Perinatal light imprinting of circadian clocks and systems (PLICCS): A signature of photoperiod around birth on circadian system stability and association with cancer.

Recent findings from animal models suggest that plasticity of human circadian clocks and systems may be differentially affected by different paradigms of perinatal photoperiod exposure to the detriment of health in later life, including cancer development. Focusing on the example of cancer, we carry out a series of systematic literature reviews concerning perinatal light imprinting of circadian clocks and systems (PLICCS) in animal models, and concerning the risk of cancer development with the primary determinants of the perinatal photoperiod, namely season of birth or latitude of birth. The r

Environmental exposure to combustion-derived air pollution is associated with reduced functional capacity in apparently healthy individuals.

Prior toxicological exposure reports demonstrated the decremental effect of several air pollutants on the metabolic equivalents achieved during exercise testing (METs). There are no prior large scale epidemiological reports about the effect of environmental air pollution exposure on those parameters. We analyzed a cohort of apparently healthy individuals attending a screening survey program held between 2003 and 2009. Participants were included if residing within an 11 km radius from the nearest air pollution monitoring station. Linear regression models were fitted for the metabolic equivalent

[Epidemiology of hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus infections among injecting drug users in Hungary--what's next?].

The prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is currently about 35% among injecting drug users in Budapest, Hungary, and it is under 20% outside of the capital, and no verified case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have been detected so far. Mathematical models describe that the co-occurrence of HIV and HCV among injecting drug users is such under an HCV prevalence of about 35% the probability of an HIV epidemic is low, but above this threshold an, HIV epidemic is to be expected. According to these models, there is a looming probability of an HIV epidemic among injecting drug users

How to improve epidemiological trustworthiness concerning abdominal aortic aneurysms.

BackgroundResearch on degenerative abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) is hampered by complex pathophysiology, sub-optimal pre-clinical models, and lack of effective medical therapies. In addition, trustworthiness of existing epidemiological data is impaired by elements of ambiguity, inaccuracy, and inconsistency. Our aim is to foster debate concerning the trustworthiness of AAA epidemiological data and to discuss potential solutions.MethodsWe searched the literature from the last five decades for relevant epidemiological data concerning AAA development, rupture, and repair. We then discussed the

Decrease in reproductive desires among non-parent heterosexual women during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland: the role of epidemiological stress, socioeconomic status, and reproductive rights.

INTRODUCTION: Deterioration of economic conditions, societal uncertainty, and negative expectations about the future have all been linked to delayed childbearing plans. All these negative circumstances can be related to epidemiological stress, which in turn becomes one of the culprits for changes in fertility plans. This study aims to analyze the individual factors that decrease the probability of wanting to have children after exposure to epidemiological stress from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: Recruitment was conducted between April and July 2021. Participants

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Encephalitozoon cuniculi in Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Italy.

The ecological role and overlap with urban environments make wild carnivores useful epidemiological sentinels for several pathogens. The present study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Encephalitozoon cuniculi in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Central and Southern Italy. Sera from 120 foxes were analyzed using IFAT with a 1:20 cut-off value. Overall, seropositivity was highest for T. gondii (68.5%), followed by E. cuniculi (15.0%) and N. caninum (3.3%). Multivariable logistic regression models with stepwise selection identified age class and loc

Cardiovascular Health Starts in the Womb.

Hypertension has largely been viewed as a disorder of adulthood. Historically, blood pressure (BP) was not routinely measured in children because hypertension was considered uncommon in childhood. It was not until the 1970s that it was apparent that in childhood BP levels were normally lower compared with those in adults, were related to age and growth, and that abnormal BP in children needed different definitions. Based on the distribution of BP levels in available child cohorts, the 95th percentile of BP levels became the definition of hypertension in children and adolescents-an epidemiologi

Acrylamide intake through diet and human cancer risk.

More than one-third of the calories consumed by U.S. and European populations contain acrylamide, a substance classified as a "probable human carcinogen" based on laboratory data. Thus, it is a public health concern to evaluate whether intake of acrylamide at levels found in the food supply is an important cancer risk factor. Mean dietary intake of acrylamide in adults averages 0.5 microg/kg of body weight per day, whereas intake is higher among children. Several epidemiological studies examining the relationship between dietary intake of acrylamide and cancers of the colon, rectum, kidney, bl

Combining an agent-based model with Gaussian process emulation to model the emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in Norway.

Agent-based models (ABMs) are powerful for simulating detailed infectious disease dynamics, but they are computationally intensive, limiting parameter inference. We present a Bayesian history matching approach with Gaussian process emulation to efficiently calibrate an ABM of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in Norway, enabling inference of numerous parameters and reducing computational costs. We apply this technique to model the emergence and subsequent winter wave of the Omicron BA.1/BA.2 variants in Norway from September 2021 to April 2022. By fitting age-specific hospitalisation data, we infer 15 k

Agreement between seroprevalence- and model-based estimates of COVID-19 burden.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic caused significant global harm. Seroprevalence studies detected antibody increases from SARS-CoV-2 infection, assessing transmission and risk from infection. These studies and epidemiological modeling informed public health policy and behavior. Biases in early seroprevalence analyses caused underestimation of fatality risk, including the risk posed to pediatric populations and to those in lower-income nations. The scope of the pandemic was clarified by seroprevalence studies that better assessed at-risk groups and by adj

Negatives about positivity and consistency as conditions for causal inference.

Positivity and causal consistency are sometimes presented as general validity requirements. Positivity, however, is not a general requirement for causal inference and does not address the more demanding practical needs for adequate numbers of observations. Common statistical methods in health and medical research depend on large-sample approximations; yet, approximation accuracy is rarely discussed in research reports, even in cases where it has clearly failed. Prioritization by generality and practical importance shifts the emphasis to approximation accuracy over positivity, with the latter b

Infectious Disease Modelling of HIV Prevention Interventions: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis of Compartmental Models.

BACKGROUND: The HIV epidemic remains a major public health problem. Critical to transmission control are HIV prevention strategies with new interventions continuing to be developed. Mathematical models are important for understanding the potential impact of these interventions and supporting policy decisions. This systematic review aims to answer the following question: when a new HIV prevention intervention is being considered or designed, what information regarding it is necessary to include in a compartmental model to provide useful insights to policy makers? The primary objective of this r

Projected number of children with isolated spina bifida or down syndrome in England and Wales by 2020.

Children with major congenital anomalies often require lifelong access to health and social care services. Estimating future numbers of affected individuals can aid health and social care planning. This study aimed to estimate the number of children aged 0-15 years living with spina bifida or Down syndrome in England and Wales by 2020. Cases of spina bifida and Down syndrome born during 1998-2013 were identified from the Northern Congenital Abnormality Survey and the National Down Syndrome Cytogenetic Register, respectively. The number of infants born with spina bifida during 1998-2019 were es

The effect of intermittent preventive treatment on anti-malarial drug resistance spread in areas with population movement.

BACKGROUND: The use of intermittent preventive treatment in pregnant women (IPTp), children (IPTc) and infant (IPTi) is an increasingly popular preventive strategy aimed at reducing malaria risk in these vulnerable groups. Studies to understand how this preventive intervention can affect the spread of anti-malarial drug resistance are important especially when there is human movement between neighbouring low and high transmission areas. Because the same drug is sometimes utilized for IPTi and for symptomatic malaria treatment, distinguishing their individual roles on accelerating the spread of

Schistosomiasis japonica: modelling as a tool to explore transmission patterns.

Modelling is an important tool for the exploration of Schistosoma japonicum transmission patterns. It provides a general theoretical framework for decision-makers and lends itself specifically to assessing the progress of the national control programme by following the outcome of surveys. The challenge of keeping up with the many changes of social, ecological and environmental factors involved in control activities is greatly facilitated by modelling that can also indicate which activities are critical and which are less important. This review examines the application of modelling tools in the

The estimation of direct and indirect causal effects in the presence of misclassified binary mediator.

Mediation analysis serves to quantify the effect of an exposure on an outcome mediated by a certain intermediate and to quantify the extent to which the effect is direct. When the mediator is misclassified, the validity of mediation analysis can be severely undermined. The contribution of the present work is to study the effects of non-differential misclassification of a binary mediator in the estimation of direct and indirect causal effects when the outcome is either continuous or binary and exposure-mediator interaction can be present, and to allow the correction of misclassification. Real-time modelling used for outbreak management during a cholera epidemic, Haiti, 2010-2011.

The emergence of epidemic cholera in post-earthquake Haiti portended a public health disaster of uncertain magnitude. In order to coordinate relief efforts in an environment with limited healthcare infrastructure and stretched resources, timely and realistic projections of the extent of the cholera outbreak were crucial. Projections were shared with Government and partner organizations beginning 5 days after the first reported case and were updated using progressively more advanced methods as more surveillance data became available. The first projection estimated that 105 000 cholera cases wou

Evaluation of syndromic surveillance systems--design of an epidemic simulation model.

INTRODUCTION: The paucity of outbreak data from biologic terrorism and emerging infectious diseases limits the evaluation of syndromic surveillance systems. Evaluation using naturally occurring outbreaks of proxy disease (e.g., influenza) is one alternative but does not allow for rigorous evaluation. Another approach is to inject simulated outbreaks into real background data, but existing simulation models generally do not account for such factors as spatial mobility and do not explicitly incorporate knowledge of the disease agent. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this analysis was to design a sim

Fitting models of carcinogenesis to a case-control study of breast cancer.

Data from a case-control study of breast cancer in 441 cases and matched controls aged less than or equal to 38 in Los Angeles is fitted to two models of carcinogenesis: the two-stage model of Moolgavkar and Knudson; and a multistage adaptation of the log/log model proposed by Pike et al. In the two-stage model, risk factors (here age at menarche, age at first pregnancy, abortion, regularity of cycling, benign breast disease, and use of oral contraceptives (OCs] are postulated to act either by increasing the rate of mutation of normal to intermediate or of intermediate to malignant stage cells
