Protection from annual flooding is correlated with increased cholera prevalence in Bangladesh: a zero-inflated regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alteration of natural or historical aquatic flows can have unintended consequences for regions where waterborne diseases are endemic and where the epidemiologic implications of such change are poorly understood. The implementation of flood protection measures for a portion of an intensely monitored population in Matlab, Bangladesh, allows us to examine whether cholera outcomes respond positively or negatively to measures designed to control river flooding. METHODS: Using a zero inflated negative binomial model, we examine how selected covariates can simultaneously account for hous

[Antibodies against mosquito-born viruses in human population of an area of Central Bohemia affected by the flood of 2002].

In the Central-Bohemian area affected by the flood of 2002, 497 residents were screened for antibodies against the mosquito-borne viruses Tahyna (TAHV), West Nile (WNV), Sindbis (SINV) and Batai (BATV; syn. Calovo) using the haemagglutination-inhibition (HIT) and plaque-reduction neutralization (PRNT) tests. Blood samples were collected in September 2002 when the mosquito populations showed the maximum density following the flood. Antibodies against TAHV (16.5% persons in PRNT, 14.9% in HIT), SINV (1.4% in HIT) and BATV (1.4% in HIT, 0.2% in PRNT) were detected. Although 6.8% and 1.2% of the s

Egg hatching of Aedes mosquitoes during successive floodings in a Rift Valley fever endemic area in Kenya.

Floodwater Aedes breeding habitats in central Kenya were sequentially flooded to determine the numbers of mosquito eggs hatching during each flooding. Approximately 90% of the larvae sampled during 4 floodings emerged during the initial flooding. The number of Aedes eggs hatching during the second flooding was lowest of all 4 floodings, and no significant differences in the amount of egg hatching during floodings 3 and 4 were seen. Unhatched Aedes eggs were present in soil samples collected after the final flooding. The possible implications of these findings with regard to Rift Valley fever v

Optimization of Polymer-Flooding Parameters and Front Propagation Behavior in the Central-Western Block I of the Lanan District.

To clarify the propagation behavior of the polymer-flooding front in highly heterogeneous, high-water-cut reservoirs, polymer-system screening, plugging-performance evaluation, and one-dimensional and three-dimensional saturation-monitoring displacement experiments were conducted for the central-western Block I of the Lanan District. The results showed that both HPAM-1 and HPAM-2 exhibited good viscosity-enhancing performance and injectability. The 2,000 mg/L HPAM-2 system exhibited the best plugging performance in the high-permeability layer, with a plugging rate of 80.5%, effectively mitigat

Water quality disruptions following an extreme flood: Microbial and geochemical responses to the 2024 DANA in a Mediterranean wetland.

In late October 2024, an extreme Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) caused widespread flooding and the failure of wastewater treatment and sewerage systems across several municipalities in the Valencia region (Spain). A six-month monitoring program was conducted in Albufera Natural Park and the Poyo and Picassent gullies. Microbiological fecal indicators (Escherichia coli, somatic coliphages, and viral markers) showed an immediate response to the flooding, indicating substantial inputs of untreated wastewater. Although most indicators declined over time, several remained above pre-event

Enhancing urban flood risk assessment: A PCA-integrated deep learning surrogate for hazard and damage prediction.

This study proposes an integrated deep-learning framework for rapid urban flood hazard mapping and damage prediction from compact rainfall descriptors. A simulation-based reference database linked synthetic rainfall scenarios with grid-based flood-depth maps generated by a validated rainfall-runoff and inundation model and category-specific damage indicators derived from damage assessment. For hazard mapping, a principal component analysis-integrated deep neural network predicted retained component scores and reconstructed full inundation maps through inverse transformation. For damage predict

Feeding ecology of an Amazonian electric knifefish under altered flood-pulse dynamics caused by hydroelectric damming.

This study evaluated the effects of the controlled flood pulse on diet composition, trophic niche breadth and feeding intensity of Archolaemus janeae, an electric knifefish species with a restricted distribution in the Amazon Basin. Monthly samples were collected from December 2020 to November 2021 in the Volta Grande stretch of the Xingu River, and stomach contents of 134 specimens were analysed. The diet was predominantly composed of aquatic insect larvae, with a notable occurrence of terrestrial plant fragments. Hydrological variation affected diet composition, trophic niche breadth and fee

Stress Priming Enhances Tolerance Mechanisms in Rice Species (Oryza sativa and O. glaberrima) under Flooding.

African rice faces flooding, leading to hypoxia, which triggers the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. Stress priming involves subjecting a plant to mild stress to enhance its tolerance to abiotic stress. This study examined the physiological, biochemical, and anatomical responses of two rice species, Oryza glaberrima (CG 14) and Oryza sativa (FARO 44), under various flooding conditions. The treatments included plants exposed to flooding stress once (FS1) and plants subjected to flood-priming (FP) treatments. Phenotypically, CG 14 and FARO 44 respond to flooding thro

Impact of land surface characteristics on coastal compound flooding using a coupled hydrodynamic-hydraulic modelling framework.

Compound flooding (CF) in any deltaic region is caused by complex interactions between storm tides, river discharge, and precipitation, in which the impact of land-surface parameters is often undetermined. A coupled hydraulic HEC-RAS and hydrodynamic ADCIRC model is used to examine how land surface characteristics affect CF during the Yaas cyclone. The model includes Brahmani, Baitarani, Subarnarekha, and Mahanadi river systems along the east coast of India. CF is estimated using IMDAA, ERA5, GPM precipitation, evaporation, along soil infiltration. Validation with satellite imagery suggests th

Anaerobic Biodegradation of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) under Flooded Paddy Soil Conditions.

Plastic pollution in aquatic environments has become a global concern, and agricultural plastics are one potential source. Biodegradable plastics have been developed as an alternative; however, their degradation behavior under flooded soil conditions remains unclear. Therefore, we herein investigated the degradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH), a biodegradable polymer, using an in vitro system simulating paddy soil environments. Microcosm experiments were conducted under different temperatures (14, 25, and 35°C) and soil-water ratios (1:1, 1:10, 1:100, and 1:1,000)

Deep learning completes US flood hazard maps revealing millions exposed to previously unrecognized risk.

Flood maps are essential for disaster preparedness, insurance and climate adaptation, yet US official maps cover only one-third of river channels. Here we present a deep-learning framework that learns from existing records to produce a spatially complete 30-m flood hazard map for the contiguous US, filling unmapped regions and updating legacy extents. We estimate that the 2023 national database omits 11 million people and 4.1 million buildings in flood zones, adding 69% and 81% beyond the official baseline respectively. Crucially, our socioeconomic analysis of 917 cities reveals that entirely

A multi-scale ensemble machine learning framework for assessing human-elephant conflict in the Brahmaputra flood plain.

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is emerging as a growing challenge to biodiversity conservation and rural livelihoods in Asia. Assam's Brahmaputra Flood Plain (BFP)is an important stronghold of the Asian elephant, wherein this study aims to comprehensively analyse the spatio-temporal dynamics of human-elephant conflict BFP, between 2010 and 2024. Using a two-way conflict modelling framework, we examined both human victimization of elephants (EV-HI) and elephant victimization of humans (HV-EI), and integrated these perspectives to identify spatial intersections and temporal patterns of heightened

A novel framework for urban flood risk assessment integrating probabilistic hazard occurrence and urban environmental response.

Urban flood (UF) risk assessment provides a geographical perspective for addressing threats to urban development and public safety. Although the Hazard-Exposure-Vulnerability (H-E-V) framework is widely used, ambiguous boundaries between Exposure and Vulnerability and unreasonable coupled risk-value distributions may weaken the credibility of spatiotemporal risk representation. To address these issues, this study proposes an optimized urban flood risk (UFR) method oriented toward the hazard-forming process and disaster-bearing environment (DBE) of UF, which clarifies the definitions and quanti

Soil flooding suppresses Fusarium wilt in watermelon by modulating soil chemical properties and microbial community richness.

Soil flooding is a well-documented agricultural practice for disease control, but the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of soil flooding on watermelon growth, soil chemical properties, enzyme activities, and the diversity and richness of microbial community structure, and to examine the relationships between these factors and wilt incidence. The results showed that soil flooding reduced the population of FON and Fusarium wilt incidence, promoted plant growth, increased soil AP and AK contents, increased UA and ALPA acti

Large-scale toxic bloom of Dinophysis acuminata complex following a major flood disaster in southern Brazil.

Dinophysis species are the main producers of diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) in the Southwestern Atlantic, where recurrent blooms frequently lead to shellfish harvesting bans. In 2024, an extreme rainfall event over Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil, caused one of the most severe floods ever recorded in the country, and generated an anomalous freshwater discharge through the Patos Lagoon estuary. The resulting low-salinity plume spread northward along the southern Brazilian coast, reaching aquaculture areas hundreds of kilometers away from the estuary. Here, we integrate hydrological…

Significant greenhouse gas emissions from flooded drylands in Kati Thanda Lake Eyre basin in Australia.

Drylands cover 40–50% of the Earth’s surface and make an important contribution to the terrestrial carbon sink and the global carbon cycle. However, in addition to extended dry periods, drylands also experience extreme flood events. Here we report carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from flooded drylands in central Australia (Kati-Thanda-Lake-Eyre basin; KTLE) in 2019. At the time of sampling the wet areas of the KTLE emitted 1.4 ± 0.6 Tg CO2 d− 1 and 0.31 ± 0.13 Gg CH4 d− 1 (24.6 ± 10.6 Gg CO2e) and consumed 3.0 ± 1.3 Mg N2O d− 1 (0.8 ± 0.4 Gg CO2e). The low

A numerical and experimental approach to oil recovery performances during combined xanthan gum and carbon dioxide flooding.

Carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) offers dual benefits of increasing hydrocarbon production and sequestering anthropogenic CO2; however, conventional CO2 flooding suffers from unfavorable mobility ratios and premature gas breakthrough, while polymer flooding alone faces challenges in high-salinity and high-temperature reservoirs. This study experimentally and numerically investigates the synergistic impact of combining xanthan gum polymer with CO2 injection to maximize oil recovery. We conducted laboratory coreflood experiments on packed sandstone (porosity 22%, permeability 1000

Multi-criteria decision-making under comparison: benchmarking and optimal model selection for flood susceptibility mapping.

Flood is one of the predominant natural hazards, inducing catastrophic impacts on lives, structures, and agriculture in low-elevated and riverine areas like Feni, Bangladesh, highly susceptible to flooding (flash and riverine floods), amplified by intense and prolonged rainfall in the monsoon. This study aims to assess flood-causing factors, risk profile by susceptibility maps, contrasting multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) models, and sensitivity analysis for the Feni district. The novel aspect includes a comparison of eight MCDM models (subjective, objective, and ranking-based) for flood …

Sustaining lifesaving care: Tactical infrastructural adaptations for clinics in low-resource settings during severe flooding.

We present a number of suggestions that will ensure continuity of medical care services at tropical clinics in situations where isolation is caused by frequent massive floods and lack of electricity. We demonstrate how the move from resource-limited triage will be achieved through the use of manual instruments, heat-stable drugs and community task-shifting in order to address trauma, emergency delivery and sepsis.
