Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is associated with a complex pattern of various clinical conditions. We investigated how risk factors cluster in children with SAM, the relationship between clusters of risk factors and mortality as well as length of stay in children with SAM. A prospective observational study design was used. Data were extracted from medical records of 601 infants and children aged 0-59 months admitted and treated for SAM in three Ghanaian referral hospital between June 2013 and June 2018. Among the 601 medical records extracted, ninety-nine died. Three clusters of medical feat

Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea is now a reality, as well as the consequences of untreatable infections. Gonococcal eye infections result in blindness if not properly treated; they accounted for the vast majority of infections in children in homes for the blind in the pre-antibiotic era. Neisseria gonorrhoeae infects the eyes of infants born to mothers with gonorrhea and can also infect the eyes of adults. Changes in sexual practices may account for the rise in adult gonococcal eye infections, although some cases seem to have occurred with no associated genital infection. As gonorrhea becomes i…

Human thelaziasis is a zoonotic eye disease caused by a nematode parasite called Thelazia. In India, seven human cases of Thelazia have been reported earlier. This is the first case report of an infant infected with Thelazia. During the month of July, 2012, the infant was presented with an eye problem to the eye clinic from a village of Dibrugarh. Five worms (three female and two male) were recovered from the left eye of the infant. Thelazia infection is rare in infant, and report of this case is suggestive of prevalence of infection in the area and warrants further investigation.

Farmers face higher health risks due to constant exposure to environmental and occupational hazards. Prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of UV-related eye damage (e.g., cataracts and pterygium), and frequent contact with dust, pesticides, and airborne debris can lead to chronic eye irritation, infections, and long-term vision problems. The physical demands of farm work, along with limited access to protective eyewear and healthcare, further compound these risks, and make eye health a significant concern in agricultural communities. This cross-sectional study examines the prevalence of ey

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is the major cause of infective uveitis. Since the eye is a special organ protected by immune privilege, its immune response is different from general organs with Toxoplasma gondii infection. Here, we used Kunming outbred mice to establish OT by intravitreal injection of T. gondii RH strain tachyzoites, IL-33 expression in the eyes was localized by immunostaining, the levels of interleukin (IL)-33 and ST2 (IL-33 receptor) and T-helper (Th)1 and Th2-associated cytokines in the eye and cervical lymph nodes (CLNs) of infected mice were measured, and their correlations we

Herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are widespread human pathogens that establish chronic latent infections leading to recurrent episodes. Current treatments are limited, necessitating the development of novel antiviral strategies. This study aimed to assess the antiviral efficacy of novel topical formulations containing interferon alpha-2b (IFN α-2b) against HSV-1 and HSV-2. The formulations, Oftalmoferon® forte (eye drops) and Interferon Vaginal Tablets, demonstrated potent antiviral effects against HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Vero cells, respectively, with concentration-dependen

The rise in antimicrobial resistance has prompted the development of alternatives to combat bacterial infections. Bald's eyesalve, a remedy used in the Early Medieval period, has previously been shown to have efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus in in vitro and in vivo models of chronic wounds. However, the safety profile of Bald's eyesalve has not yet been demonstrated, and this is vital before testing in humans. Here, we determined the safety potential of Bald's eyesalve using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo models representative of skin or eye infections. We also confirmed that Bald's eyes…

BACKGROUND: Infections of the retina with the varicella-zoster virus can lead to severe visual impairment. Patients with immunodeficiency are particularly predisposed to viral infections, and the alterations of the immune system may lead to a modified clinical picture.
PATIENTS: Two cases of infections of the retina with the varicella-zoster virus in an immunocompromised and an immunocompetent patient are presented. The first otherwise healthy patient showed the typical clinical picture of the "acute retinal necrosis syndrome" with orbital pain and decrease of vision. He had inflammatory infi

Two boys with ophthalmomyiasis caused by the first instar larva of the reindeer warble fly Hypoderma tarandi are reported. Both were 9 years old and came from the coast of northern Norway. One had ophthalmomyiasis interna posterior and one eye had been removed because of progressive pain and blindness. Histological examination showed the remains of a fly larva. The second boy had ophthalmomyiasis externa with a tumour in the upper eyelid, and histological examination showed a warble with a well preserved larva. Identification of the parasite in the histological material was based on the findin

BACKGROUND: Chlorhexidine, a well-established antiseptic in systemic medicine and dentistry, has long been overlooked in ophthalmology outside its role in Acanthamoeba keratitis. However, recent evidence supports its potential as an effective adjunct or alternative agent in multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial keratitis, where treatment options remain limited and therapeutic challenges are escalating. This review aims to revisit ocular use of chlorhexidine.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed in the PubMed database using combinations of the following keywords: "chlorhexidine", "kerat

Trabeculectomy with antimetabolites is the most commonly performed surgery worldwide for glaucoma patients with progressive optic nerve head injury and visual field loss despite maximum pharmacologic intraocular pressure-lowering therapy. Trabeculectomy bleb-associated infections remain one of the most feared early and long-term complications of trabeculectomy surgery because of their poor prognosis and variable response to antimicrobial therapy. Several studies have evaluated how surgical technique, conjunctival incision location, comorbid ocular pathology, concurrent medication use, and bleb

Coelomycetous fungi are among the emerging causes of infections and have been involved in many kinds of infections, including keratitis and endophtalmitis. Here, we present the first case of keratitis caused by Neocucurbitaria unguis-hominis, a coelomycetous fungus belonging to the family Cucurbitariaceae. In this case report, we describe the clinical presentation of a 56-year-old woman, a regular contact lens wearer, who was treated for pain in her right eye and fixed spot vision after an injury with plant debris. On examination, a corneal ulcer was observed, the foreign body was removed, and

A survey conducted on a stable, mainly rural population of 60,820 in Central Ethiopia revealed an overall blindness prevalence of 1.1%. A follow up study was carried out to accurately determine the etiologies and causes of visual loss and impairment. A detailed ophthalmic evaluation was done on 523 out of 872 individuals identified as being visually impaired. The results showed that 194 (37%) were blind (Categories 3, 4, and 5 = maximum visual acuity less than 3/60 in the better eye). One hundred and seven (21%) (Categories 1 & 2 = maximum visual acuity better than 3/60 to less than 6/18 in th

Ocular infections and inflammation represent a clear risk to eye health, but standard eye masks often lack the necessary therapeutic features. Moreover, most existing studies employ a blended electrospinning approach, which leads to an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of the therapeutic agents. However, using the coaxial technique can address these limitations. This study develops a coaxial electrospun nanofibrous eye mask with dual antibacterial and antioxidant functions, aiming to provide an innovative ocular treatment tool for eye care. Generally, a core-shell structured bilayer polycapro
