OBJECTIVES: Our aim in this study was to characterize the morphology of the endolymphatic compartment on histopathology in individuals with Ménière's disease (MD) and to determine why hydrops of the saccule is more pronounced than that of other compartments of the inner ear in MD.

A new method has been developed to measure the cross-sectional area (CSA) of scala media in the living cochlea. We assessed 53 patients with acute low-tone sensorineural deafness (LTSD) over the past 10 years using the transtympanic-electrode technique of electrocochleography. INTRODUCTION: Endolymphatic hydrops, the histopathological substrate of Ménière's disease, is an almost universal finding in postmortem studies of patients with this disease. The nature of surgical treatment for Ménière's disease has evolved from destructive to conservative in the interest of preserving hearing. We have performed a combined procedure that involves a vestibular neurectomy to control vertigo, which is followed by an endolymphatic sac shunt to control hydrops in 26 patients.
