A 9-year survey of neural tube defects in Newfoundland showed (1) evidence for secular variation, with a peak in 1980, but no general downward trend as seen in some other populations; (2) significant geographic variation which did not correlate with hardness or nitrate content of the lake water; (3) a tendency for the proportion of females among anencephalic births to increase with increasing frequency of anencephaly among geographic regions. This supports previous evidence for a female-specific contribution to the causes of increased liability to neural tube defect.

An epidemiological inquiry in Italy led to the collection of 207 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) with onset during the decade 1972-1981, with a mean incidence rate of 0.37 cases per year per million total population (CYMTP) and 1.24 cases per year per million young population aged 0-19 years (CYMYP). Retrospective study was carried out on the incidence of Trichomoniasis vaginalis infection in Nigeria. Data were obtained from two main hospitals in Ibadan (Adeoyo State Hospital and the University Teaching Hospital) and compared the data were classified and analysed statistically using the chi-square test. The study showed a high yearly incidence of I. vaginalis infection in Nigeria and in particular with people of low socio-economic status. The incidence was also higher in females than males.

To estimate the incidence rate of listeriosis in France during one year, a census of all the isolates of Listeria monocytogenes was made in 1984 by the microbiologists of 78% of the French hospitals. 630 cases of listeriosis were registered giving a yearly incidence rate of 11.3 cases for 1 million inhabitants. 353 cases (56%) were perinatal listeriosis (positive cultures for L. monocytogenes from the mother, the child or the placenta). In 1982, the number of deaths from hematopoietic neoplasms was 5,885 for males and 4,237 for females, which corresponded to about 6% of all malignant neoplasms. Few epidemiologic studies have been undertaken to investigate the etiology of cancer of the vulva. To identify risk factors associated with this cancer, a case-control study was conducted in 149 patients with histologically proven vulvar carcinoma and the same number of control patients matched for age, race, marital status, and hospital from five U.S. metropolitan areas. It is difficult to study subacute thyroiditis epidemiologically since it occurs sporadically and infrequently. Information about 1,127 cases (108 males, 1,019 females, from 1967 to 1982) of subacute thyroiditis in northern Japan was obtained through a questionnaire. A total of 1097 people in two communities in Chiapas, Mexico, were examined for trachoma, and information was obtained about personal and family hygiene. An analysis of hydatidiform moles occurring in Hawaii over a 14-year period (1968-1981) was undertaken. The pathology of all 278 reported molar pregnancies was reviewed and showed 69.4% to be complete, 24.5% to be partial, and 6.1% to be nonmolar. This retrospective study over an 11-year period revealed 79 cases of visible congenital malformations in a total of 64,777 deliveries (prevalence 1.2%). No aetiological feature was demonstrated.
