Cognitive neuroscience using wearable magnetometer arrays: Non-invasive assessment of language function.

Recent work has demonstrated that Optically Pumped Magnetometers (OPMs) can be utilised to create a wearable Magnetoencephalography (MEG) system that is motion robust. In this study, we use this system to map eloquent cortex using a clinically validated language lateralisation paradigm (covert verb generation: 120 trials, ∼10 min total duration) in healthy adults (n = 3). We show that it is possible to lateralise and localise language function on a case by case basis using this system. Specifically, we show that at a sensor and source level we can reliably detect a lateralising beta band (15-3

Hemispheric mPFC asymmetry in decision making under ambiguity and risk: An fNIRS study.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a commonly used task for testing decision-making under ambiguity (the early stage) and risk (the late stage). However, differences between the temporal dynamic signals underlying these two types of decision-making as well as the hemispheric specificity of decision making during the IGT remain unknown. The present study sought to address this gap by focusing on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which plays an important role in decision-making across life domains. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with high spatial and temporal resolution an

Self-regulation of inter-hemispheric visual cortex balance through real-time fMRI neurofeedback training.

Recent advances in neurofeedback based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allow for learning to control spatially localized brain activity in the range of millimeters across the entire brain. Real-time fMRI neurofeedback studies have demonstrated the feasibility of self-regulating activation in specific areas that are involved in a variety of functions, such as perception, motor control, language, and emotional processing. In most of these previous studies, participants trained to control activity within one region of interest (ROI). In the present study, we extended the

Focal abnormalities in idiopathic generalized epilepsy: a critical review of the literature.

Conventionally, epilepsy is dichotomized into distinct "focal" and "generalized" categories. However, many studies have reported so-called focal features among patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) in the domains of semiology, electroencephalography, neuropsychology, neuropathology, and neuroimaging. We sought to review such features and clinical implications. A Web of Science database search was conducted to identify relevant publications. Our search yielded 145 papers describing focal features involving different domains in IGE, with 117 papers analyzed after excluding abstract

Longitudinal investigation of neuroimaging changes related to memory decline in multiple sclerosis: Testing a mechanistic model.

BACKGROUND: Memory decline is common in multiple sclerosis (MS), although pathophysiological mechanisms are not fully understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to investigate the relationship of changes in structural and functional neuroimaging markers to memory decline over 3-year follow-up. METHODS: Participants with MS underwent cognitive evaluation and structural, diffusion, and functional 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans at baseline and 3-year follow-up. Changes in neuroimaging metrics from baseline to follow-up were compared between memory stable and memory decline groups. Our …

Relationship altered between functional T1ρ and BOLD signals in bipolar disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Functional neuroimaging typically relies on the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast, which is sensitive to the influx of oxygenated blood following neuronal activity. A new method, functional T1 relaxation in the rotating frame (fT1ρ) is thought to reflect changes in local brain metabolism, likely pH, and may more directly measure neuronal activity. These two methods were applied to study activation of the visual cortex in participants with bipolar disorder as compared to controls. METHODS: Thirty-nine participants with bipolar disorder and 32 healthy controls underwent…

Biomarkers and neuroimaging markers in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Biomarkers from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood, and peripheral tissue hold promise for early PD detection. In addition, neuroimaging techniques, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and positron emission tomography (PET), allow for detailed visualization of neurodegeneration and associated structural and functional brain changes. This review summarizes recent advance

Non-Invasive Mapping of the Neuronal Networks of Language.

This review consists of three main sections. In the first, the Introduction, the main theories of the neuronal mediation of linguistic operations, derived mostly from studies of the effects of focal lesions on linguistic performance, are summarized. These models furnish the conceptual framework on which the design of subsequent functional neuroimaging investigations is based. In the second section, the methods of functional neuroimaging, especially those of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and of Magnetoencephalography (MEG), are detailed along with the specific activation tasks em…

MANIA-a pattern classification toolbox for neuroimaging data.

Conventional univariate statistics are common and widespread in neuroimaging research. However, functional and structural MRI data reveal a multivariate nature, since neighboring voxels are highly correlated and different localized brain regions activate interdependently. Multivariate pattern classification techniques are capable of overcoming shortcomings of univariate statistics. A rising interest in such approaches on neuroimaging data leads to an increasing demand of appropriate software and tools in this field. Here, we introduce and release MANIA-Machine learning Application for NeuroIma

Global cerebral blood flow increase reveals focal hypoperfusion in schizophrenia.

Recent functional neuroimaging strategies have evaluated cerebral blood flow (CBF) to determine specific sites of action of pharmacologic agents. Since many pharmacologic agents change global CBF, we investigated the effects of global CBF changes on regional perfusion with acetazolamide, which increases global CBF via non-neuronal mechanisms. We used the [15O]PET technique to measure CBF before and after we infused 8 schizophrenic patients and 10 healthy control subjects with acetazolamide. The rostral anterior cingulate cortex demonstrated a greater perfusion increase in the schizophrenic sub…
