Massive fetomaternal hemorrhage has been associated with numerous risk factors and can occur spontaneously. The risk is probably greater when a woman who is Rh negative has an ABO-compatible fetus. We report the case of a gravid, A-negative unsensitized patient who came to the hospital at term complaining of decreased fetal movement over the previous 24 hours. During evaluation, the fetal heart rate was found to have decreased beat-to-beat variability and repetitive late decelerations, and the mother was delivered of a 3,005 gA-positive neonate (by cesarean section) with a hemoglobin level of …

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, fetoplacental thromboembolism has been described only in autopsy specimens. We report the antepartum diagnosis of an umbilical artery occlusion and neonatal diagnosis of an aortic thrombus and placental emboli.
CASE: A gravida at 31 weeks' gestation was referred for evaluation of decreased fetal movement and an enlarged fetal bladder. A two-vessel umbilical cord with a collapsed, echogenic third vessel was noted, whereas views of a normal three-vessel cord were available from an examination 5 weeks earlier. A positive oxytocin contraction test prompted delivery. …

A fetal arrhythmia was detected in a pregnant woman. Fetal Doppler-echocardiography did not reveal cardiac structural alterations; the Doppler flow velocity recordings at the level of the left ventricular outflow tract revealed the continuous succession of three cardiac cycles: a prolonged cycle (456 +/- 6 ms, mean of five measurements), a medium duration cycle (428 +/- 4 ms) and a short cycle (296 +/- 4 ms) after which the prolonged cycle repeated. Identification of the late ventricle filling phase of the atrial systole in the Doppler flow velocity waveform during the long and medium duration

BACKGROUND: Clinical and experimental evidence shows lung fluid volume as a modulator of fetal lung growth with important value in treating fetal lung hypoplasia. Thus, understanding the mechanisms underlying these morphological dynamics has been the topic of multiple investigations with, however, limited results, partially due to the difficulty of capturing or recapitulating these movements in the lab. In this sense, this study aims to establish an ex vivo model allowing the study of lung fluid function in branching morphogenesis and identify the subsequent molecular/ cellular mechanisms.

Previous studies have demonstrated that children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) exhibit deficits in measures of eye movement control that probe aspects of visuospatial processing and working memory. The goal of the present study was to examine, in a large cohort of children with FASD, prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) but not FASD, and typically developing control children, the relationship between performance in eye movement tasks and standardized psychometric tests that assess visuospatial processing and working memory. Participants for this dataset were drawn from a large, multi-

A 3-month-old female infant is reported with upper spinal cord injury at birth. Breech presentation and hyperextension of head were observed 1 week prior to delivery. She was delivered by elective cesarean section. The absence of fetal movements 1 day prior to delivery and the uneventful cesarean section strongly suggest a spinal cord injury in utero secondary to hyperextension of the neck.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a set of developmental malformations caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), the strongest manifestation of FASD, results in short stature, microcephally and facial dysmorphogenesis including microphthalmia. Using Xenopus embryos as a model developmental system, we show that ethanol exposure recapitulates many aspects of FAS, including a shortened rostro-caudal axis, microcephally and microphthalmia. Temporal analysis revealed that Xenopus embryos are most sensitive to ethanol exposure between late blastula and ear

Fetal state organization reflects the development of the central nervous system but may also portend individual differences in postnatal state organization. The goal of the present study was to determine the extent to which fetal state regulation, defined as the percentage of an observation period in which fetal heart rate and movement concordance was displayed, is associated with neonatal state regulation. Neonatal state regulation was evaluated through a standard neurobehavioral assessment at 2 weeks postpartum. Biobehavioral concordance was measured in 52 normally developing fetuses at 24,

Recent technological developments in three-dimensional (3D) printing have created new opportunities for applications in clinical medicine. 3D printing has been adopted for teaching and planning complicated surgeries, including maxillofacial, orthopedic reconstructions, and airway manipulation for one-lung ventilation or airway stenting. We present here the first use of such technology to print a model from in utero imaging for intrapartum treatment planning. A 32-week fetus presented with congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (CHAOS) due to a large cervical lymphatic malformation. An ex

Fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS) and lethal multiple pterygium syndrome (LMPS) are clinically overlapping syndromes manifesting with reduced or absent fetal movement, arthrogryposis, and several anomalies during fetal life. The etiology of these syndromes is heterogeneous, and in many cases it remains unknown. In order to determine the genetic etiology of FADS in two fetuses with fetal akinesia, arthrogryposis, edema, and partial cleft palate, we utilized exome sequencing. Our investigations revealed a homozygous nonsense variant [c.1116C>A, p.(Cys372Ter)] in the SLC18A3 gene, which …

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of the rapid biophysical profile (rBPP), which uses sound-provoked, ultrasonographically detected fetal movement and amniotic fluid index, for early intrapartum fetal well-being assessment and prediction of adverse perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: Rapid BPP was performed in 330 women admitted to the labor unit of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Chiang Mai, Thailand, from January 2005 to July 2005. Those who were delivered later than 24h after the rBPP, or who required emergency cesarean section because of placenta previa, abruptio placentae or prolapsed co…

This paper reviews recent evidence from epidemiological, follow-up and experimental studies that sub-optimal conditions during gestation can cause alterations in respiratory function that persist during postnatal life. Several studies indicate that placental insufficiency, which can be associated with fetal substrate deprivation, hypoxia and low birthweight, may be followed by evidence of respiratory compromise in later life. Similarly, it is becoming evident that maternal smoking affects fetal lung development and that the effects can persist into postnatal life. A reduced period of fetal dev

Intrauterine extremity gangrene in combination with cerebral infarction is a serious and rare event. We present a case with a healthy mother who gave birth to a child with this condition. At term, the mother presented at the antenatal clinic with decreased fetal movements. Cardiotocography (CTG) showed signs of fetal distress and a caesarean section was performed. The left arm of the newborn was found gangrenous. Amputation of the arm was necessary and the child was subsequently treated with anticoagulant therapy due to thrombosis and cerebral infarction in the left hemisphere found by magneti…

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypoxemia is a common cause of fetal growth restriction and can have significant effects on the developing fetal lung. Maternal antioxidant treatment in hypoxic pregnancy protects against offspring cardiovascular dysfunction. The effects of antenatal antioxidants on lung development in the chronically hypoxic growth restricted fetus is unknown.
METHODS: We investigated the effect of maternal daily Vitamin C (200 mg/kg i.v. vs. Saline) for a month in late gestation on molecular markers regulating lung maturation between normoxic normally grown and hypoxic growth-restricted

Routine anatomic ultrasound performed in the second trimester has a detection rate of approximately 70-90% for fetal congenital abnormalities (Nyberg and Souter, J Ultrasound Med 2001;6:655-674). The central nervous system abnormalities are one of the most common ones detected. Chiari malformation is among the CNS abnormalities diagnosed in the fetal period (Bianchi et al., Fetology - diagnosis and management of the fetal patient, McGraw-Hill, 2000). The Arnold-Chiari malformation was first described in 1883 by Cleland (Romero et al., Prenatal diagnosis of congenital anomalies, Appleton and La
