BACKGROUND: Impairments in affective cognition are part of the neurocognitive profile and possible treatment targets in bipolar disorder (BD), but the findings are heterogeneous. The International Society of Bipolar Disorder (ISBD) Targeting Cognition Task Force conducted a systematic review to (i) identify the most consistent findings in affective cognition in BD, and (ii) provide suggestions for affective cognitive domains for future study and meta-analyses.
METHODS: The review included original studies reporting behavioral measures of affective cognition in BD patients vs controls followin

BACKGROUND: An altered pattern of threat processing is deemed critical for the development of anxiety disorders (AD). According to the hypervigilance-avoidance hypothesis, AD patients show hypervigilance to threat cues at early stages of processing but avoid threat cues at later stages of processing. Consistently, adults with AD show enhanced neurophysiological responses to threat in early time windows and reduced responses to threat in late time windows. The presence of such a hypervigilance-avoidance effect and its underlying neural sources remain to be determined in clinically anxious child

OBJECTIVES: Introduce a novel method for objectively evaluating attentional bias to peripheral facial deformities using an established metric of attention.
METHODS: The SMI eye-tracker system (SensoMotoric Inc., Boston, MA) was used to record the eye movement patterns, called scanpaths, of eight naïve observers gazing at pictures of faces with or without peripheral surgical deformities. The scanpaths of observers gazing on those novel faces were compared, and the fixation durations for different facial regions were compared between faces.
RESULTS: There were statistically significant differe

Previous research with speeded-response interference tasks modeled on the Garner paradigm has demonstrated that task-irrelevant variations in either emotional expression or facial speech do not interfere with identity judgments, but irrelevant variations in identity do interfere with expression and facial speech judgments. Sex, like identity, is a relatively invariant aspect of faces. Drawing on a recent model of face processing according to which invariant and changeable aspects of faces are represented in separate neurological systems, we predicted asymmetric interference between sex and emo

We report three large experiments (n = 440 in total) investigating the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) at Fp3 on perceptual learning indexed by the face inversion effect (FIE). Experiments employed a double-blinded design, with participants randomly allocated to different tDCS groups. They then participated in an old/new recognition task involving both upright and inverted faces. Consistent with previous research, our findings indicate that anodal tDCS reduces the FIE compared to sham tDCS/control by impairing the recognition performance of upright faces. Crucially, o

Primates are known for their exceptional ability to recognize faces. However, we still have much to learn about how their brains process faces when they are partially hidden. When we cover parts of a face, it affects how our brains respond, even though we still perceive the face as a whole. This suggests that complex brain networks are at work in understanding partially hidden faces. To explore this further, we studied two brain regions, the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) and the inferior temporal cortex (ITC), while showing primate images of faces with parts occluded. We found that v

Neuroimaging and intracranial electrophysiological studies have consistently shown the largest and most consistent face-selective neural activity in the middle portion of the human right lateral fusiform gyrus ('fusiform face area(s)', FFA). Yet, direct evidence for the critical role of this region in face identity recognition (FIR) is still lacking. Here we report the first evidence of transient behavioral impairment of FIR during focal electrical stimulation of the right FFA. Upon stimulation of an electrode contact within this region, subject CJ, who shows typical FIR ability outside of sti

Humans recognize individual faces regardless of variation in the facial view. The view-tuned face neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex are regarded as the neural substrate for view-invariant face recognition. This study approximated visual features encoded by these neurons as combinations of local orientations and colors, originated from natural image fragments. The resultant features reproduced the preference of these neurons to particular facial views. We also found that faces of one identity were separable from the faces of other identities in a space where each axis represented one

Accurate recognition of partially occluded faces remains challenging in unconstrained and real-time environments, especially under masks, partial occlusions, pose variation, and illumination changes. This study presents a controlled comparison of three hybrid multi-face recognition pipelines for robust occluded face recognition. For fair evaluation, all pipelines use the same SCRFD face detector, preprocessing protocol, Linear SVM classifier, and 60% unknown rejection threshold, while varying only the feature extractor: ResNet29, ConvNeXt, and ResNet100 with ArcFace embeddings. To reduce data

Although gaze information is important for human interactions, recent studies show that in natural exchanges, mutual face-to-face looks occur relatively infrequently, on less than 15% of interaction time. In the present study, we conducted two dyadic interaction experiments utilizing dual mobile eye-tracking eyeglasses to examine if the prevalence of mutual face-to-face looks may be affected by interactive context. In Experiment 1, we strengthened the interactive context by measuring looking behaviours in dyads of friends. In Experiment 2, we weakened the interactive context by measuring looki

Transient early visual deprivation in humans impairs the processing of faces more than of other object categories. While configural face processing and face individuation appear to be largely impaired in sight recovery individuals following congenital visual deprivation, their behavioral ability to categorize stimuli as faces has been described as preserved. Here we thoroughly investigated rapid automatic face categorization in individuals who had recovered sight after congenital blindness. Eighteen participants (6 women, 12 men) who had undergone congenital cataract reversal surgery participa

A central assumption of neuroscience is that long-term memories are represented by the same brain areas that encode sensory stimuli1. Neurons in inferotemporal (IT) cortex represent the sensory percept of visual objects using a distributed axis code2-4. Whether and how the same IT neural population represents the long-term memory of visual objects remains unclear. Here we examined how familiar faces are encoded in the IT anterior medial face patch (AM), perirhinal face patch (PR) and temporal pole face patch (TP). In AM and PR we observed that the encoding axis for familiar faces is rotated re

Benzodiazepines are commonly used drugs to treat anxiety in crime witnesses. These increase GABA inhibitory effects, which impairs aversive memory encoding and consolidation. Eyewitness memory is essential in justice. However, memory is malleable leading to false memories that could cause a selection of an innocent in a lineup. Here, we studied whether a low dose of Clonazepam impairs memory encoding as well as consolidation of faces and narrative of the event. We performed two experiments using a double-blind and between subject design (N = 216). Day 1: subjects watched a crime video and rece

Regions in ventral temporal cortex that are involved in visual recognition of categories like words and faces undergo differential development during childhood. However, categories are also represented in distributed responses across high-level visual cortex. How distributed category representations develop and if this development relates to behavioral changes in recognition remains largely unknown. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to longitudinally measure the development of distributed responses across ventral temporal cortex to 10 categories in school-age children over se

In everyday life we constantly experience distractions. Some distractors might be more distracting than others, for example the human face, which has been shown to be very efficient in attracting attention. Here, we employed the irrelevant-distractor paradigm (Forster & Lavie, 2016) to measure behavioural and neural distraction by completely irrelevant faces or non-faces (cars), while participants performed a letter search task that was more (high-load) or less (low-load) demanding. Under low load conditions, faces and cars equally slowed responses on trials with distractors as compared to tho

The ability to decode facial emotions is of primary importance for human social interactions; yet, it is still debated how we analyze faces to determine their expression. Here we compared the processing of emotional face expressions through holistic integration and/or local analysis of visual features, and determined which brain systems mediate these distinct processes. Behavioral, physiological, and brain responses to happy and angry faces were assessed by presenting congruent global configurations of expressions (e.g., happy top+happy bottom), incongruent composite configurations (e.g., angr

Ensemble perception enables observers to rapidly extract the mean emotion from a crowd of faces, yet its neural mechanisms remain unclear. Combining behavioral measures, event-related potentials (ERPs), and multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA), we investigated the temporal dynamics of crowd emotion perception and the moderating role of emotional valence. At the behavioral level, we observed a happiness superiority effect in recognition accuracy and speed. At the neural level, MVPA revealed respective neural representations for crowd versus individual face processing. ERP results further deline

The present study examined the effect of trait anxiety on voluntary orienting and inhibitory control responses triggered by averted gaze in emotional faces (fearful, happy, and neutral) in a mixed pro- and anti-saccade task. High- and low-anxious groups did not differ in terms of error rates, but the results showed that high-anxious individuals were slower to initiate a saccade in response to eye-gaze cues for fearful faces, irrespective of whether a pro- or anti-saccade was required. The present results support the Attentional Control Theory (ACT), which proposes that anxiety impairs processi

The "Cone of Gaze" (CoG), a measure of the range of gaze angles that one perceives to be looking at them, has been proposed as a biobehavioural marker of psychiatric disorders characterised by symptoms in the social domain, such as social anxiety disorder. However, the evidence remains inconsistent and its mechanisms unclear. Here, we combine meta-analysis and well-powered experimental replications to investigate: 1) individual differences in the CoG between those with and without social anxiety; 2) within-subjects differences in the CoG in response to faces with angry versus neutral expressio

Social cognition (SC) encompasses a set of cognitive functions that enable individuals to understand and respond appropriately to social interactions. Although focused ultrasound subthalamotomy (FUS-STN) effectively treats Parkinson's disease (PD) clinical motor features, its impact and safety on cognitive-behavioral interactions/interpersonal awareness are unknown. This study investigated the effects of unilateral FUS-STN on facial emotion recognition (FER) and affective and cognitive theory of mind (ToM) in PD patients from a randomized sham-controlled trial (NCT03454425).
