The objective of this study was to evaluate any damage to the facial nerve after a retromandibular transparotid approach for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a subcondylar fracture. We studied 38 patients with 44 subcondylar fractures (3 bilateral and 38 unilateral) treated by ORIF through a retromandibular transparotid approach. All patients were followed up for 6 months. Postoperative function of the facial nerve was evaluated within 24h of operation, and at 1, 3, and 12 weeks, and 6 months. Variables including type of fracture, degree of mouth opening, postoperative occlusion,

BACKGROUND: Significant controversy surrounds optimal treatment of displaced 4-part proximal humeral fractures. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has recently been proposed as an alternative to hemiarthroplasty (HA) and open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF). Several authors have questioned the additional implant cost for RTSA. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes and cost of RTSA, HA, and ORIF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients who underwent RTSA for displaced 3- and 4-part proximal humeral fractures and then retrospectively developed age- and

BACKGROUND: Distal radial fractures affect an estimated 80,000 elderly Americans each year. Although the use of internal fixation for the treatment of distal radial fractures is becoming increasingly common, there have been no population-based studies to explore the dissemination of this technique. The aims of our study were to determine the current use of internal fixation for the treatment of distal radial fractures in the Medicare population and to examine regional variations and other factors that influence use of this treatment. We hypothesized that internal fixation of distal radial frac

Traumatic injuries affecting bones of the hand and forearm often require peripheral nerve blocks for analgesia and surgical intervention. The successful use of subclavian perivascular block as a sole anaesthetic for orthopaedic surgery has not been reported in our environment. We report the use of this technique for open reduction and internal fixation of a left midshaft humeral fracture. The trunk of the brachial plexus was localized by a Polystim II nerve stimulator. Complete sensorimotor block was achieved within 15 minutes and surgery lasted 55 minutes without complications. This technique

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficiency of secondary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) after failed internal fixation of femoral neck fracture and the primary THA for non-traumatic ONFH and to evaluate if the two groups have significant difference.
METHODS: From June 2004 to July 2007, 203 cases of ONFH were treated by THA. In group A, 83 patients (83 hips) with ONFH after failed internal fixation included 56 males (56 hips) and 27 females (27 hips) with an average age of 58.3 years (range 45-75 years). According to Ficat classification, there were 61 case

BackgroundWhile workers' compensation (WC) patients often experience worse orthopedic outcomes, complication patterns following distal radius fracture (DRF) open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) remain poorly defined. Prior DRF-specific studies include only small, regional cohorts. This study leverages Epic Cosmos to conduct the first nationwide analysis comparing complications between WC and non-WC populations.MethodsThis retrospective study queried the Epic Cosmos database for DRF ORIF procedures (2017-2024). WC patients (N = 4,101) were matched 1:5 with non-WC patients (N = 20,505) ba

This study aims to compare intra-articular findings and clinical outcomes between patients undergoing traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and those undergoing arthroscopically assisted ORIF (AAORIF) for ankle fractures. By evaluating postoperative pain, functional recovery, and complications we seek to determine the role of Arthroscopy in optimizing outcomes. A retrospective study was conducted reviewing 83 patients who underwent ankle fracture ORIF: 34 with arthroscopy and 49 without. We documented intra-articular pathologies and evaluated variables such as tourniquet time

Mandibular condyle fractures pose surgical challenges owing to their proximity to the facial nerve and the complex temporomandibular joint anatomy. Traditional approaches limit exposure and hinder effective fracture management. The preauricular transparotid approach is a potential alternative. We aimed to assess the feasibility of this approach and the postoperative complications. A retrospective analysis of 45 patients who underwent open reduction/internal fixation (OR/IF) for intracapsular condylar fractures using a preauricular transparotid approach was conducted. Patient demographics, surg

To explore the biomechanical effects of different internal fixation methods on femoral neck fractures under various postoperative conditions, mechanical analyses were conducted, including static and dynamic assessments. Ultimately, a mechanical stability evaluation system was established to determine the weights of each mechanical index and the evaluation scores for each sample. In static analysis, it was found that the mechanical stability of each model met the fixation requirements post-fracture. During the healing process, the maximum stress on the hollow nail slightly increased, and stress

Fracture of the hallucial sesamoids is a pathology that causes difficulty for surgeons and patients. Because of the low incidence and the fact that up to 64-90 % heal with non-operative management, there is a lack of clear guidance in the literature for the surgical treatment of sesamoid fracture in cases of failure of non-operative management. Here long term follow up of an alternative method of surgical treatment of sesamoid fracture recalcitrant to nonoperative management is presented. 32 individuals were treated with temporary surgical immobilisation of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint us

Few studies have reported complications in metal fixation systems, such as infection or device exposure. Here, we report our experience with exposed metal screws after the reduction of facial bone fracture. This will be a useful guide to using a metal fixation system in situations in which metal fixation systems should not be used.

PURPOSE: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is the most commonly used surgical technique for talar neck fracture, but there are high risks for complications and poor functional outcomes. In this study, we reported the closed reduction and percutaneous internal fixation (CRPIF) technique of the bilateral approach of the Achilles tendon for simple displaced talar neck fracture, in comparison with ORIF.
METHODS: Data of 15 patients in the CRPIF group and 22 in the ORIF group were included. The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, 12

CASE: We report on a 22-year-old patient with a comminuted femoral neck fracture because of a low-velocity gunshot wound. Treatment consisted of reduction and internal fixation with a fixed angled blade plate and immediate valgus osteotomy. He went on to uneventful healing and an excellent clinical result.
CONCLUSIONS: A comminuted gunshot femoral neck fracture in a young patient is a rare and potentially devastating injury. If stable, and there are no other associated emergent injuries, reduction, internal fixation, and immediate valgus osteotomy should be considered.
