The platelet-type thrombin receptor was expressed by large granular lymphocytes (LGLs) in a variety of proliferative diseases. Twenty patients with LGL proliferative disease were examined, including five T cell clones and a variety of polyclonal proliferations, some secondary to rheumatoid arthritis and Felty's syndrome; 17/20 showed high number of CD3+, CD8+, and CD57+ lymphocytes and 9/20 also had high numbers of CD16+ or CD 56+ positive lymphocytes. We describe the first case of chronic neutropenia of 17 years' duration following gold therapy in a 53-year-old woman given a 1-g course of gold therapy in 1965 for treatment of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. Although she had a good response to the gold therapy, her originally normal leukocyte count fell to 1.2 x 10(9)/L. OBJECTIVES: To characterise RA in a sample of Spanish patients by estimating mean clinical activity, functional ability, and radiological damage, and current and cumulative prevalence of extra-articular manifestations.
METHODS: Cross sectional analysis of a cohort of patients with RA randomly selected from the clinical databases of 34 centres. Standard definitions and measurements were used, and radiographs read centrally. Estimates and confidence intervals were adjusted to sampling.

The frequencies of HLA-A, -B, -C, DR and MT lymphocyte alloantigens in clinical and serologic subsets of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were determined in 65 Caucasian patients with definite or classical disease and compared to frequencies observed in normal individuals. The elevation in frequency of several antigens controlled by different genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) suggested that combinations of antigens may be associated with RA. We examined the levels of TcR delta 1+ T cells (total gamma delta T cell) and delta TCS1+ (gamma delta T cell subset) T cells in the peripheral blood (PB) and synovial fluid (SF) of 16 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and compared them to the levels in PB of patients with Felty's syndrome (FS) and 21 healthy control subjects (NML). This prospective study documents the haematological responses in 300 rheumatoid patients (RA) treated with sulphasalazine (SASP) for between 1 and 9 years. It also examines the effect of SASP on the total white cell and platelet counts over 2 years in relation to disease activity in 80 RA patients. Neutropenia occurred in six (2%) (three severe--neutrophil count less than 0.8 X 10(9)/l) after 3 and 12 weeks. This study examines the role of plasma lactoferrin in the assessment of neutropenia. In particular, we have studied lactoferrin as an inhibitor of granulopoiesis and as an indicator of the size of the total blood granulocyte pool (TBGP). Plasma lactoferrin concentration was determined in a heterogeneous group of 30 patients with neutropenia.
