos depicting authentic mathematical and pe…

The multifaceted role of emotion regulation in suicidality: Systematic reviews and meta-analytic evidence.

Despite the number of empirical contributions on the topic, scientists have offered contrasting perspectives on the role of adaptive versus maladaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies in suicidality. Moreover, suicidal attempts and suicidal ideation are likely to be differentially related to single ER strategies. To provide more systematic knowledge that can be used to draw sound conclusions and formulate clinical indications, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis that we reported in compliance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) s

Reduced frontocingulate theta connectivity during emotion regulation in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reappraisal is an essential emotion regulation skill for social life and psychological health. However, individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) cannot use this skill effectively. Successful cognitive reappraisal in healthy controls (HC) has been shown to be associated with theta activity in a frontal and subcortical network. In the present study, we investigated whether MDD patients are characterized by altered theta power and connectivity pattern during cognitive reappraisal compared to HC. METHODS: Using EEG and eLORETA, we examined both theta activity and con

The Role of Psychopathology and Emotion Regulation in the Intergenerational Transmission of Childhood Abuse: A Family Study.

Previous studies have shown that parents with a history of childhood abuse are at increased risk of perpetrating child abuse. To break the cycle of childhood abuse we need to better understand the mechanisms that play a role. In a cross-sectional extended family design including three generations (N = 250, 59% female), we examined the possible mediating role of parental psychopathology and emotion regulation in the association between a history of childhood abuse and perpetrating child abuse. Parents' own history of childhood abuse was associated with perpetrating abuse toward their children,

Associations between parental psychopathology and youth functional emotion regulation brain networks.

Parental mental health is associated with children's emotion regulation (ER) and risk for psychopathology. The relationship between parental psychopathology and children's functional ER networks and whether connectivity patterns mediate the relationship between parent and youth psychopathology remains unexplored. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 4202, mean age = 10.0) and a multilevel approach, we analyzed the relationship between self-reported parental psychopathology and their offsprings' connectivity of

The Emotion Regulation of Acupuncture in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Clinical Neuroimaging Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Acupuncture is effective for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), which can relieve pain intensity and regulate negative emotional states such as pain-related anxiety and depression. Previous studies mainly discuss the analgesic mechanism of acupuncture treatment of CLBP, but there are multiple dimensions to pain, including sensation, emotion and cognition. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the central mechanism of acupuncture for CLBP from the perspective of emotional regulation by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 72 …

The Emotion Regulation Mechanism in Neurotic Individuals: The Potential Role of Mindfulness and Cognitive Bias.

Neuroticism is a personality trait that impacts daily life and raises the risk of mental problems and physical illnesses. To understand the emotion regulation mechanism of neurotic individuals, we developed two complementary studies to examine the effects of mindfulness and negative cognitive bias. In Study 1, four scales (EPQ-RSC, FFMQ, CERQ, NCPBQ) were used for assessment. Correlation analysis and structural comparison showed that: (1) the level of neuroticism was positively correlated with negative emotion regulation; (2) negative cognitive bias mediated the relationship between neuroticis

Childhood Trauma and PTSD Symptoms: Disentangling the Roles of Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance.

Research documents that a history of childhood trauma increases risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), greater emotion regulation difficulties (ERD), and reduced distress tolerance (DT). Independent lines of research implicate ERD and DT as transdiagnostic risk factors and link them to PTSD. To elucidate how such mechanisms may influence the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of PTSD, the current study investigates the distinct mediating roles of emotion regulation and DT, exploring which explains a larger indirect effect from childhood trauma to PTSD symptom severity. The Inter-Relationship of Emotion Regulation, Self-Compassion, and Mental Health in Autistic Adults.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation is one of the key factors that influence mental health outcomes in autistic and nonautistic populations. Recent research has also identified self-compassion as a negative correlate of depression and positive correlate of psychological well-being in autistic adults. Empirical evidence from the general population supports the notion that being kind and compassionate toward oneself during stressful and difficult moments can help with one's ability to regulate negative emotions, which then has flow-on effects on mental health outcomes. However, the inter-relationship

Morality in middle childhood: the role of callous-unemotional traits and emotion regulation skills.

BACKGROUND: The development of morality is vital for fostering prosocial behavior and enhancing both individual and societal well-being. Clarifying what contextual and individual factors play a role in moral processes during childhood can contribute to our understanding of the development of morality. Given the previous acknowledgment of importance, yet lack of existing empirical findings, the study focused on the significance of callous-unemotional traits (i.e., an affective-interpersonal personality trait, related to psychopathy in adulthood) and emotion regulation (i.e., an essential part o
