Multimodality evoked potentials (somatosensory and acoustic) have been recorded before surgery in children selected for surgical treatment for different kinds of craniostenosis and craniofacial stenosis. Multimodal evoked potentials in patients with trigeminal neuralgia are analyzed in the paper. The comprehensive studies of cortical trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials, visual evoked potentials, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials have revealed their changes that are indicative of the impaired central mechanisms of afferentation in patients with trigeminal abnormality. The findings are discussed in the light of the theory of generator mechanisms of neuropathological pain syndromes.

Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an experimental model for multiple sclerosis. In order to study autoimmune retrocochlear hearing loss, we performed brain stem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) studies on EAE mice. The EAE was induced in B10.PL and (PL/J x SJL)F1 mice. We report on 6 patients (average age 13 months) with ambiguous genitalia who underwent stimulation of the dorsal neurovascular bundle of the phallus during feminizing genitoplasty. Three patients had the adrenogenital syndrome, 1 underwent removal of a masculinizing adrenal tumor before genital reconstruction, 1 had mixed gonadal dysgenesis and 1 had male pseudohermaphroditism. We describe two unrelated girls with slowly progressive leukodystrophy with macrocephaly. On MRI, both patients exhibited diffuse involvement of the cerebral white matter, excluding the internal capsule and optic radiation. Their visual-evoked potentials were normal. Short-latency somatosensory-evoked potentials exhibited the absence of early scalp components. Auditory brainstem responses in both patients showed intramedullary conduction disturbance. These MRI and electrophysiological findings are similar to those in infantile Alexander disease.

We analyzed lumbosacral and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials in three spinal cord injury patients undergoing evaluation of intrathecal baclofen infusion for management of spasticity. A mild electric shock applied to the lower lip was used to elicit reliable evoked potentials from the trigeminal nerve in 20 normal young adults. Pattern reversal and flash evoked potentials were recorded in 13 children with dissociated vertical deviation. We found no evidence of anomalous responses to pattern reversal half-field stimulation and no asymmetries in flash responses as reported to occur in albinism. However, we found that patients with dissociated vertical deviation had significantly smaller monocular and binocular pattern responses compared to a group of age-matched control subjects.

In the neurosurgical intensive care unit 135 patients were studied by means of multi-modality evoked potentials. The majority part of them had low scores on the Glasgow Coma Scale and a higher lever of coma according to WFNS. This fact explains the high mortality (52 per cent).
