SHOULD PEDIATRICIANS INVESTIGATE THE SYMPTOMS OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER IN CHILDREN WITH FEEDING DIFFICULTIES?

OBJECTIVE: To review current evidence on the relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder and feeding difficulties. METHODS: Review the Science Direct and PubMed databases between 2007 and 2017 in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The search terms, used in association, were "obsessive compulsive disorder" and "picky eating/feeding difficulty". Cohort, case control and cross sectional studies were included that analyzed children, adolescents and/or adults of any sample size from any country in the world. Opinion articles were excluded. RESULTS: Around 245 articles were selected, and only

The genetics of chemoreception in the labella and tarsi of Aedes aegypti.

The yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti is a major vector of human diseases, such as dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and West Nile viruses. Chemoreceptor organs on the labella and tarsi are involved in human host evaluation and thus serve as potential foci for the disruption of blood feeding behavior. In addition to host detection, these contact chemoreceptors mediate feeding, oviposition and conspecific recognition; however, the molecular landscape of chemoreception in these tissues remains mostly uncharacterized. Here we report the expression profile of all putative chemoreception genes in…

Transcriptomic and Proteomic Analyses of the Liver and Ileum Identify Key Genes and Pathways Associated with Low and High Groups of Social Genetic Effect of Residual Feed Intake.

Social genetic effects (SGEs) refer to how the genotypes of other individuals impact an individual's phenotype within a population. These effects significantly influence the feeding behavior and production performance in pigs, though their mechanisms are not well understood. This study examined two pig groups with extreme SGE values for residual feed intake (RFI), analyzing their feeding behavior and the molecular mechanisms involved using transcriptomics and proteomics analysis of liver and ileum tissues. Pigs with higher SGE values exhibited distinct feeding patterns, spending more time at t…

Antinociceptive effect following dietary-induced thiamine deficiency in mice: involvement of substance P and somatostatin.

We produced thiamine deficiency by treating mice with a thiamine deficient (TD) diet, but not with pyrithiamine, a thiamine antagonist. Twenty days after TD feeding, a significant antinociceptive effect was observed in the formalin test. A single injection of thiamine HCl (50 mg/kg, s.c.) on the 19th day after TD feeding (on the late TD stage) failed to reverse the antinociceptive effect, the muricide effect, and impairment of avoidance learning induced by TD feeding, as compared to pair-fed controls. These results indicate the possibility that the TD-induced antinociceptive effect may result

Decoding individual dairy cow behavioral profiles through electronic feeder and drinker data.

Individual animals can differ considerably in how they feed, drink, and compete for resources, yet much data analysis still relies on group-level comparisons that obscure these individual differences. Electronic feeding and drinking systems make it possible to characterize individual behavioral profiles within groups. Using 107 lactating Holstein dairy cows tracked over 207 d, we extracted 16 behavioral variables from electronic feed bin and water bin data, capturing conventional metrics (feeding and drinking intake, duration and meal frequency) alongside measures of non-nutritive visits, soci

Unsuccessful foragers acquire social information through group departure and travel in penguins.

Colonial animals are theoretically expected to use social information to reduce uncertainty regarding food location and quality; however, few empirical studies have investigated how they acquire and when they rely on such information. Here, we simultaneously tracked 96-116 breeding Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae), corresponding to 35.6-43.0% of active breeders in a colony, across 653 foraging trips, and examined their movement decisions. We found that foraging site selection was most often predicted by individuals' own previous space use, but in 17.1% of trips, it was better predicted by

Invited review: Transitioning from milk to solid feed in dairy heifers.

Calves are born with a physically and metabolically underdeveloped rumen and initially rely on milk to meet nutrient demands for maintenance and growth. Initiation of solid feed consumption, acquisition of anaerobic microbes, establishment of rumen fermentation, expansion of rumen in volume, differentiation and growth of papillae, development of absorption and metabolic pathways, maturation of salivary apparatus and development of rumination behavior are all needed as the calf shifts from dependence on milk to solid feed. In nature and some production systems (e.g., most beef calves), young ru

Dietary Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Induces Satiation by Enhancing the Postprandial Activation of Vagal Afferent Nerves.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is present in the mammalian brain as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter and in foods. It is widely used as a supplement that regulates brain function through stress-reducing and sleep-enhancing effects. However, its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, as it is reportedly unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. Here, we explored whether a single peroral administration of GABA affects feeding behavior as an evaluation of brain function and the involvement of vagal afferent nerves. Peroral GABA at 20 and 200 mg/kg immediately before refeeding suppress…

Bowhead whale foraging dives are defined by speed and body orientation.

Quantifying the time baleen whales spend foraging is central to understanding the extent to which climate driven shifts in low-trophic prey may affect energy acquisition. To date, the most comprehensive understanding of balaenid (bowhead and right whale) feeding behavior comes from studies using inertial sensing tags (biologgers). Here, periods of ram filtration were inferred under predictable foraging conditions where whales targeted a deep, diapausing prey layer. However, foraging conditions are increasingly variable in high latitudes and zooplankton vertical distribution, abundance and biom…

Fibrinopeptide A-induced blood-feeding arrest in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Female mosquitoes engage in blood feeding from their hosts to facilitate egg maturation but cease feeding once a sufficient blood meal has been acquired. Abdominal distention has been proposed as a contributing factor; however, it has also been suggested that there are chemical controls. In this study, we focus on negative chemical regulators of blood feeding, particularly those present in the host blood. Serum derived from animal blood inhibits the feeding of ATP, a phagostimulant of blood feeding in Aedes aegypti. Fibrinopeptide A (FPA), a 16-amino acid peptide cleaved from fibrinogen during

Evaluating the potential role of tryptophan in calf milk replacers to facilitate weaning.

Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that participates in the control of the affective state of an animal. We hypothesized that Trp supplementation could help dairy calves to cope with weaning stress. Twenty-seven Holstein male calves (48 ± 0.8 d old; 82 ± 2.6 kg of body weight) were used to evaluate the effects of Trp supplementation at a rate of 4.5 g/d via milk replacer (MR) on performance and behavioral parameters around weaning. All calves received the same feeding program (6 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 1 to 7, 4 L/d at 15% dry matter from d 8 to 14, and 2 L/d at 15

Effects of stocking density on behavior, productivity, and comfort indices of lactating dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different stocking densities of 82 (0.82 cows per freestall and feed bin), 100 … 2% stocking density during peak feeding time (0600-0800 h), determined based on diurnal patterns of feeding behavior. Stocking density had no effect on rumination time, milk yield and milk composition. Rapamycin Alters the Feeding Preference for Amino Acids and Sugar in Female Drosophila.

Rapamycin has demonstrated significant lifespan-extending effects across a variety of model organisms, positioning it as one of the most promising antiaging agents currently under investigation. Nonetheless, chronic administration of rapamycin may induce diverse adverse reactions, primarily due to its influence on energy metabolism. Here, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model, we show that rapamycin significantly alters feeding behaviors in a dose-dependent manner. Specifically, both long-term and short-term administration of the optimal life-extending dose of rapamycin decreases the protei…

CRF-deficient mice respond like wild-type mice to hypophagic stimuli.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) has been implicated in physiological processes associated with stress, including changes in feeding behavior. Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of CRF and urocortin have been shown to depress feeding, and antagonism of CRF receptors has been reported to attenuate hypophagic responses to many treatments, suggesting that brain CRF may mediate these responses. We have now studied feeding behavior of mice lacking the CRF gene (CRFko), comparing them to wild-type (CRFwt) mice. Feeding was assessed in nondeprived mice by measuring the intake of sweeten…

Group differences in binge eating, impulsivity, and intuitive and mindful eating among intermittent fasters and non-fasters.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an increasingly popular diet involving short-term fasting and/or caloric restriction. While published research highlights physiological effects (e.g., weight, body fat) of IF, hardly any research has examined its associations with psychological factors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between IF and binge eating, impulsivity, intuitive eating, and mindful eating. An undergraduate sample (N = 298) was recruited through a large southwestern university psychology subject pool. The sample was divided into three groups based on IF status: Current IF (n
