Health Information Sources Within Low Income Black Communities: A Families SHARE Study.

BackgroundAccess to credible health information is critical for health literacy and informed health behaviors. Although digital platforms are widely used, limited technology access and lower eHealth literacy may constrain online health information seeking in some communities. Black and low-income individuals, in particular, may rely less on internet-based sources and more on in-person channels, including social networks and community-based organizations.AimsThis study examined community-based sources of health information used by Black individuals living in a low-income, urban area.MethodsSemi

Patient and family engagement in the analysis of adverse events in health care: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVES: This review will map patients' and families' engagement in the analysis of adverse events in health care, along with the methods or tools employed in that process of analysis, and the strategies employed to engage patients and their families in the analysis. INTRODUCTION: Patient and family engagement in health care has gained importance, expanding these individuals' roles in identifying and analyzing adverse events. Their involvement may reveal unrecognized failures and improve patient safety. However, evidence on how patients and families are engaged in this process, including m

Opportunities and Challenges in Translating Genomics into Population Health Impact: Lessons from Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common, autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by lifelong elevations in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and a markedly increased risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Despite a well-defined genetic architecture, highly effective therapies, and strong evidence demonstrating the benefits of early identification and treatment, FH has historically remained underdiagnosed and undertreated worldwide. This persistent gap highlights broader challenges in translating genomic discovery into measurable population heal

Mental health and stigma in persons affected by Hansen's disease and their families in rural Sitapur, India.

Psychological problems are common among persons affected by Hansen's disease, a chronic but treatable disease that remains endemic in India despite available and effective treatment. Stigmatisation can also lead to delayed care-seeking, which can impede eradication efforts and negatively impact the physical and psycho-social wellbeing of the affected person and their family. This study aimed to examine how stigma in society affect the mental health of persons with Hansen's disease and their families in endemic villages of Sitapur, India. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore how

The association between household and family composition and mental health of the elderly: mediating role of lifestyle.

BACKGROUND: Mental health in the elderly has multiple determinants, and studies indicate household and family composition, economic status, and family support are key factors. However, these are difficult to modify, and better lifestyle for the elderly can be a possible intervention. The current study examined the mediating role of lifestyle in the association between these three types of the household and family composition (living alone, living with a spouse, and living with children) and mental health in older adults. METHODS: We studied 5,407 participants (58.7% female, age 45 + years) fr

Cohort profile: the Adverse Childhood Experiences cohort of the Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health.

PURPOSE: The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) cohort of the Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH-ACE) is a study of adolescents surveyed during 2017-2021. It provides an important opportunity to examine the longitudinal impact of ACEs on health and development across the early life course. The MLSFH-ACE cohort provides rich data on adolescents, their children and adult caregivers in a low-income, high-HIV-prevalence context in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). PARTICIPANTS: The MLSFH-ACE cohort is a population-based study of adolescents living in three districts in rural Malawi.

Understanding and addressing mental health challenges of families admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

This article reviews the psychological distress experienced by NICU families, including anxiety, postpartum depression (PPD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in addition to providing recommendations for clinicians at the individual, institutional, and national level. Currently, mental health screenings, specialized evaluations, and treatment options are not routinely offered to NICU families and are frequently under-utilized when offered. Here we provide expert opinion recommendations to address challenges in supporting universal screening, offering bedside interventions, including

Clinical and Psychosocial Outcomes Associated With a Tele-behavioral Health Platform for Families: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The burden of pediatric mental illness in the United States has steadily worsened over the past decade. A recent increase in employer-sponsored behavioral health programs has focused on the needs of the general population. However, these programs do not provide the specialty mental health care required for children, adolescents, and their families. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a technology-enabled pediatric and family behavioral health service on clinical outcomes among children and caregiver strain. The service is available to commercially insured popula

Mipomersen in Familial Hypercholesterolemia: An Update on Health-Related Quality of Life and Patient-Reported Outcomes.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant condition that leads to significantly elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. Mipomersen is an antisense oligonucleotide inhibitor targeted to apolipoprotein B-100 (apoB-100) mRNA that is administered via subcutaneous injection. Once administered, mipomersen causes selective degradation of the apoB-100 mRNA and inhibition of protein translation. This ultimately results in substantial reductions in LDL-C and other lipoprotein levels. Mipomersen is approved for the tre

Comparing contributors of parental sleep health in families with and without a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: The sleep health of caregivers of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is often overlooked in clinical practice and research. This study characterizes the sleep health of caregivers of children with DMD (4-17 years) compared to parents of age-matched, unaffected children. We explore potential contributors to parental sleep efficiency and hypothesize that child awakenings will have a considerable influence on parental sleep efficiency. METHODS: In this observational study, parents and their children were asked to wear the ActiGraph GT9X Link at night for 1 month. From th

Estimating health state utilities associated with a rare disease: familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS).

Aims: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS) is a rare genetic disorder with no currently approved therapies. Treatments are in development, and cost-utility analyses will be needed to examine their value. These models will require health state utilities representing FCS. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate utilities for FCS and an associated episode of acute pancreatitis (AP).Methods: Because it is not feasible to gather a large enough sample of patients with this extremely rare condition to complete standardized preference-based measures, vignette-based methods were used to

Family Relationships and the Health and Well-Being of Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth: A Critical Review.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth experience significant health and well-being disparities compared to their cisgender peers. However, disparities experienced at a population level might be mitigated by individual-level factors such as strong family relationships. Discrete aspects of strong family relationships may impact the health and well-being of TGD youth differently. To date, no systematic review known to us has explored the state of the science regarding the association between family relationships and the health and well-being of TGD adolescents and young adults. As such, our

Family history of prostate and colorectal cancer and risk of colorectal cancer in the Women's health initiative.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that risk of colorectal and prostate cancer is increased among those with a family history of the same disease, particularly among first-degree relatives. However, the aggregation of colorectal and prostate cancer within families has not been well investigated. METHODS: Analyses were conducted among participants of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) observational cohort, free of cancer at the baseline examination. Subjects were followed for colorectal cancer through August 31st, 2009. A Cox-proportional hazards regression modeling approach was used to estimate r

[Families of incarcerated women, health promotion and access to social policies in the Federal District, Brazil].

This paper assesses the options for accessing public policies available to families of women incarcerated in the female penitentiary of Brazil's Federal District. It seeks to contribute to the construction of health promotion strategies for the female population living in the prison system. Some of the claims were revealed in the national comprehensive healthcare policy for individuals in the prison system, especially those that acknowledge the importance of intersectoral actions and relationship networks to promote health. Data are presented from research conducted at the penitentiary in 2014

Promoting healthful family meals to prevent obesity: HOME Plus, a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Family meal frequency has been shown to be strongly associated with better dietary intake; however, associations with weight status have been mixed. Family meals-focused randomized controlled trials with weight outcomes have not been previously conducted. Therefore, this study purpose was to describe weight-related outcomes of the HOME Plus study, the first family meals-focused randomized controlled trial to prevent excess weight gain among youth. METHODS: Families (n = 160 8-12-year-old children and their parents/guardians) were randomized to intervention (n = 81) or control (n =
