The results are reported of an epidemiological study carried out in the province of Treviso in north-east Italy. The research was designed to ascertain the sensitization, through an IgE mechanism, to the main allergens present on cattle farms. Also reported are the results of a mite survey undertaken in ten barns in the same region. Investigations revealed a significantly larger degree of sensitization to storage mites among cattle farmers than in the control subjects. This sensitization was well correlated with mite species to be found in cattle barns. However, the frequent co-sensitization t

Identifying the susceptible period when environmental factors affect disease risk is essential for understanding disease etiology. Most existing epidemiologic studies use oversimplified summaries of time-dependent exposures such as baseline or most current exposure, or the cumulative average of exposure over available follow-up periods. In this paper, we introduce a damped exponential weighting model for estimating optimal exposure weights for different time intervals. This model can accommodate flexible patterns of weights and can be fit using standard software. We applied the model to assess

The BELLA study on mental health and well-being in children and adolescents is the mental health module of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS). The cross-sectional KiGGS survey collected comprehensive data on the health status of 17,641 children and adolescents, aged 0-17 years, living in Germany. The survey included physical examinations and tests, questionnaires filled in by parents and equivalent questionnaires for children aged 11 years or older. A computer-assisted personal interview was conducted by study physicians, and various laborat

This paper describes a rapid assessment of the drug-injecting situation in Viet Nam. The study, which was carried out over a five-week period during October and November 1993, focused on the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. A multi-indicator inductive methodology was adopted that mixed qualitative and quantitative measures. As only limited background epidemiologic and official statistics were available, the study involved the generation of original data, through, for example, the construction of "cognitive maps" describing broad patterns of drug use, semi-structured interviews (for the co

For ten years, " evidence-based medicine " gradually invaded all the medical field : clinical practice but also research and teaching. More than being just a new paradigm, it constitutes one of the pillars of good medical practice beside experimentation, ethics and the requests of the patient. It gathers collective quantitative aspects (statistics, public health, epidemiology, biomedical research) applied to the individual reality of each patient in search of care. One of the methods used in " evidence-based medicine " is critical reading : in-depth analysis of the published trials in medical

In 1965, an innovative concept in field medicine was launched in the form of a team of highly-trained, multi-disciplined AM-EDD specialists who were assigned to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and attached to the 5th Special Forces Group (Abn) while in Vietnam. Officially designated the U.S. Army Special Forces--Walter Reed Army Institute of Research Field Epidemiologic Survey Team (Airborne) (WRAIR-FEST), these personnel took their investigative skills into some of the more remote areas of Vietnam to study disease transmission in militarily hostile circumstances. From 1966-1968, nu

Although they have a long history of use, standardized or structured interviews for the gathering of clinical data in psychiatry have become increasingly popular in the last 10 years. Some definitions of structured interviews and a brief historical review of their use are presented. In addition to enhancing the reliability of symptoms and diagnoses in research, there is evidence that structured interviews improve the comprehensiveness of the data base, and reduce examiner bias. Even in the routine clinical setting, completeness of data collection and accuracy of diagnosis would appear to outwe

Matched case-control studies are commonly employed in epidemiological research for their convenience and efficiency. Analysis of secondary outcomes can yield valuable insights into biological pathways and help identify genetic variants of importance. Naive analysis using standard statistical methods, such as least-squares regression for quantitative traits, can be misleading because they fail to account for unequal sampling induced by the case-control design and matching. In this paper, we propose novel statistical methods that appropriately reflect the study design and sampling scheme in the

Because of its high fatality rate and our inability to detect esophageal disease early in its development, esophageal cancer represents a significant medical and public health challenge. The mortality statistics underline the importance of focusing on prevention of these conditions as a matter of state and national public health priority. Unfortunately, the measures needed for primary prevention of these conditions do not seem as clear-cut for populations at highest risk of this disease (i.e., AAs) as for the populations represented in most epidemiologic studies. Our incomplete knowledge about

During the last 5 years, a worldwide resurgence of tuberculosis has been convincingly documented. Increased numbers of cases have been reported from several industrialized countries and there has been a veritable explosion of tuberculosis in the developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa. The fact that most of this increase is attributable to coexisting infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) should come as no surprise, because of the role played by cell-mediated immunity in protecting against tuberculosis and the depletion of this immunity by HIV infection. UNLABELLED: Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and AD-related dementias (AD/ADRD), pose significant challenges to health care systems globally, particularly in Africa. With the advances in medical technology and research capabilities, especially in next-generation sequencing and imaging, vast amounts of data have been generated from AD/ADRD research. Given that the greatest increase in AD/ADRD prevalence is expected to occur in Africa, it is critical to establish comprehensive bioinformatics training programs to help African scientists leverage existing data and collect

Six papers based on studies with particular epidemiological designs are presented here which have been selected on the basis of their visibility in the literature. The designs are intended to provide robust evidence on risk, natural history, and underpinning neurobiology and outcomes relevant to aging populations. There is a large case control study (the Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease study), a case cohort study of Parkinson's Disease (the CamPaIGN study), and the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Study. Each study has included genetic investigation and risk, and the latte

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sleep disturbances are increasing in prevalence in North America. There is growing evidence that poor sleep quality and short sleep duration may adversely affect circadian rhythms, which in turn may affect female reproduction. The objective of this review is to evaluate recent literature on the association between sleep disturbances and female reproduction.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is accumulating evidence that sleep quality and duration are important for female reproduction, but epidemiologic research is limited. Recent studies provide suggestive evidence that sleep disorder

Homocysteine is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, and the level of homocysteine in plasma is known to be strongly influenced by genetic factors-not only rare variants, but also common polymorphisms. This report describes a comprehensive postgenomic strategy for elucidating useful genetic information about homocysteine metabolism. The standard method for gathering such information is the candidate gene approach, which is an effective method based on known biological information. After collecting evidence from independent research projects, a critical epidemiological review permits a determinat

Racial disparities in the prevalence of periodontal disease are consistent and persistent. The epidemiology of periodontal disease demonstrates racial inequities: non-Hispanic Black (14.7%), Mexican American (13.4%), and other Hispanic adults (7.8%) experience a higher prevalence of severe periodontal disease than non-Hispanic White adults (5.9%). Epidemiologic and clinical research on periodontal health suffers from the same problem that has plagued the health equity movement, an over emphasis on describing racial inequities coupled with few interventions that reduce racial health inequity. Cluster headache (CH) is a rare and painful primary headache disorder characterized by severe unilateral pain and cranial autonomic symptoms. This perspective examines the epidemiological evidence supporting the classification of chronic cluster headache (CCH) as a rare disease, noting a prevalence of CH of approximately 124 per 100,000 individuals, with only 3.5-13.7% manifesting CCH. This prevalence meets criteria established by both the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency for rare disease designation. The rarity of CCH creates substantial clinical and research chal

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) disproportionately affects low-income and middle-income countries. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have been less represented in scientific literature. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, burden and implemented screening and prevention strategies of RHD in LAC.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and SciELO from 1990 to April 2021. Observational and experimental studies that described data on the epidemiology, burden, or prevention/screening strategies of RHD, regardless of age or language, were included. The risk of b

Maternal immunization for prevention of morbidity and mortality of pregnant women and their neonates due to infectious diseases is ongoing worldwide. The complexity of vaccine research and development in this population is challenging. Not only do vaccines for pregnant women require evidence of immunogenicity, potency, stability, and limited reactogenicity, they must also provide efficacy in decreasing morbidity for the pregnant woman, her fetus, and the neonate, demonstrate safety or lack of evidence of harm, and offer benefit or potential benefit of vaccination during pregnancy. Since the 19
