Study results of benzoyl peroxide 5%/clindamycin 1% topical gel, adapalene 0.1% gel, and use in combination for acne vulgaris.

Combination therapy is the standard of care in the management of acne vulgaris. It is essential to treat as many aspects of acne pathogenesis as possible. Due to increasing insensitivity of Propionibacterium acnes to antibiotics, the concomitant use of other topical agents that exhibit other modes of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity is integral to the successful treatment of acne. The combination of topical benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin gel has been shown to be more effective than either agent alone. The addition of a topical retinoid may further enhance therapeutic results. Thi

Efficacy and safety of once-daily metronidazole 1% gel compared with twice-daily azelaic acid 15% gel in the treatment of rosacea.

Rosacea is an inflammatory dermatologic disorder characterized by the presence of facial erythema, visible blood vessels, papules, and pustules. The National Rosacea Society has established a classification system that identifies 4 distinct rosacea subtypes based on clinical presentation: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous, and ocular. The goal of topical therapy for rosacea is to reduce inflammatory lesion counts; decrease intensity of erythema; and reduce symptoms such as stinging, burning, and pruritus. Metronidazole and azelaic acid are thought to reduce the inflammation a

Comparison of a poloxamer-based thermally sensitive gel and an HPMC-based standard gel used to increase sildenafil citrate retention in the uterus.

OBJECTIVE: Sildenafil citrate (SC) could promote uterine lining development, leading to successful embryo implantation. Due to the low oral bioavailability of the first-pass elimination of SC, it is necessary to develop a gel for vaginal administration to improve the efficacy. METHODS: A vaginal gel was prepared using the cold method to increase the retention of SC in the uterus, which allows for prolonged contact between SC and the vaginal mucosa. A poloxamer-based thermosensitive in situ gel containing SC (SC-Tsgel) and an HPMC-based standard gel containing SC (SC-Cogel) were prepared. The

Natural bone inspired core-shell triple-layered gel/PCL/gel 3D printed scaffolds for bone tissue engineering.

Despite technological advancements in bone tissue engineering, it is still a challenge to fabricate a scaffold with high bioactivity as well as high mechanical strength that can promote osteogenesis as well as bear load. Here we developed a 3D printed gel-polymer multi-layered hybrid scaffold. The innermost layer is porous gel-based framework made of gelatin/carboxymethyl-chitin/nano-hydroxyapatite and is cryogenically 3D printed. Further, the second and middle layer of micro-engineered polycaprolactone (PCL) is infused in the gel with controlled penetration and tuneable coating thickness. The

Transfer of SDS-proteins from gel electrophoretic zones into mass spectrometry, using electroelution of the band into buffer without sectioning of the gel.

Five SDS-proteins, ranging in molecular weight from 14 to 66 kDa, were detected without covalent fluorescent labeling by the automated gel electrophoresis apparatus with intermittent fluorescence scanning (HPGE apparatus, LabIntelligence) during electrophoresis in barbiturate buffer in the presence of Cascade Blue. The SDS-proteins were electroeluted from the gel into 220 microl of buffer by a modification of the procedure of Gombocz and Cortez. The electroeluate was freed of SDS, ultrafiltered and subjected to MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The masses of the five native proteins were found to b

Advances in in-situ Gels for Ophthalmic Drug Delivery: Formulation Aspects, Mechanisms of Drug Release, and Therapeutic Application.

In situ gels have become a promising approach for ophthalmic drug delivery because they overcome the major limitations of conventional eye drops, such as rapid drainage of the drug, poor bioavailability, and poor patient compliance. These formulations are liquid before administration and undergo sol-gel transition in response to ocular stimuli such as temperature, pH, or tear ions, thus extending the time of precorneal residence and allowing controlled release. This review summarizes the existing progress in the design and use of ophthalmic in-situ gels, with a special focus on their mechanist…

A novel mild acetylation strategy for preparing high-resolution agarose gels targeting small-molecular-weight nucleic acid separation.

Small-molecular-weight nucleic acids (SMNs, 20-200 bp), such as microRNAs and short PCR amplicons, are crucial in molecular biology and diagnostics. Traditional agarose gels poorly resolve these fragments because of their large pore sizes, whereas high-resolution agarose (HRA) technologies are limited by harsh conditions, high costs, or narrow separation ranges. Here, a novel HRA was developed by acetylating three agaroses (Ag-1200, Ag-1500, and Ag-1800) with acetic anhydride, yielding optimal degrees of substitution (DS) of 0.32, 0.34, and 0.39, respectively. FTIR confirmed successful acetyla…

Metal-phenolic network coordination-mediated assembly of whey protein isolate gels: Structural evolution, functional attributes, and digestive behavior.

Traditional whey protein isolate (WPI) gels lack stability and controlled release during digestion. Compared to single-crosslinked carrier systems, modifying WPI with dynamic metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) offers a superior strategy with highly tunable cross-linking to overcome these limitations. This study aimed to develop MPN-WPI gels for targeted glycyrrhizic acid delivery. We tested nine clear treatments. These combined three phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid (CA), gallic acid (GA), rosmarinic acid (RA)) with three metal ions (Cu2+, Fe3+, Zn2+). Spectroscopy results confirmed the presence o…

pH-responsive emulsion gels based on low acyl gellan gum stabilized by yeast protein for enhanced astaxanthin protection.

Astaxanthin (AXT), a powerful natural antioxidant, suffers from limited oral bioavailability owing to its chemical lability and weak water solubility. Microbial-derived biopolymers have received increasing attention for sustainable emulsification in food delivery systems. In this work, highly bioactive AXT was extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis using soybean oil as a green solvent. pH-responsive emulsion gels were fabricated using heat-treated yeast proteins (HYPs) as Pickering stabilizers and low-acyl gellan gum (LAG) as an in situ gelling agent to enhance AXT stabilization. The composite…

Extracellular matrix-inspired single-network gels with tunable tissue-like toughness and viscoelasticity for high-fidelity organ phantoms.

Surgical training phantoms are widely used for high-fidelity clinical training, human-machine interaction, and robotic manipulation. However, existing silicone- and hydrogel-based phantoms are limited by excessive elastic response, mechanical fragility, and rapid dehydration, resulting in inaccurate tactile feedback during clinical procedures. Here, we introduce PHANTOM (3D photolithographic, anti-drying, tough, and mechano-tunable) gels, an ECM-inspired single-network glycerogel platform that reproduces tissue-like softness, viscoelasticity, and toughness while maintaining long-term ambient s…

Pickering emulsion gels stabilized by protein and polysaccharide-based particles: A review of stability, synthesis, applications and prospective.

With a far longer stability than traditional emulsions, Pickering emulsion gels (PKEGs)-stabilized by solid particles-have proven highly efficient in a range of applications during recent years. Particles based on proteins or polysaccharides with distinctive amphiphilic structure are particularly well-suited for the production of PKEGs because of their natural occurrence, low cost, high nutritional content, and potential health advantages. Thus far, it has been shown that plant and animal proteins, as well as their complexes with polysaccharides, effectively stabilize PKEGs. The three main mec…

Gelation Performance of HPAM-Cr3+ Gels for Reservoir Profile Control: The Impact of Propagation Distance and Optimization Design.

HPAM-Cr3+ (partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide-chromium ion) gels are widely used in enhancing oil recovery (EOR) due to their advantages of low cost, controllability, and high strength. The propagation distance of gels within the reservoir significantly negatively impacts their gelation performance. However, the extent of this influence remains unclear, hindering precise optimization for field applications. This study first established a gelation performance characterization method based on visual inspection, rheological parameters, and long-term stability, accurately classifying gels into fi…
