Hydroxybenzoic Acids Are Significant Contributors to the Antioxidant Effect of Borututu Bark, Cochlospermum angolensis Welw. ex Oliv.

Borututu (Cochlospermum angolensis) is an African tree whose bark has recently emerged as a herbal dietary supplement with claims for antioxidant activity. In order to substantiate the claimed activity of borututu supplements, we performed an activity-guided fractionation of the total extract utilizing a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Subsequent flash and centrifugal chromatography resulted in the isolation of gallic acid (1) and protocatechuic acid (2) as the main antioxidant constituents. Two apocarotenoids and one flavonoid were also isolated from the ch…

Differential effects of exogenous VOCs on the growth and stress responses of Cunninghamia lanceolata seedlings under low phosphorus.

This study investigates how exogenous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) influence the root responses of Cunninghamia lanceolata under nutrient limitations. Specifically, we assessed the differential effects of syringic acid and 1-butene on root morphology, phosphorus acquisition, and stress resilience. Clonal Chinese fir seedlings were utilized to test the effects of treatment with these two exogenous VOCs under both phosphorus supply (1.0 mM KH2PO4) and no phosphorus supply (0 mM KH2PO4) treatments in a controlled pot experiment. Compared to syringic acid, 1-butene significantly enhanced root

Fractional extraction of compounds from grape seeds by supercritical fluid extraction and analysis for antimicrobial and agrochemical activities.

White grape seeds were subjected to sequential supercritical fluid extraction. By increasing the polarity of the supercritical fluid using methanol as a modifier of CO(2), it was possible to fractionate the extracted compounds. Two fractions were obtained; the first, which was obtained with pure CO(2), contained mainly fatty acids, aliphatic aldehydes, and sterols. The second fraction, obtained with methanol-modified CO(2), had phenolic compounds, mainly catechin, epicatechin, and gallic acid. The fractions were bioassayed. Antimicrobial activities were checked on human pathogens, and a high d…

Methyl Syringate: A Primary Driving Factor in Manuka Honeys Ability to Ameliorate Neutrophil Intracellular ROS Activity and NETosis.

BACKGROUND: Neutrophils use both the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and a specialized process called NETosis to defend the body from material deemed foreign. While these neutrophil behaviors are critical in preventing infection, a dysregulated response can lead to tissue damage and fibrosis at host-biomaterial interfaces. It was hypothesized that applying the flavonoids found in Manuka honey: chrysin, pinocembrin, and pinobanksin, and the phenolic compound methyl syringate to neutrophils exhibiting pro-inflammatory behavior will reduce ROS activity and prevent NETosis in primary h

Protective effect of methyl gallate on murine antigen-induced arthritis by inhibiting inflammatory process and bone erosion.

Methyl gallate (MG) is a plant-derived phenolic compound known to present remarkable anti-inflammatory effect in different experimental models, such as paw oedema, pleurisy, zymosan-induced arthritis and colitis. Herein we investigated the effect of MG in the mice model of antigen-induced arthritis (AIA), a model with complex inflammatory response, driven primally by immune process and that cause bone and cartilage erosion similarly found in rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis was induced by intra-articular injection of albumin methylated from bovine serum (mBSA) in C57BL/6 male mice previously im
