In this article, we present an unusual case of a young boy who presented with abdominal pain and was found to have a sewing needle that had migrated through the abdominal wall into the peritoneal space. After imaging and endoscopy, the needle was extracted laparoscopically without any evidence of intra-abdominal organ injury and with a good long-term outcome for the child. There are no other such reported cases in the literature. This case highlights the subtleties in management of intra-abdominal foreign bodies in children including rare causes such noningested foreign bodies.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric or intestinal foreign bodies may cause heterogeneous symptoms ranging from asymptomatic conditions to chronic pain and, in some cases, occlusion and/or perforation. There are sporadic reports of intraluminal migration of medical devices. Most commonly they are sponges, hernia meshes, gastrotomy tubes, while surgical drains are very rarely reported.
METHODS: A 79 year-old female who consulted our department in May 2009 for abdominal pain and constipation. Her symptomatology started in 2006 some months after an anterior resection for sigmoid diverticulitis associated to ob

BACKGROUND: A bronchial fistula is a relatively rare and potentially fatal complication after lung transplantation. Thoracic surgeons and pulmonologists often face challenges when selecting treatment options. We herein report an exceptional case of intrabronchial migration of a nonabsorbable hemostatic agent, which had been placed around the pulmonary artery at the time of lung transplantation, through a bronchial fistula.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man developed respiratory distress 1 year after left single-lung transplantation for idiopathic interstitial pneumonia. Bronchoscopic exami

INTRODUCTION: Orbital organic foreign bodies are rare and can present different clinical features. The objective of this report is to show the danger of this type of foreign body, present the imaging data, and suggest a diagnostic approach and therapeutic management. We describe three cases of orbital organic foreign bodies with three different clinical presentations.
CASE REPORTS: The first case was a 43-year-old male complaining of a chronic cutaneous fistula of the inferior right eyelid lasting 4 months after an orbital trauma with a wooden object. Two surgeries were necessary to extract t

Bladder foreign bodies (BFBs) are an uncommon clinical occurrence, often resulting from trauma, self-insertion, iatrogenic causes, or organ migration. These objects can act as nidus for stone formation, leading to vesicolithiasis. Here, we present a rare case of a 61-year-old male with hematuria, dysuria, and abdominal pain. Initial evaluation, including imaging and cystoscopy, revealed a bladder stone encapsulating a foreign object identified as a blue cable wire. Despite denying self-insertion, his history suggested potential unreported trauma. Management involved cystoscopic lithotripsy and

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this retrospective study was to explore the clinical characteristics of and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for the removal of fish bones that migrate to the neck.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical data of 30 patients over the past 12 years who underwent neck surgery in our otorhinolaryngology department for the migration of fish bones from the throat. The location of fish bones and the positivity rate of different examination methods (neck CT and B-ultrasound) were evaluated statistically. The diagnosis and treatment strategy for fish bone migration to the neck w

Displacement of dental implants into the maxillary sinus is not an uncommon event in implant dentistry and may lead to serious complications, such as sinusitis. To avoid systemic problems, performing the removal of the foreign body as soon as possible is suggested. Despite the fact that early implants dislocation has been reported several times, late migration into maxillary sinus has been described by just a few studies. The purpose of this study was to report a rare case of dental implant migration into maxillary sinus after 12 years of function. A 61-year-old woman came to our attention in

Biliary stents are commonly used for strictures and obstruction, but can migrate distally in up to 20% of cases. While most are identified early, some remain silent for years before presenting with complications. We describe a rare case of a biliary stent that migrated and remained undetected for over 70 years in an 89-year-old woman with a history of cholecystectomy and common bile duct stenting in the 1950s. She presented with acute abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Labs showed leukocytosis, renal dysfunction, and elevated alkaline phosphatase. Computed tomography imaging revealed small

OBJECTIVES: Long-term retained foreign bodies in the human body have been reported across many specialties, but relatively few exist in the ENT literature.
PATIENTS: We present a case report of a patient with a broken dental needle fragment in the posterior oral cavity with subsequent migration to the cochlea over the course of 4 years, eventually leading to hearing loss. CT scan and middle ear exploration demonstrated a 4-cm metallic fragment abutting the base of the cochlea, immediately adjacent to the internal carotid artery.
INTERVENTIONS: The needle segment was removed through an endaur

BACKGROUND: Colorectal injury from an intrauterine device (IUD) is rare but may lead to major complications.
CASE: A 55-year-old woman presented to a tertiary care hospital with 4 days of generalized weakness, confusion, dysuria, and lower back pain. She provided a vague history of an unsuccessful attempt to remove an IUD 30 years prior. A computed tomography scan demonstrated an IUD in the rectal lumen, with gluteal and pelvic gas and fluid collections. Emergency surgery found necrotizing fasciitis. Despite multiple debridements, sigmoidoscopic IUD removal, and long-term intravenous antibiot

Foreign bodies in the upper urinary tract are relatively rare. Publications on this topic primarily consist of clinical case reports describing the removal of foreign bodies discovered after surgical interventions. However, in modern combat trauma care, the relevance of this issue has increased. In cases of penetrating abdominal or lumbar injuries involving the kidney, the penetrating projectile may remain in the renal parenchyma and subsequently migrate or initially lodge in the pelvicalyceal system. In the vast majority of cases, patients present with multiple (18.6%) or combined (71.2%) inj

Foreign body ingestion is not uncommon in clinical practice, and it may occasionally lead to penetration injuries. Emergency physicians and radiologists sometimes fail to obtain complete histories including ingestion and may overlook the possibility of foreign body-induced complications. Herein, we report a case of stomach antrum perforation due to foreign body migration. We were unaware of the patient's history of eating the Korean delicacy "Kanjang-gaejang," which is raw crab seasoned with soy sauce. Several imaging diagnostic modalities had suggested the possibility of a malignant mass in t

Foreign bodies can find their way into and around the bladder usually via urethra by self insertion, migration from surrounding structures and by penetrating trauma. The clinical presentation being varied, symptoms nonspecific and history often concealed makes diagnosis quite difficult. Fish bone ingestion has been reported to caused bowl perforation and rarely migrate to other surrounding structures. We present a case of 39 year old male who presented to us with LUTS and lower abdominal mass. Evaluation revealed a mass extending from the dome of urinary bladder to umbilicus. Imaging modalitie

A 1.6 kg, six-week-old Tibetan Terrier was admitted with a 12-hours history of acute onset of progressive tetraparesis following insertion of a microchip to the dorsal cervical region. Neurological examination indicated a lesion to the Ce(1) to Ce(5) spinal cord segments. Radiographic examination confirmed the intra-spinal location of a microchip foreign body at the level of the second cervical vertebra. Microchip removal was achieved following dorsal hemi-laminectomy; significant intra-operative haemorrhage was encountered. The puppy was ambulatory at day seven. Follow-up telephone interview

The author describes two cases of bronchial foreign bodies that were not inhaled. One of them was found in the right lower bronchus after having penetrated through a wound in the chest wall. The other was lodged in the right main bronchus after penetration through a wound in the soft tissue of the neck. Both foreign bodies were successfully removed with the bronchoscope.
