Health impact of supplying safe drinking water containing fluoride below permissible level on flourosis patients in a fluoride-endemic rural area of West Bengal.

BACKGROUND: The problem of high fluoride concentration in groundwater resources has become one of the most important toxicological and geo-environmental issues in India. Excessive fluoride in drinking water causes dental and skeletal fluorosis, which is encountered in endemic proportions in several parts of the world. World Health Organization (WHO) guideline value and the permissible limit of fluoride as per Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) is 1.5 mg/L. About 20 states of India, including 43 blocks of seven districts of West Bengal, were identified as endemic for fluorosis and about 66 million

Topical iodine and fluoride varnish combined is more effective than fluoride varnish alone for protecting erupting first permanent molars: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This communication examines the combined effect of topical polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP)-iodine plus fluoride varnish in the prevention of tooth decay in erupting first permanent molars in an ongoing public health program. METHODS: The evaluation employed a retrospective cohort design with two groups of children 60-83 months. Cohort 1 (2004-05) received three times per school year topical fluoride varnish, and Cohort 2 (2008-09) received topical application of 10 percent PVP-iodine followed at each visit with topical fluoride varnish. The children were examined clinically at the begin

The effect of cessation of drinking water fluoridation on dental restorations and crowns in children aged 3-5 years in Israel - a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Community water fluoridation began in the 1945 as a public health measure to prevent and control caries and was implemented in Israel in 1981. Community water fluoridation reduced caries significantly, but in 2014, the Ministry of Health decided to stop Community water fluoridation in Israel. The aim of our study was to examine the effect of fluoridation cessation on the dental health of children aged 3-5, treated in "Assuta Tel Aviv" dental clinics, under general anesthesia or deep sedation. METHODS: The computerized Maccabi-Dent database provided data for this retrospective stud…

Comparison of surface roughness of root cementum and orthodontically induced root resorption craters from high- and low-fluoridation areas: a 3D confocal microscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride has a major role in strengthening the structure of enamel against acids. Despite differences between caries and root resorption processes, both events inherently involve acidic dissolution of dental tissues. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of water fluoridation levels on the surface roughness of root cementum and resorption craters. The findings provided more insight into the influence of fluoride on the surfaces of intact cementum surface and resorption craters. METHODS: Twenty-eight orthodontic patients were recruited from two cities in Turke…

The Benefits of Fluoride: Addressing Public Concern and Supporting Topical Use.

The introduction of fluoride in drinking water to reduce the incidence of dental caries, once hailed as a major public health success, has recently come under scrutiny. In August 2024, a monograph from the National Toxicology Program (NTP) reported that fluoride at levels above 1.5 mg/L is associated with reduced intelligence quotient (IQ) in children. In September 2024, a US district judge required that the Environmental Protection Agency take action regarding the "unreasonable risk" posed by fluoride in drinking water. In May 2025, the Food and Drug Administration initiated efforts to remove

Mechanochemical Degradation and Fluoride Recovery of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer Membrane.

Per- or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a large family of chemicals, widely used due to their outstanding properties. However, also known as "Forever Chemicals", they are raising attention due to high health and environmental risks. In last years, the elimination, degradation, or recycling of PFAS has become essential. In this work, the degradation of a perfluorosulfonic acid polymer, Nafion, composed of a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) backbone with perfluoroether side chains terminated by sulfonic acid groups, is studied. More precisely, the mechanochemical degradation, previously des

Synthesis of glycosyl chlorides and fluorides via a mild chlorination strategy.

A convenient and practical approach for glycosyl chloride synthesis has been developed using benzene-1,3-disulfonyl chloride as a mild and efficient chlorinating reagent. Employing this method, we successfully synthesized a wide range of glycosyl chlorides, including both armed and disarmed mono- and disaccharides. The protocol was further extended to a one-pot synthesis of glycosyl fluorides via in-situ generation of glycosyl chlorides intermediate using AgBF4 as a fluoride source. This versatile synthetic strategy offers straightforward access to a wide range of O- and N-glycosides in good t

Fluoride as a Modifier of Metallome Homeostasis: A Systematic Review of Animal Studies.

Fluoride is widely used for caries prevention due to its effects on mineralized tissues, yet its potential role as a modifier of systemic metal homeostasis remains insufficiently explored. This systematic review synthesizes preclinical evidence on the association between fluoride exposure and changes in metal and semi-metal concentrations across biological matrices. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted across major databases without language or date restrictions, following SyRF, CAMARADES and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Thirty-one animal studies were included, encompassing multiple specie

Fluoride-Catalyzed Fluoroacetylation of Alcohols, Thioalcohols, and Nitrogen-Containing Compounds.

The strained C-N bond of fluoroacetamides was activated by fluoride to form acyl fluoride, thereby enabling mild O-, S-, N-fluoroacetylation. The reaction of alcohols, thioalcohols, and nitrogen-containing compounds with N-phenyl-N-tosylfluoroacetamides proceeded smoothly in the presence of a fluoride catalyst to provide α-fluorinated esters, thioesters, and amides in satisfactory to excellent yields at ambient temperature. The potential of this mild fluoroacetylation is highlighted by large-scale synthesis and late-stage diversification of chiral and medicinally relevant molecules.

Molecules Targeting EriCF1 Increase Streptococcus mutans Fluoride Sensitivity.

Dental caries, as one of the prevalent oral infectious diseases worldwide, constitutes a considerable disease burden. Fluoride has been widely used to prevent dental caries for decades. However, fluoride alone may not always be sufficient. The major cariogenic bacterial species, Streptococcus mutans, has not been effectively controlled by daily fluoride exposure, possibly because it has a detoxification mechanism. Studies have shown that most microorganisms have fluoride exporters dedicated to exporting fluoride ions (F-). S. mutans possesses 2 homologous genes, eriCF1 and eriCF2, which encode

Alkyl Fluoride Synthesis via Cu-Mediated Deacetylative Fluorination.

Given the increasing demand for diverse alkyl fluorides for various applications, it would be beneficial to enrich the fluorination toolbox by including more kinds of common functional groups, such as ketones, as fluoride surrogates. Here we report a Cu-mediated deacylative fluorination approach that can convert a wide range of methyl ketones to the corresponding alkyl fluorides. The reaction is enabled by a ketone activation reagent and a nucleophilic fluoride source. It features broad functional group tolerance, capability for the late-stage fluorination, fluoro-annulation, synthesis of α,α-

Fluoride Exposure Modulates Skeletal Development and Mineralization in Zebrafish Larvae.

The presence of high levels of fluoride (F) in groundwater is a major issue worldwide. Although F is essential for healthy teeth and bones, excessive exposure can cause fluorosis or F toxicity. This condition primarily affects the hard tissues due to their high F retention capacity. F accumulation alters bone formation and resorption mechanisms interfering with mineral homeostasis and eventually manifests as skeletal fluorosis. Albeit the numerous studies on skeletal fluorosis, the effect of F on developmental osteogenesis is inconclusive. In light of this, we studied the effect of F on osteog
