Isolation and identification of keratinolytic probiotic Bucillus licheniformis bacteria from the soil below poultry slaughterhouse waste.

Feathers make up 7% of the total weight of adult chickens and keratin protein makes up 85% of the feathers. Today, the keratinase enzymes of some Bacillus strains are used to degrade and process raw keratin waste for animal and poultry feed. According to various studies, the probiotic properties of some spore-shaped Bacillus have also been proven. The study aimed to isolation of the keratinolytic Bacillus bacteria that they have probiotic properties for using in the livestock and poultry feed industry. We were able to isolate 8 strains of Bacillus licheniformis with kreatin degrading propertie…

Phytogenic Additives Enhance Welfare and Egg Quality in Laying Japanese Quail without Affecting Performance.

This study hypothesized that supplementing Japanese quail diets with phytogenic additives could reduce stress-related behaviors and improve egg quality. The objective was to evaluate the effects of Passiflora incarnata and Pimpinella anisum on performance, egg quality, body and cloacal temperatures, behavior, tonic immobility, body injuries, and feather condition in laying quails. One hundred twenty birds, 150 days old, were randomly assigned to three treatments: control, 1.00 mg/kg Passiflora incarnata, and 1.00 mg/kg Pimpinella anisum, with eight replicates of five birds. Evaluations lasted

The attenuated live vaccine strain W2512 provides protection against novel variant infectious bursal disease virus.

Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) causes an acute and highly contagious infectious disease characterized by severe immunosuppression, causing great economic losses to the poultry industry globally. Over the past 30 years, this disease has been well controlled through vaccination and strict biosafety measures. However, novel variant IBDV strains have emerged in recent years, posing a new threat to the poultry industry. Our previous epidemiological survey showed that few novel variant IBDV strains had been isolated from chickens immunized with the attenuated live vaccine W2512-, suggesting

Lymphocyte populations in dermal lymphoid aggregates of vitiliginous Smyth line and normally pigmented light brown Leghorn chickens.

Smyth line (SL) chickens develop a spontaneous, autoimmune loss of melanocytes (vitiligo) from the feather. To determine whether lymphocyte infiltration into two-week-old regenerating feathers of vitiliginous chickens was accompanied by lymphocyte infiltration into the skin, skin biopsies were conducted in SL chickens at two-week intervals throughout the development of vitiligo (SLV) when the chicks were 6 to 14 weeks of age. Control skin samples were obtained from age-matched, normally-pigmented Light Brown Leghorn (LBL) chickens. Frozen skin sections were labelled with a panel of mouse mAb t…

Effects of aviary opening times and dietary crude fiber contents on integument and keel bone condition in brown layer pullets.

Plumage damage (PD) caused by severe feather pecking, skin injuries (SI) caused by cannibalism, and keel bone alterations present major challenges for animal welfare, performance and profitability in commercial pullet rearing and subsequent laying hen management. Preventive measures should already be implemented during rearing, but prospective longitudinal studies during the rearing period investigating how dietary fiber contents and aviary management influence the integument and keel bone condition of pullets are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the

Molecular genotyping and subgenotyping of duck circovirus at duck farms in Thailand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ducks worldwide are infected with duck circovirus (DuCV), which causes feather abnormality, emaciation, and poor growth performance. DuCV is similar to other circoviruses that induce immunosuppression due to the occurrence of the bursae of Fabricius (BF) and spleen atrophies. In Thailand, retarded ducks with feather losses were submitted for disease investigation. The ducks presented low body weight gain, had small BF and spleens, and were consistent with duck-infected DuCV. Our study investigated the possibility of DuCV infection in duck flocks in Thailand. We also analyze

Incubation Temperature during Fetal Development Influences Morphophysiological Characteristics and Preferred Ambient Temperature of Chicken Hatchlings.

Skin and feather characteristics, which play a critical role in body temperature maintenance, can be affected by incubation circumstances, such as incubation temperature. However, no study to date has assessed the influence of incubation temperature during the fetal stage on morphometric characteristics and vascular development of the skin, feather characteristics, and their relationship to hormone levels and preferred temperature in later life in chickens. Broiler breeder eggs were exposed to low (36°C), control (37.5°C), or high (39°C) temperatures (treatments LT, CK, and HT, respectively) f

Inter-annual fluctuations in mercury contamination associated with environmental variability in two Procellariiformes species of Bass Strait, southeastern Australia.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant that biomagnifies along marine food chains, particularly exposing top predators such as seabirds through their diet. Bass Strait, in southeastern Australia, is one of the fastest warming oceanic regions on the planet and is influenced by several currents that create a highly variable physical and biological environment. Here, we studied the feather and blood Hg concentrations in two Procellariiformes species, the common diving petrel (Pelecanoides urinatrix) and the fairy prion (Pachyptila turtur) over four breeding seasons with different environmental condi

Major genes and phenotyping of indigenous chickens of the western highlands of Cameroon.

The Western highlands of Cameroon (WHC) are known for their diverse indigenous chicken phenotypes (ICW), making it difficult to report their performance and adaptability attributes accurately. A study was conducted on 828 adult ICWs sampled from the Noun and Menoua administrative divisions, representing 61% of the surface area of the WHC. The study developed a standardised method for identifying and recording the chickens' traits, including body weight, feather and appendage colour, and associated genes. Based on this data, the chickens were grouped into various "morphotypes" based on their ge

IN VITRO LIFE HISTORY OF LIPEURUS TROPICALIS (INSECTA: PHTHIRAPTERA: ISOCHNOCERA) INFESTING GALLUS GALLUS DOMESTICUS (AVES: PHASIANIDAE).

The ischnoceran louse, Lipeurus tropicalis, which normally infests Gallus gallus domesticus, was subjected to in vitro study (35 ± 1 C, 75-82% relative humidity, on a feather diet). The life table was computed, and its intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) was calculated using the data from in vitro experiments. The value of the intrinsic rate of natural growth (r) is 0.032. Given this rate, a population of L. tropicalis should double after 21.66 days, indicating that it is a moderately paced breeder.

Oh, snap! A within-wing sonation in black-tailed trainbearers.

Vertebrates communicate through a wide variety of sounds, but few mechanisms of sound production, besides vocalization, are well understood. During high-speed dives, male trainbearer hummingbirds (Lesbia spp.) produce a repeated series of loud snaps. Hypotheses for these peculiar sounds include the birds employing their elongated tails and/or striking their wings against each other. Each snap to human ears seems like a single acoustic event, but sound recordings revealed that each snap is actually a couplet of impulsive, atonal sounds produced ∼13 ms apart. Analysis of high-speed videos refute

Gyrfalcons Falco rusticolus adjust CTNS expression to food abundance: a possible contribution to cysteine homeostasis.

Melanins form the basis of animal pigmentation. When the sulphurated form of melanin, termed pheomelanin, is synthesized, the sulfhydryl group of cysteine is incorporated to the pigment structure. This may constrain physiological performance because it consumes the most important intracellular antioxidant (i.e., glutathione, GSH), of which cysteine is a constitutive amino acid. However, this may also help avoid excess cysteine, which is toxic. Pheomelanin synthesis is regulated by several genes, some of them exerting this regulation by controlling the transport of cysteine in melanocytes. We i

Cutaneous mucinosis in a strain of brown-egg laying chickens.

Cutaneous mucinosis is a cutaneous disorder described in humans, dogs, and rarely cats but never reported in birds. Twenty-six brown egg-laying chickens between ages 43 and 46 weeks had a history of feather loss, scaly, dry skin, weight loss, and decreased egg production. Microscopic findings in the skin included fragmentation of collagen bundles and interstitial, periadnexal, and perivascular dermal accumulation of wispy, mildly basophilic material that was also occasionally observed within the follicular epithelium. A moderate lymphoplasmacytic and heterophilic perivascular dermatitis was al

A novel technique for prevention of self-mutilation in three Harris' hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus).

Feather destructive behavior is an ever-increasing problem in captive birds of prey and any associated self-mutilation can be challenging to manage. This clinical report describes a noninvasive, nonpainful, temporary beak modification technique used to prevent self-mutilation in 3 Harris' hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus), when other methods and husbandry modifications had failed. The technique was successful in all 3 birds, and no adverse effects were observed. Further investigations are required to further evaluate if this beak modification technique causes any psychologic or physical stress to t

Experimental West Nile virus infection in Eastern Screech Owls (Megascops asio).

Eastern Screech Owls (EASOs) were experimentally infected with the pathogenic New York 1999 strain of West Nile virus (WNV) by subcutaneous injection or per os. Two of nine subcutaneously inoculated birds died or were euthanatized on 8 or 9 days postinfection (DPI) after <24 hr of lethargy and recumbency. All subcutaneously inoculated birds developed levels of viremia that are likely infectious to mosquitoes, with peak viremia levels ranging from 10(5.0) to 10(9.6) plaque-forming units/ml. Despite the viremia, the remaining seven birds did not display signs of illness. All birds alive beyond 5

The use of the water deprivation test for the diagnosis of apparent psychogenic polydipsia in a socially deprived African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus).

A case report is presented of primary (psychogenic) polydipsia in a pet African grey parrot. A water deprivation test was employed to test the release of arginine vasotocin and the response of the kidneys to this neurohypophyseal hormone. After a diagnosis was made water restriction resulted in the disappearance of clinical signs. It seems that psychogenic polydipsia, like feather picking, is a neurosis resulting from social deprivation.
