Young mothers' prenatal attachment and later attachment-related representations of their young children.

Although mother-to-infant attachment begins during pregnancy, few studies have explored correlates of prenatal attachment and associations with later measures of attachment representations. This study explored whether prenatal attachment is related to attachment representations during toddlerhood and whether associations between them reflect the broader quality of mothers' relationships. Young, ethnically/racially diverse, low-income American women (n = 160) were followed from pregnancy through 30 months postpartum. Questionnaires assessed prenatal attachment (Maternal Antenatal Attachment Sca

Rainbow babies: Trauma and parenting after pregnancy loss.

OBJECTIVE: Parents with a history of pregnancy loss may be at greater risk for less secure attachment (Côté-Arsenault et al., 2020) and likely experience parenting differently than those without pregnancy loss. However, existing literature regarding pregnancy loss and parenting has focused nearly exclusively on attachment and has produced inconsistent findings. The present study aims to expand the scope of previously studied parenting indices by examining the role of pregnancy loss in relation to beliefs about parenthood as well as levels of parental support, satisfaction, involvement, and lim

The effect of parental expressed emotion on glycaemic control in children with Type 1 diabetes. Parental expressed emotion and glycaemic control in children.

OBJECTIVE: To measure expressed emotion (EE) in parents of young children with diabetes and to examine the relation between EE and glycaemic control in children with Type 1 diabetes in a longitudinal study over 24 months. We hypothesised that good glycaemic control, as measured by low glycated haemoglobin levels, would be predicted by high parental emotional over-involvement, low frequency of critical comments and absence of hostility. We predicted that these effects would be stronger in maternal than paternal scores. METHODS: Forty-seven children attending a Paediatric Diabetes Clinic and th

Attachment states of mind and inferred childhood experiences in maltreated and comparison adolescents from low-income families.

This paper reports the first large-sample investigation of the maltreatment-related correlates of low-income adolescents' narratives about their childhood experiences with primary caregivers, as assessed with a modified version of the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and based on official reports of abuse and neglect (maltreated n = 214, nonmaltreated n = 140; M age = 16.7 years). Drawing on factor-analytic and taxometric evidence indicating that AAI narratives vary along two state of mind (i.e., dismissing and preoccupied) and two inferred childhood experience (i.e., maternal and paternal) di

The family as a determinant of stunting in children living in conditions of extreme poverty: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in children can be a consequence of unfavourable socioeconomic conditions. However, some families maintain adequate nutritional status in their children despite living in poverty. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether family-related factors are determinants of stunting in young Mexican children living in extreme poverty, and whether these factors differ between rural or urban contexts. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in one rural and one urban extreme poverty level areas in Mexico. Cases comprised stunted children aged between 6 and 23 months. Con

Pre-literacy skills of subgroups of children with speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of parenting for the child's early socio-emotional development, parenting perceptions and behaviours, and their correlates, should be assessed as early as possible in the child's life. The goals of the present study were 1) to confirm, in two parallel population-based samples, including a large sample of twins, the factor structure of a new self-administered questionnaire assessing both parents' specific parenting perceptions and behaviours toward their 5-month-old infants (i.e., parental self-efficacy, perceived parental impact, parental hostile-reactive behav

Effects of Observable Parent Alcohol Consequences and Parent Alcohol Disorder on Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies.

BACKGROUND: Parental drinking and parent alcohol use disorder (AUD) are known predictors of adolescent positive alcohol expectancies, but their link to negative expectancies is unclear. Research suggests that parent drinking may indirectly predict adolescent expectancies through exposure to parental drinking events. However, exposure to parent negative alcohol consequences may be more relevant to adolescents' expectancies. The present study tested the mediating effect of parent observable negative alcohol consequences in the association between parent AUD and adolescent expectancies. METHODS:

Delta-beta coupling is associated with paternal caregiving behaviors during preschool.

Neural systems that index self-regulation have been associated with mental health outcomes, including risk for anxiety problems, from early in life. Yet, little is known about the environmental factors that may impact the development of neural systems of regulation. Behavioral work suggests that sensitive parenting, or parents' ability to correctly interpret and respond to children's signals, supports the development of regulation. Conversely, harsh parenting, or uninvolved or punitive parent behaviors, is thought to compromise developing regulatory systems. We recorded preschoolers' baseline

A review of the long-term effects of child sexual abuse.

The existing literature on the long-term sequelae of child sexual abuse is reviewed. The evidence suggests that sexual abuse is an important problem with serious long-term sequelae; but the specific effects of sexual abuse, independent of force, threat of force, or such family variables as parental psychopathology, are still to be clarified. Adult women with a history of childhood sexual abuse show greater evidence of sexual disturbance or dysfunction, homosexual experiences in adolescence or adulthood, depression, and are more likely than nonabused women to be revictimized. Anxiety, fear, and

The significance of attachment security for children's social competence with peers: a meta-analytic study.

This meta-analytic review examines the association between attachment during the early life course and social competence with peers during childhood, and compares the strength of this association with those for externalizing and internalizing symptomatology. Based on 80 independent samples (N = 4441), the association between security and peer competence was significant (d = 0.39, CI 0.32; 0.47) and not moderated by the age at which peer competence was assessed. Avoidance (d = 0.17, CI 0.05; 0.30), resistance (d = 0.29, CI 0.09; 0.48), and disorganization (d = 0.25, CI 0.10; 0.40) were signific

A shoulder to cry on: preschoolers' crying, temperament, and attachment security.

Whereas attachment scholars argue that variations in crying in the SSP reflect the quality of child-parent relationships, temperament scholars contend that they primarily reflect temperamental traits. Few studies have examined this debate in preschoolers, who may display distinct crying responses. This paper explores whether preschoolers' crying behaviors reflect their attachment relationships or their negative affectivity. Attachment dimensions and crying behaviors were assessed in 144 preschoolers who completed Preschool-SSPs during independent visits with their mothers and fathers. Parents

Medical adherence in young adolescents with spina bifida: longitudinal associations with family functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was 2-fold: (1) to explore the transfer of responsibility of medical tasks from parent to child during the transition to adolescence, and (2) to examine the associations between family functioning and medical adherence in youth with spina bifida. METHODS: Seventy families of children with spina bifida participated in this study. Data were collected during family interaction sessions by using questionnaires completed by mothers, fathers, youth, teachers and health professionals. RESULTS: Findings suggest that responsibility for medical regimens transfers g

Psychosocial adaptations of shunted hydrocephalic children.

The personality, psychosomatic symptoms and family characteristics of 55 shunted hydrocephalic children older than four years were studied. Hydrocephalic childrens' self-concept, measured by the Children's Appereception Test, was found to be very significantly poorer than that of the control children. They also frequently showed behaviour disorders of the MBD-type, e.g. concentration difficulties, aggressiveness, fastidious eating and nervousness. The hydrocephalic childrens' families showed very significantly more cohesion and less rigidity, and significantly less authoritarianism than averag

Can I have a second child? Dilemmas of mothers of children with pervasive developmental disorder: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) has an uncertain etiology, no method of treatment, and results in communication deficiencies and other behavioral problems. As the reported recurrence risk is 5%-10% and there are no methods of either prevention or prenatal testing, mothers of PDD children may face unique challenges when contemplating second pregnancies. The purpose of this study was to explore the mothers' lived experiences of second child-related decision-making after the birth of a child with PDD. METHODS: The participants for this study were restricted to mothers living w
