Standardized stereological methods were performed on biopsies from three subjects with normal skin and from three patients with autosomal dominant and three with autosomal recessive sex-linked ichthyosis to determine the relative numbers and dimensions of desmosomes. The results showed an increase in the persistence of desmosomes in the stratum corneum in both ichthyotic groups. This suggests a pathogenetic role for desmosomes in the abnormal desquamation of the two types of ichthyosis vulgaris.

Several mediators, including fatty acids, have been postulated to induce the increase in permeability of the pulmonary endothelium and subsequent accumulation of extravascular lung water (EVLW) which are generally considered to be among the first events in the development of adult respiratory distress syndrome. Clinical quantitation of water accumulation in the lungs is imprecise. The technique of measuring extravascular lung water (EVLW) with double indicator dilution utilizing cold indocyanine green dye has become practical with the addition of a microprocessor. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the extracellular fluid volume (ECV) were determined in 5 rhesus monkeys infected with P. knowlesi in comparison with 6 control monkeys by using 51Cr-EDTA.
